Grey's Anatomy's Shonda Rhimes Talks Cast Renewals And Katherine Heigl's Desire to Return
With several key stars’ contracts coming up for renewal at the end of this season, Grey’s Anatomy has been in a bit of a limbo state, waiting to see who will return. But showrunner Shonda Rhimes doesn’t seem worried – in fact, she’s pretty confident that the big names on the show are coming back. But guess who isn’t?
In a chat with TV Guide Rhimes made it clear that in spite of some talk about the possibility, there won’t be an appearance by Izzie. Not long ago Katherine Heigl made it known that she had offered her services to return to the show to explore where Izzie might have gone. Not long after, sources at the show hinted that she’s not welcome back after her not-so-nice comments about the show. While Rhimes was quite polite about it, she pretty much but the nail in Izzie’s coffin:
I think it was really nice to hear her appreciating the show. We are on a track we have been planning, and the idea of changing that track is not something we are interested in right now
Translation in my opinion: Too little too late, Katherine. As for who will be back according to Rhimes, well, she is confident Patrick Dempsey (who has been negotiating his return) and Ellen Pompeo do want to return along with the rest of the main stars of the show. No promises yet of course, since no one has signed on the dotted line, but if anyone has a good idea of what will happen it would have to be Rhimes. She also stated that no matter who stays or goes, there is a plan in sight for the end of season eight. It sounds like fans can rest easy, Grey’s is going to be just fine.
