Billy Joel Is Game For Giving More Of His Music To GleeAuthor: Katey Rich

At this point a musician would have to be an idiot, or just really, really pretentious, not to license their work to Glee. The show is so popular with the kids it probably has the power to single-handedly put your music back on the charts-- just think of how many tweens were listening to "Don't Stop Believin'" after it figured into the pilot episode. We heard that Kings of Leon turned down the mega-hit show, but you can count on them being an aberration, at least until Glee starts slipping in the ratings.
As it turns out Billy Joel didn't just license use of his song "Piano Man" to Glee last season because he recognized it as a cash cow. He had some nostalgic reasons of his own as well. He told Entertainment Weekly, "I said, ‘Yeah, go ahead, use my stuff. I was in a chorus when I was in high school, why not?” Joel told them he'd be happy for them to use more of his music in the future as well, but ruled out an appearance on the cameo-heavy show: "I’m just not a big TV actor type of guy. I’m a piano player." I can only imagine the kind of poppy messes they might be able to make out of Joel's classic songs-- "We Didn't Start The Fire" seems like an obvious candidate, but I'd love to see one of his epic piano ballads like "Captain Jack" somehow make it on the show. Do you guys have any particular suggestions? Or do you just want Neil Patrick Harris to come back and sing "Piano Man" on every episode from now on? |
