Boondocks Creator To Produce Web Series

Aaron McGruder, creator of The Boondocks, is looking beyond the printed page and Adult Swim to express his ideas and subversive slant on social issues. The Hollywood Reporter announced that McGruder will create a live-action series called The Super Rumble Mixshow for online TV hub SuperDeluxe.com. The series is set to debut in January.

This is a great idea. The Boondocks is one of the funniest and boldest animated series on Cartoon Network, and McGruder's take on racial issues, American politics and culture in general isn't just "edgy" or relevant — it's damn funny. Who else could produce a smart, hilarious and sincere script about a resurrected, Soul Plane-referencing Martin Luther King who eloquently critiques today's popular culture?

McGruder said he's looking forward to creating a topical comedy series that won't take animators months to produce.

"The Boondocks is something I'm very invested in, but there's a lot of other things that express my point of view that don't take 19-20 months," McGruder told THR. "This is just opening up a whole lot of creative opportunities."

The award-winning, and sometimes controversial, cartoonist and writer should have tons of creative opportunities with this new project. The series will debut with "mini-episodes" featuring sketch comedy and music some time next month. One proposed skit that should garner a lot of attention will feature actor John Witherspoon (Friday, the voice of "Grandpa" on Boondocks) answering viewer questions in a segment called "Negrology."
