Christina Applegate hosted last night's episode of Saturday Night Live, marking her second go-round at the job. As she pointed out in her opening monologue, the last time she hosted the NBC sketch comedy series was back in 1993. She was part of the sketch that introduced Chris Farley's motivational speaker character Matt Foley to pop culture. While I'm not sure this time around featured any sketches that had that kind of memorable staying power, Applegate was great and there were a few winners in the bunch.
The "Californians" returned last night with a new installment, and I'll admit, I'm not a fan of this sketch (even when Kristen Wiig was in it). It feels like a joke I'm not in on and always seems to go on for longer than necessary. So, while some may appreciate that one among the highlights, the winning sketch of the night was the "Tech Talk" sketch, which had three "bloggers" from known tech websites complaining about the iPhone 5 and then being confronted by three Chinese laborers who put their complaints into perspective. That one was funny all the way through. The Give Us All Our Daughters Back trailer is also good for a laugh.
The episode began with a parody of the Vice Presidential Debate, which you'll find below. The rest of the sketches and musical guest Passion Pit's performances follow. Missing from the group was the mermaid sketch, which I'm guessing had to do with the music featured in it. Too bad, as that one was surprisingly funny.
