Game Of Thrones Drops Its First Look At Arya's New Costume

HBO has released a ton of new footage for the upcoming season of Game of Thrones. One thing the network hasn’t released is the costume that Arya will be wearing once she makes her big trip across the sea to Braavos. Today, however, that has changed, as Entertainment Weekly has brought us our first glimpse at what Arya will look like once she lives nearer the sea. Check it out, below.

Thanks to a drawing that was released a few months ago, we knew Arya would be sporting those cute little buns on either side of her head, but what is most striking about the costume is that it takes her away from the mostly brown pallet the young actress has been wearing while she traipsed around the country pretending to be a boy. All of the early footage from Season 5 has still seen her in that ugly brown garb, but now it seems that she is favoring more colors that are lighter and a little more colorful, although there is a brown, netted sweater covering her shoulders. The EW photo was taken by Marc Hom as part of next week’s print issue of the magazine. She looks remarkably feminine, but there may be a good reason for that.

There are some spoilers from the Song of Ice and Fire books in the next paragraph, so now is a good time to jump ship if you are only watching the Game of Thrones TV series!

In the final episode of Season 4, we saw Arya use the special coin that Jaqen H’ghar gave Arya to book passage to Braavos, where H’ghar actually hails from. He’s one of the Faceless Men, a group of capable assassins who are able to shift into numerous appearances. If you’ve seen the previews for the new season, we already know that Arya will reach land again safely and if you’ve read the books, you’ll know that she eventually does begin to train with the Faceless Men and will eventually begin to go on her own missions for the group, just like Jaqen.

Obviously, the costume change makes sense, considering her changes in circumstance. In fact, in the novels, Arya is asked to get rid of all of her worldy possessions when joining the Faceless Men. In addition, it makes sense that the fashions of Braavos would be much different than the clothing worn in King’s Landing and the surrounding areas, just as the clothing worn in the North and in Dorne has been very different. Still, it’s a little surprising to see the young actress looking comfortable a skirt.

Arya is only one of several characters who will be changing locations during Season 5. We already know that Tyrion Lannister is also on a ship headed far away from home, with Varys at his side. And we know that Jaime Lannister will be heading to Dorne to check up on his niece---err daughter—Myrcella. You can find out more when HBO’s Game of Thrones returns to the schedule on April 12 at 9 p.m. ET. In the meantime, here’s what we know so far.
