It looks like CBS isn’t ready to let Moonlight go. The network has decided that rather than canceling the suffering new series, which centers on a vampire private investigator on his quest to do some good in the world, they’re going to order four more scripts and see if the series can build a bigger audience.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Moonlight is currently CBS’s lowest rated series. Even squeezing it between Ghost Whisperer and Numb3rs on Friday nights at 9:00 PM doesn’t seem to be helping the ratings.
The Moonlight story focuses on Mick St. John (Alex O’Loughlin), a vampire who works as a private detective. Mick was vamped decades ago by his bride, Coraline (Shannyn Sossamon). She’s been in the show briefly in flashbacks and is presumed to be dead but since Sossamon is included as one of the four main cast members, there’s a good possibility that she’s alive (or technically, un-dead, since she’s a vampire) and will return at some point in the future if the show stays on the air.
Mick looks out for all sorts of helpless people but no one more so than reporter Beth Turner (Sophia Myles). Beth knows what Mick is but also realizes he’s a non-threatening Vampire who doesn’t kill to feed and has proven to be a reliable source of information and protection.
Finally, there’s Josef, played by Jason Dohring (Veronica Mars). Josef is another vampire who is also a friend of Mick’s. Unlike Mick, Josef embraces his nature and from what little we’ve seen so far, spends most of his time feeding off hot chicks and being rich. Dohring’s character is as underutilized as Coraline is. While Moonlight is a watchable series, it would probably be a lot more entertaining of there were more of Josef and Coraline (if she really is alive) being badasses and a little less of Mick’s broodiness.
Based on the premise, many would try to compare Moonlight to the Buffy spin-off, Angel but the lack of Whedon-Noxon magic is one of many things that is keeping Moonlight from elevating to the greatness that was Angel. Moonlight isn’t quite a mystery show, nor is it totally a super-hero show. It’s pretty much a mixture of both but there isn’t enough of either genre to give the story enough of a boost to make it a must-watch series. It doesn’t help that Moonlight airs against NBC’s Friday Night Lights. So hopefully those next four scripts will bring a big enough spark to the series to generate a bigger audience.

I'm very pleased and happy that CBS has at least partially recognized the merits of giving "Moonlight" the chance it deserves! From what I've been able to tell, it has a quickly growing, enthusiastic audience which will remain loyal and supportive, reminiscent of the fanbase surrounding Angel, Farscape, etc. Hopefully, "Moonlight" won't suffer from the same ill-advised premature cancellation and we all can look forward to a few seasons of this wonderful escapist adventure! It is well-written, well-crafted, atmospheric when appropriate, and has just enough humor to make it one of the best new series in a *long* time.
Moonlight is the best new show of the fall season! I am glad to hear CBS has ordered more scripts and keep hoping for a pickup of the full season. The show is doing well and is increasing its viewer base. Moonlight has mystery, suspense, drama, romance, fantasy, witty dialogue, solid characters and humor. It is the best new show I have watched in a long time and I am anxiously awaiting each new episode.
It is a refreshing change from the standard detective shows and the chemistry between the cast members is phenomenal! Gorgeous Alex O'Loughlin does an excellent job in the portrayal of Mick St. John and beautiful Sophia Myles is perfect for her role. I love the voice over narratives done by Mick; they really add to the overall feel of the series and helps the viewer to delve a little deeper into Mick St. John's life.
Bottom line is that I believe if the viewers start watching this show, then they will be hooked as well! Give it a chance; you will be glad that you did!
I love this show - first episode I was skeptical, but it's the type of show that 'sucks' you in. This past week was great. Love the chemistry between the two stars, and Alex O. is the most gorgeous man to hit television in many a ... moon.
