It’s official. Dollhouse is being cancelled. While it seems Fox will be airing what’s left of the second season, including a big finale, as promised by Joss Whedon, the network has opted not to pick the series up for another season.
The Hollywood Reporter posted the news, stating that the eleventh episode of the thirteen-episode order for season 2 is currently in production. Fox put the show on hiatus after a handful of episodes and is set to bring the series back to Friday nights with back-to-back episodes. That, added to the reports of poor ratings for the show’s first few episodes, should make this news seem somewhat expected, but I doubt many of us are any less disappointed.
Dollhouse creator Joss Whedon posted the following at Whedonesque.com:
I don't have a lot to say. I'm extremely proud of the people I've worked with: my star, my staff, my cast, my crew. I feel the show is getting better pretty much every week, and I think you'll agree in the coming months. I'm grateful that we got to put it on, and then come back and put it on again.
I'm off to pursue internet ventures/binge drinking. Possibly that relaxation thing I've read so much about. By the time the last episode airs, you'll know what my next project is. But for now there's a lot of work still to be done, and disappointment to bear.
Thank you all for your support, your patience, your excellent adverts. See you again. -j.
While I’ll admit, I didn’t think much of the first couple of episodes of season two, the last new episode that aired, “Belonging” was by far one of the best episodes of the series to date and evidence that the show still needs time to grow and that there are some truly great stories beginning to unfold. Unfortunately, that’s not going to happen (Thanks a lot, Fox!). Still, we have some new episodes to look forward to next month and whatever new projects Whedon comes up with to satiate our craving for quality entertainment. And there's also the Glee episode that Whedon is set to direct.
