Sci Fi announced today that Caprica, the highly anticipated prequel series to Battlestar Galactica will be making its official debut exclusively on DVD. I guess this means we won’t be seeing it air on the Sci Fi channel anytime soon. As I’m sure most of us diehard BSG fans were probably planning on purchasing the Caprica pilot on DVD eventually, I suppose it’s not that big a deal but it’s a little surprising that Sci Fi’s going about it this way. Why not air it on TV first and then release it on DVD a few days later as they did with Razor?
The Caprica pilot will be made available for purchase on DVD on April 21, 2009. As Battlestar Galactica wraps up its final season in March, I’m thinking that by end of April, most of us are going to be itching for anything BSG-related. The announcement said that the pilot on the DVD is a “limited-edition uncut and unrated version.” Unless I’m reading too much into that, perhaps the version that’s going to be included on the DVD will include footage that might not be TV-friendly as far as FCC regulations go.
Here’s a portion of the announcement:
“Caprica, the highly anticipated prequel to “Battlestar Galactica,” will enjoy its world premiere exclusively on DVD on April 21, 2009 from Universal Studios Home Entertainment. In a groundbreaking move sure to delight fans of the long-running television phenomenon, the feature-length prequel will be available on DVD as a limited-edition uncut and unrated version before the series’ broadcast premiere on the SCI FI Channel in 2010. Caprica is executive produced by Ronald D. Moore and David Eick (“Battlestar Galactica”) and Remi Aubuchon (“24”). Exclusive bonus features that take viewers behind the scenes of the creation of Caprica make this DVD a landmark event for any fan of “Battlestar Galactica.” The film will also be available at selected online destinations for digital download transactions.”
The actual Caprica series isn’t set to premiere on Sci Fi until 2010. At which point, I have to assume that Sci Fi will air the pilot prior to the series beginning unless they’re relying on everyone, including non-BSG fans to purchase, download or at the very least rent the pilot on DVD.
