Courteney Cox And Cougar Town Creator Bill Lawrence Share Better Title Ideas, Cast Talks Season 3 Spoilers

Guess what? Cougar Town isn’t a comedy about women who like to date younger men. I say this without a shred of sarcasm, and also admittedly without firsthand knowledge. Not having seen far beyond the series’ pilot, my own understanding of the premise of the series was based largely on vague memories of the one episode I watched, and the title. But I've taken a renewed interest in the series, in an effort to give it another shot as Season 3 gets going tonight.

Just the other day I shared my thoughts on Cougar Town and my willingness to give the series another shot based on Community character Abed’s love for the series, added to other praise I’d heard from fans of the series. Some of our own readers chimed in to attest that the show does get better as the first season progressed. At this point, I’m feeling more than a little enthusiastic to give the comedy another shot when it premieres on ABC tonight.

In the meantime, the subject of the series’ unfortunate and apparently ill-fitting title was addressed by series creator Bill Lawrence when he spoke to USA Today. According to Lawrence, the title for the series was set in an effort to help sell the show, but that’s not the show that was inevitably written. Lawrence went on to say...

And so now we're a show called Cougar Town that's not about older women chasing younger guys. It's really a show that's about adult friendship and how people while away the time, essentially drinking with their friends."

Star Courteney Cox and Lawrence tried to figure out some better names that might get people to watch the show. Among them: Family Jules (after Cox’s character’s name) or Wine Time. I’m sold on either. Even both. Either is better than Cougar Town in my book, but I consider the term “cougar” to be off-putting and kind of tired anyway.

It seems the title is a big issue for this series. It was also addressed in a video interview that TVLine posted today along with a pile of spoilery tidbits the TV site collected from the cast of the series.
