Eastbound & Down Season 3 Preview: Kenny Powers Is The Picture Of Success
It feels like a long time since we’ve had any updates on the return of Danny McBride and HBO’s Eastbound & Down. The last time we saw the former big league hurler he was about to make a triumphant return to the US of A after a successful stint in Mexican baseball as ‘La Flama Blanca.’ Although that nickname is likely to remain behind, Kenny Powers - and everyone's favorite #1 fan/hanger-on Stevie Janowski - is now back is the American minors with the Myrtle Beach Mermen.
That's right. It’s finally time for former and future star pitcher to once again play ball in the land where they call it their national pastime. The first tease just hyped probable shenanigans Kenny, Stevie and his new teammates will get up to in the South Carolina locale, especially during the famous Myrtle Beach spring break, however, as far as a preview goes, it was definitely heavy on the tease. Thankfully, HBO has just released a new look at the highly anticipated upcoming season.
Called the ‘Drum Spot’ - because of the rising beat which gives it a nice ‘Old South’ feel - the trailer is narrated by one of Kenny’s inspirational speeches, this time delivered to a group of “poor, poor children.” And while some of them are likely to turn into coke whores, others can rise out of the gutter and turn their lives around just like he did. While the speech unfolds, we get a glimpse at his fellow Mermen - including SNL’s Jason Sudeikis - as well as returning favorites like Stevie and April (with a baby). Sadly, we don’t get to see (much of) Mad TV’s Ike Barinholtz as the Russian pitcher Ivan because, after his awesome guest appearance on a second season episode of FX’s The League, that’s the story line that I’m most looking forward to this year. Oh well, it’s still a great spot that delivers enough beats to get everyone ready and raring to go. Go Mermen!
Eastbound & Down Season 3 premieres Sunday, February 19 on HBO. The show stars Danny McBride, Steve Little and Katy Mixon. It was created by Jody Hill, Ben Best and McBride.
