For everyone thinking that Downton Abbey would be the only place to find densely packed British ensemble casts on TV this year, you’re in luck. The BBC One has unveiled the first trailer for the drama The Casual Vacancy, based on the first adult novel from Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling.
Following news last Spring that HBO and BBC were teaming up to bring J.K. Rowling's The Casual Vacancy story to the small screen with a miniseries adaptation comes some exciting casting news for the project, which includes word that Albus Dumbledore himself -- Michael Gambon -- will be among the cast. Also among the stars of the miniseries are Rory Kinnear, Monica Dolan, Julia McKenzie and Keeley Forsyth.
HBO and the BBC have teamed up with Rowling to turn her 2012 novel into a three-hour miniseries to be aired at an undisclosed date. There’s a joke to be made about a vacancy on HBO’s schedule being casually taken by this miniseries, but it’s not up to Rowling’s standards.
The Casual Vacancy is unrelated to the Potter universe and targeted at adults, rather than children and young adults. The greatly anticipated novel received mixed reviews, but given Rowling's success and popularity, not to mention the success and popularity of her fantasy series, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that her new novel will be adapted. Only, instead of a feature film, The Casual Vacancy will be made into a TV series.
