American Idol: America Sends Sanjaya Home

American Idol: America Sends Sanjaya Home It was country music week on ‘American Idol’ and Martina McBride was on hand to give the final seven contestants some advice and support. If I were a betting woman, based on last night’s performance, added to her previous performances, I’d put money down on Jordin Sparks to win this thing with Melinda Doolittle as a very close second. As for everyone else, it was a weak week for the remaining idol-hopefuls. While six contestants will have at least one more week to prove themselves worthy, it was the end of the road for Sanjaya Malakar.

Malakar has had some support from a variety of sources ranging from genuine fans to the vote-for-the-worst people. Though his talent didn’t match most of the other singers in this season’s top twelve, I give him credit for holding his head high and having a good sense of humor towards the whole situation. He’s young and there’s still time for him to develop his vocal abilities and make something of himself as a musician someday.

LaKisha squeaked by this week by the skin of her teeth. In the last few rounds she’s failed to find a song that really compliments that big voice of hers. Blake slipped down into the bottom three this week proving that one imperfect performance is all it takes to lose the attention of the voters.

Who Should Have Gone Home Tonight?

  Results

Last night, Sanjaya Malakar gave the judges and Ryan “Something To Talk About” after a seriously sub-par performance of the Bonnie Raitt hit. Ryan, who seemed on edge last night, was far less jest-y than he normally is when exchanging words with Simon. The judges raved about Phil Stacey’s performance and had positive things to say about Chris Richardson and Blake Lewis as well but to be honest; I didn’t think any of them were all that great.

Jordin was on fire last night and Melinda wins the prize for finding the perfect song to compliment her voice. Both girls have proven themselves more than worthy of this competition. That said, how on earth did Blake end up in the bottom three? Sure last night wasn’t his best performance but it was a lot better than Chris Richardson’s.

In tonight’s results show, the final contestants got together to perform the usual group number. Normally I don’t really care much for this performance but tonight was a definite exception. They performed “I’m Alright” and amazingly enough, everyone sounded great! Each solo performance was on key and when they sang the chorus together, the harmony was perfect with no one singer dominating the song. My compliments to whoever arranged this number and of course, to the idols for performing it so well.

Here are my thoughts on the remaining contestants:

American IdolMelinda Doolittle
Brentwood, TN
The top three should be a lock for her at this point in the competition. She sang a country song and was rightfully compared to the great Tina Turner. Melinda has proven time and again that no matter what the genre, she can adapt. She’s a pop-star in the making.

American IdolLaKisha Jones
Fort Meade, MD
Unfortunately, LaKisha hasn’t had as easy a time at adapting to different genres as Melinda. I agreed with the judges in their criticisms of last night’s performance. She over-sang the song and it felt almost like she lost control of her voice at times. She’s got so much voice but she needs to have better control of it if she wants to avoid the bottom three next week.

American IdolBlake Lewis
Bothell, WA
I really didn’t care much for Blake’s performance last night. It wasn’t bad and he’s still definitely one of my favorites but he can definitely do better. Hopefully next week he’ll bring it back with a solid performance. Maybe something up-beat with a little beat-boxing since we haven’t heard much of that in the last few weeks.

American IdolChris Richardson
Chesapeake, VA
Chris is another one who is starting to stand out as a just-ok singer at this point. I found last night’s performance to be one of his worst yet. He seemed to have a hard time really connecting with the song he was singing. He’s a good-looking guy but I don’t think he has the talent or the charisma to really be amazing. Plus his shout out to Virginia Tech felt ill timed and inappropriate considering he did it right as Ryan was announcing his voting number. While his intentions were probably innocent, it just seemed like bad form to me.

American IdolJordin Sparks
Glendale, AZ
This girl gets better and better each week. It was an ambitious choice to go with McBride’s “Broken Wing” but she nailed it and might’ve even found the perfect B-side song for her first single. Great job, Jordin!

American IdolPhil Stacey
Jacksonville, FL
Phil’s performance this week was definitely an improvement from his previous performances but I wasn’t totally sold. He really needs to find that one amazing song to show the viewers/voters that he’s got what it takes to rival the better singers in this competition.

Did you think America made the right choice in allowing Sanjaya to go this week? Who would you have sent packing? Who do you think is most likely to win this year?
