While everyone’s busy fawning over movies, the American Film Institute took a minute out to recognize the year’s best work in television. They announced their 2006 Official Selections this past weekend, and you know what… they’re dead on.

Leaving increasingly dumb America to drool over ‘American Idol’, the AFI recognized true greatness in television awarding great, unheralded shows like ‘Dexter’, ‘The Office’, and ‘Battlestar Galactica’. Shows that have been and will almost certainly continue to be ignored by the emmies, get their due from the American Film Institute. Ironic. Their full list of selections is below. They don’t pick specific winners or break things down by categories. This is just what AFI thinks is the yeat’s ten best television shows, in alphabetical order:

AFI TV PROGRAMS OF THE YEAR-OFFICIAL SELECTIONS (in alphabetical order)
BATTLESTAR GALACTICA
DEXTER
ELIZABETH I
FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS
HEROES
THE OFFICE
SOUTH PARK
24
THE WEST WING
THE WIRE

In addition to listing the year’s best in television, the AFI also selects what they think to be the year’s ten best movies. For that, visit our movie news section here.
