Ok, while plenty of people are flocking to the theaters to see the sixth book of the Harry Potter saga play out on the big screen, there are plenty of us out there who will remain adamant that the films simply can’t hold a candle to the books. Now that can be said about most books that are adapted to film, but I think that the “not as good as the book” rule applies a great deal to the Harry Potter films and a large part of that is due to Rowling’s brilliant storytelling. As this is a big week for the boy who lived, ABC is airing a special on J.K. Rowling.
Airing on Thursday, July 16, 8:00 p.m., ET on ABC, J.K Rowling: A Year In The Life looks at the author’s life in the year that led up to the final book release. While Rowling may have a knack for telling stories, her own life story is fairly interesting and from the sound of it, this special is less about the wizard and more about the woman behind the series.
Below is ABC’s description of the special:
The woman who created an imaginary world for millions, J.K. Rowling, allowed cameras extraordinary access during the year before the seventh and final Harry Potter book was published. From the one bedroom apartment in Scotland where it all began to a hotel room where viewers watch her type the last words of the Potter saga, Rowling lets millions of fans into her world. The documentary exposes her childhood sorrows, visits the church where she and her sister worked after school as janitors, and allows people to see her now as both the queen of a magical, alternate universe and an everyday mom. Cameras also travel back to her hometown and discover where many of the characters of Harry Potter originated. Upon the release of the latest Harry Potter movie, Elizabeth Vargas takes viewers on a journey into the life of the woman who came from "nothing" and created all of her own success.
I’m a hardcore Potter-fanatic when it comes to the books and completely in awe of what Rowling has accomplished. While this special sounds a lot like other specials that have aired about the author, it should still be interesting to see more of the inside-scoop on the woman who created (in my humble opinion) one of the best series of books in literary history.