This show is so different than anything else on television. I have loved it from episode 1...Alex O'Loughlin is perfect as Detective Mick St. John. He is handsome and charming, and always seems to be trying to stay under control. His voice-over narations are entertaining, and well written. I love the rest of the cast as well...Beth and Josef do a great job as Mick's fragile love interest and friend. CBS should have found another time slot for this show...Friday night is always a tough sell unless the audience is of an older nature. Younger audiences are out, and most likely TIVO this show, as do I. I hope CBS gives this show more than the Freshman shot...it really has much to offer.
I was flipping the stations and found this show. This is the only show I watch on network tv. Everything else is on the cable networks. I hope they give it chance. I love it!
I am ADDICTED to "Moonlight" and hope it's not cancelled too soon! I love it and look forward to it eagerly every Friday night! I'm also telling everyone I know who's into sci/fantasy about it. I think Alex O'Loughlin is the hottest thing to hit TV in a long time and has great chemistry with his co-star and the whole look and feel of the show is very unique. I haven't been this hooked on a new show since "LOST" started. And right now I'd take "Moonlight" over any other show!
I love this show! It absolutely sizzles! PLEASE don't cancel it....I also agree with all the other positive comments. I've talked to many of my friends and they love it too.
I haven't been this excited about a television show in a long time. The first time I saw the preveiws for this show I automaticaly put it on my TIVO to record it. Since then, not only have I become addicted to this show, but all of my friends have as well. I would truely be disapointed if CBS doesn't give Moonlight the chance that it deserves by letting it continue to show on Friday nights.
I LOVE this show, and talk it up to all my friends!
There is NOTHING else like it on TV right now, especially since Dresden Files (which was a great show with loyal fans but not given enough time to build a bigger audience) was canceled.
Mick is the most romantic guy on TV right now, with mystery and action thrown in for fun. Romance is a big genre in paperback fiction, and paranormal stories are a large subset of that genre, which tends to not get any respect but which actually pulls in HUGE numbers of faithful readers- and dollars$$$$$$$$$$
There's a lot of new shows out there - CBS needs to give Mick & friends more time to bring in an audience!
This is the best show and I love it!!! I am talking it up with some people and they are going to check it out!! I hope they don't take it off the air. The tv is already clouded with way too many reality shows and such. I love when tv can give an audience a little imagination, like Moonlight!! I will keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best. I will be terribly disapointed if they cancel this and will not be watching one of the show in the same time slot on another station!!! Friday Night Lights bites in a big way!! Don't we have enough reality and sports in our daily life already????
I WATCH MOONLIGHT EVERY WEEK I LOVE THE SHOW AND WILL KEEP ON WATCHING IT I WOULD BE VERY UPSET IF CBS DECIDES TO CANCEL MOONLIGHT ITS THE BEST SHOW ON TV MY HUSBAND AND I WATCH IT TOGETHER SO PLEASE KEEP IT ON I KNOW YOU WILL BE HAPPY YOU DO. THANKS
I am a big fan of Moonlight. I didn't see any of the "other" vampire shows that have been on thinking they were just for teens. This one is for us adult gals. Hope it stays on at least for a couple of seasons. I am hooked and I have told my friends about it. Please CBS, listen. Friday nights rule.
I love this show and all it's characters. High school football season is over with for friday nights, so maybe this series can build a bigger audience and stay around a lot longer. I have also become addicted and have not missed an episode.
I can't belive I mixed up Alex's name in my note. Eric was talking to me as I was writing! Alex O'loughlin is a great actor who keeps you coming back for more. We need more of the show.
Moonlight is a very hot new show which I hope will continue. I read all these related type books of love and eternity and Eric (Mick St James) and his cast are outstanding in bringing it all to life.
Think again if you are considering it a failure because it's not!
IF MOONLIGHT IS FRICKING CANCELLD I SHALL BE ANGEREDD
seriously tho
many people will be soooo disappointed. if ratings don't go up include more VAMPIRES and less detective crap cuz people love vampires, but there are WAYY too many crime mystery shows on that throwing a vampire in the mix doesnt do much...
