Nigel Lythgoe returning to Amercan Idol could be just what the fizzling singing competition needs, but would it mean the end of the line for the current judges? Would that be such a bad thing?

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Fox is close to inking a deal with Nigel Lythgoe to return to his role as producer on the series. This could be the network’s attempt to boost the show following Simon Cowell’s departure as judge. Given that the series has already started to decline in popularity, Idol could already use some help, but Simon’s departure could sink the ship if Fox doesn’t come up with some way to keep their cash-cow chugging along.

Rumor has it that discussions are in the works between Lythgoe and Fox to replace not one but all of the current judges. This would include newcomer Ellen Degneres, though she has a multiyear deal with the network. The Reporter’s sources say if anyone survives the purge, it’d be Randy Jackson, who still has one year left on his contract. Kara DioGuardi, on the other hand, has a one-year-at-a-time deal, which has yet to be renewed. So it seems likely that if only one judge were to be cut loose, it would be her.

Lythgoe’s judges wishlist includes Elton John, Usher, and former Idol judge Paula Abdul. Justin Timberlake is also on the list. The Reporter mentions Lythgoe himself as being a potential judge and given his experience at the role on So You Think You Can Dance, it’s not out of the realm of possibility.

So, Idol fans, how would you feel if all of the judges were replaced on the series? Do you hate it? Or are you indifferent because you’re already tired of Idol and looking forward to Simon Cowell’s X Factor?
