Captain Jack And Torchwood May Head To America
The BBC has already renewed Torchwood for a new season in the UK, and now it looks like FOX might want a piece of the action according to Reuters. Rather than simply import the original, though, they're looking to make their own US version of the series. But don't worry, original creator Russell T. Davies would spearhead this one, along with the original production team. In fact, Captain Jack himself, John Barrowman, may even star.
It would be a great opportunity for the popular series to gain even wider exposure, and perhaps a bigger budget, but at the same time this is a genre property and this is FOX. At least we can take comfort in knowing that since Joss Whedon won't be involved, so maybe the network will leave it alone.
It's unclear if the US Torchwood would replace the UK version, or if both would occur simultaneously. Some reports have said this may be an indication of the entire Doctor Who franchise getting a US reboot, but that appears to be incredibly unlikely. Not only would it be a terrible idea, but I think the original has a loyal enough US fan-base that it would be rejected as well.
The genius of Doctor Who is that it never needs a reboot. It's built into the design of the show that it can essentially go on forever, as soon as they change the number of times the Doctor can regenerate to infinite. But Torchwood is an organization that could -- and probably should -- have a global reach, as the US version would likely emphasize. Captain Jack could easily be a part of both, and the new series could remain fresh, while fitting in perfectly with the established Who canon.