THE MOONLIGHT SERIES ON CBS IS THE BEST SHOW ON FRIDAY NIGHTS! IT'S THE ONLY SHOW I LOOK FOWARD TO WATCHING EVERY WEEK!!! EVEN IF IT TAKES MOVING THEIR TIME SLOT AROUND SO IT ISN'T UP AGAINST THE OTHER COMPETITORS IT NEEDS TO BE DONE! THERE ARE GREAT ACTORS WITH GREAT TALENTS ON THIS SERIES! MY HUSBAND & I WILL BE DEVASTATED IF THE SHOW IS CANCELLED!!
do not cancel moonlight. this is the best show on tv. i count the days until friday and am so disappointed when a new episode is not being aired.
keep up the tension between beth and mick. cut down the transformation to vampire. keep mick sexy. he is more dangerous when he is the mortal version of a vampire rather than a campy transformation to a vampire.
and keep josef and coraline in the show.
all the characters are outstanding.
This show was under-advertised to the general public. I really hadn't heard much about it, and passing by it on the TV, I didn't notice it. but, a friend was watching it and I joined her. It amazed me. I don't generally care for this genre, but I really like it. there's room for depth and growth--yes, but I love the premise and realism that is somehow added to the vampiric mythology. I never got into Buffy or Angel--to fake, mystical, and frankly, too trashy for me. But I love Moonlight! Get people to try it. It's own merit will hold it up. Don't let CBS cancel this!
Moonlight is the best new show we've had in a long while compared to those silly comedies and reality shows. This show has meaning, life, passion, compassion, you name it! It is unique and script is well-written. The cast is great and Alex is a charming and good actor. Please do not cancel this show as it will be a grave mistake!!! Thank you.
I have been hooked on Moonlight from episode one. The chemistry between "Mick" and "Beth" is worth watching and it seems that story line will only get better and more involved if the show is allowed to continue. I personally would rather watch Moonlight instead of one of those boring "reality" shows like Big Brother or Survivor. I would rather watch the "Weather Channel" than either of those shows. Try switching Moonlight to another night or time slot. It is a show that should be given a fair chance to succeed. Thank you.
Loved Moonlight from the start! Chemistry betwee Mick & Beth is incredible! Never liked this genere until this show! New twist on an old plot! Better than reality shows and the same old drama's like FNL.
I came across this by chance on Living TV recently and had missed the first few episodes (shame), there are a couple left to air. I am glad that there will be more. I am hooked on this programme, and hope their will be a dvd available later. Buffy and Angel didn't interest me. The main driving force captivating the audience is the chemistry between the two main characters (so beautifully done), who happen to be extremely good looking. Cannot understand how he didn't become 007. Hope he's lucky next time around. I really hope they make loads more episodes. I remember the fate of Americal Gothic, fantastic series, badly let down. Let's hope Moonlight stays on TV for longer.
I will cry bad if Moonlight is taken off I love it best show on TV so far. Why do they always take off the best on tv take something stupid off like tke off How I met your Mother or big band series and survivor. Please dont take off MOONLIGHT EVER
I'm so sick of only seeing headlines about Moonlight when someone wants to talk about the possibility it being dumped by CBS. How about people talk about the fact that fans are donating blood to the Red Cross in order to promote/save the show so we get another season. In fact, CBS should be doing a little more advertising in general for the show, that might get more people watching. I never watched anything on CBS until Moonlight, and I never will again if CBS cancels it.
Moonlight is the greatest show, CBS would be stupid to dump it....I mean what would they fill their time slot up with, another stupid Celine Dion concert.....Please, Moonlight kicks major a$$!!!!!!
I have not missed a single episode of Moonlight. I can't describe it but this show is clever, sexy, and very addicting. My parents and I specifically sit down each night and watch it. Now I'm 17 and would do other things on Friday if I wanted to but I don't. I just want to sit down on my couch with popcorn and watch my new favorite show.
