The Marlboro Man died of lung cancer, and Matthew McConaughey had that awkward bongo incident, but it seems that “city girls” really just want the love of a man in cowboy boots, jeans, and a flannel shirt (or no shirt at all). That’s the premise behind Girl Meets Cowboy, at least, a new reality show debuting on the WE network this Sunday, October 14 at 10 p.m.
The title pretty much says it all: four friends, all from one of the nation’s largest cities, travel to a ranch out in the boonies to meet the potential man of their dreams-- a good, old-fashioned cowboy. The women must bale hay, corral cattle and perform other farm-related tasks, all in the name of proving their worth to the gentleman in question. In the meantime, of course, there’s also romantic dates under the big sky, all of which will help the guy pick one woman. Those not chosen get a truly bizarre consolation prize-- a subscription to match.com.
My favorite part of all this, really, is the statistics they include alongside the show-- like how 80% of women wonder where all the good menin their city have gone, and how 52% would rather date Matthew McConaughey than George Clooney (if I remember correctly from college statistics, not to mention the 2000 presidential election, that number isn’t even statistically significant). Also, weirdly, they include the fact that 93% of women would not date their best friend’s ex-boyfriend. Even though the women competing for the love of a good farmhand know each other, I can’t figure out what that one has to do with the show’s premise.
A few more great statistics, selectively chosen:
77% considered a cowboy to be more exciting in bed than a businessman
62% thought sex in the woods is sexier than sex in an elevator
63% thought a man who gets his hands dirty for a living is sexier than a man who works in an office
I’m not up on my reality dating show history, but is this the first time that women who actually know each other are made to fight over the same guy? Otherwise this show pretty much seems same-old same-old, but isn’t that a little cruel? Some of them are even co-workers-- how will they go back to working together after this? We’ve been calling for the death knell of inane relaity dating shows for a while now, but if this doesn’t mark the end of the road, I’m worried about what’s next.

Of course women love cowboys--strong, protective and a little bit wild--what's not to love. There are even reader websites devoted to the western romance like www.lovewesternromances.com. The show is tapping into a lot of women's fantasy! Like they say--save a horse, ride a cowboy!
