ABC Greenlights Five New Shows Including New Rob Thomas Series

ABC Greenlights Five New Shows Including New Rob Thomas Series It looks like ABC is set to add a handful of new series to their midseason primetime line-up. The network has just greenlit three dramas and two comedies, including a series that will star Nathan “Captain Hammer” Fillion as well as Rob Thomas’ latest TV project (Veronica Mars fans rejoice!).

According to the Hollywood Reporter, ABC has picked up a police ensemble dramady called The Unusuals. This new series will co-star Amber Tamblyn (Joan of Arcadia, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants).

ABC has also given the official greenlight to Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas to get started “reinventing” his 1998 romantic comedy Cupid. I guess it would be too much to wish ABC would’ve given Veronica Mars the Scrubs treatment by adopting the cancelled series (and taking better care of it than The CW did). As for Cupid 2.0 (or whatever they decide to call it), hey – new Rob Thomas project! I won’t complain. Maybe if we’re lucky Thomas will find a role for some of the cast from Veronica Mars (Jason Dohring, Percy Daggs III, Francis Capra… I’m really not picky!).

The third drama series picked up by the network is Castle, which stars Nathan Fillion and centers on a mystery/horror novelist who helps the NYPD solve crimes. Maybe ABC will treat Fillion’s latest gig a bit better than Fox did (RIP Firefly and Drive)

As for the comedies, both are of the single-camera variety. Better off Ted will star Jay Harrington, who plays a good guy just trying to get by in an amoral word. The other half-hour comedy is Single With Parents by Kristin Newman (How I Met Your Mother and That 70’s Show). The descriptions for the comedies were pretty vague to say the least but the dramas sound promising.

The Reporter says there’s still no word on Captain Cook’s Extraordinary Atlas, Bad Mother’s Handbook (Alicia SIlverstone’s new potential-series) or Damon Wayan’s Never Better.