I was really bummed after Gilmore Girls ended but my world was happy again when I watched Moonlight. I have my mom to thank for that. She watched it and thought I would like it and recorded it for me and I literally can't get through the week without going back and rewatching the previous weeks episode at least once a day. CBS, please take the comments and cries of deperation seriously because the show can and will be a hit if you give it a chance.
omg...i love moonlight sooooooo much! if they cancle it i'll dye....but then again, these days all the good shows are cancled early...but anyway, i've quite enjoyed the show (depsite the whole mick being able to go out in the sunlight without dying immediatly)...its been an adventure following Joseph, Mick, and Beth. I love Moonlight!!!!!!!!
I am VERY VERY upset that moonlight has been cancelled. I feel like they did not give this show enough of a chance to make it. I will not be watching anything else on CBS ever again, unless it is moonlight. I love Mick St John!
I think that the show should not be canceled!
Mick St. John is very cute and I love the chem. between Beth and Mick!
Yes it could get very interesting to see more of Josef and Coraline because Josef can get very agressive and Coraline, Dont get me started! I think she is tow faced! She is a good and bad vamp! I think the show is based on Mick and Beth's relationship but then there is Coraline that has a lot to do with the past present and future! Coraline could come back at any time and ruin the whole Mick-Beth fling the show has going on!
OMG !! please do not cancel the show!! it is my fave show EVER and even though i have watched buffy and angel (and i have buffy on DVD) i think it is WAY better than either of them! moonlight is a great show and i am constantly watching it. PLEASE have it for another season!!
Please, please, please do not cancel this show!! i, as well as my whole family, even my mother-in-law, love this show to death!!! What can we do o keep it on??!!! Give it another season!!! We are tired of the reality crap!!
What really is the deal with Moonlight. I read it is being cancelled and then now they are giving it a few mroe episodes? Please DO NOT cancel Moonlight. My heart was beating so fast when I read they were cancelling the show. I love this show and I Follow up with it Every Friday night right after Ghost Whisperer. Give moonlight what they deserve. Cancel anything else, BUT MOONLIGHT. I love this show. How can it be the lowesting rating on CBS. Unbelievable. My family and friends gather every night the show airs and watches it before doing anything else or goind anywhere else. PLEASE AGAIN KEEP MOONLIGHT. I look forward to buying the DVD when it releases.
DO NOT CANCEL MOONLIGHT. Please I Beg of you.... I LOVE THIS SHOW. As i was reading, there is suspense to this show and not showing more of coraline makes the show even more interesting. Being able to bring them back every so often through out the show makes it like an "OMG" she's back what now. BETH AND MICK? CORALINE AND MICK? you know what i mean. JOSEF makes this show interesting as well knowing when he comes its like ,,"MMMMM" wonder what he can do? things like this is what makes MOONLIGHT the BEST SHOW EVEN ON CBS..please do not cancel please please please.... give them a few more seasons not just episodes... i swear if i had the money i would keep it on air for those fans who love it because it would be wrong to take that away from the audience. It is like everything now is JUST business and not to please the audience. Please keep it a while longer and eventually it will grow to CBS's unexpected...EVERYONE WATCH MOONLIGHT.... !!!!!!!!!!!!
Do not cancel it. The story is just in half, we really want to know how Mick and Beth will do in Season 2 as Talbot has got a stranger's call and name list of vampires in L.A.
p.s. I am from China
Moonlight was a great new adventurous romance. i havn't missed an episode. all my girlfriends are disappointed that this show may be cancelled. We all looked forward to new episodes on fridays. This is a hit show and it would be a huge disappointment if it were cancelled. CBS get it together this show is awsome!
I love love love watching Moonlight!!! It is the best vampire show I've ever seen on tv. I cant' believe CBS would even think of cancelling. I think instead of terminating Moonlight and putting some other lame show, CBS should invest in advertising for Moonlight. DON'T CANCEL!!!
