Comic Con: The Cleveland Show Falls Flat And Promises Family Guy CrossoversAuthor: Ed Perkis

The Cleveland Show panel has started and the difference between it and Family Guy becomes readily apparent. The intros aren’t funny, the people aren’t funny, and while the Ballroom hasn’t emptied out, it’s less crowded and raucous.
The panel's start is pretty random, with the usual introductions, but not much is really that funny. Just a bunch of comments that aren’t too interesting or good. Most of the voice actors are here including Mike Henry, Seth McFarlane, Jamie Kennedy and a few others. In what is becoming a pretty standard panel situation, the men talk and the women sit there. For three panels, I think I’ve only heard Alex Borstein say anything, even though there have been at least two women on each panel. As the panel continues, they drone on somewhat randomly and then at 12:13 they show the second half of the pilot. It’s about eight of the worst minutes I’ve seen in Comic Con. Very unfunny. God, this is an unfunny show. The clip shows how Cleveland and his now 14 year old son come to live with his ex high school girlfriend. There is a Stewie type kid called Rollo, a redneck neighbor and the bear, Nothing really works. After the bad second half of the pilot clip, they toss out a four minute clip from episode 9. There is a nice joke about how Comic Con people never get laid and that’s about it. Cleveland is trying to get his kid laid and does a rap after talking to Federline Jones, his step daughter’s boyfriend. The Q&A didn’t result in anything new, other than that there will be some Family Guy and Cleveland crossovers. There was also something of a serious explanation of why Cleveland was chosen for his own show rather than Quagmeir (he’s more complex.) Bottom line, I just didn’t care much for this panel. Even Stargate last year, which I knew nothing about was funnier and more interesting than this one. I expect more from Seth MacFarlane. |
