While fans of ‘Jericho’ and ‘Veronica Mars’ are demanding more episodes of their favorite series from the shows’ respective networks, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ fans are demanding better episodes and storylines from the writers of the show. While season 2 of the hit ABC series served to draw in millions of devoted fans, season 3 seems to have let many of those fans down. Ferry crashes, visits to the afterlife, infidelity, parents dying and so much more filled the season that appears to be getting more and more like a soap opera than a drama series.
Granted, when it comes to shows like ‘Grey’s,’ there is a fine line between soap opera and primetime drama series but the writers did prove in the first and second season that the show could find a good balance of drama and quality storytelling. This season it feels as though the writers have been dragging our favorite characters through so many different sub-plots and storylines that the heart of the series has gotten lost. Many of the fans (myself included) are beginning to lose faith in the writers’ abilities to deliver the same quality episodes that aired in season 2.
Once upon a time, when a show started sinking, fans had two options: jump ship or cringe as they watched the band play on as the ship went down. We’re in the age of the internet though and TV fans are eager to rise up in full force and make themselves heard when they’re unhappy.
We received an email, forwarded to us from a fan of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, which basically unloads what many fans of the series are feeling about the third season of ‘Grey’s’. I had not intended to post the letter in its entirety here because its very long but when trying to find excerpts from it, I found that there was nothing I felt could be left out. I’d credit the person who wrote it but I don’t have their name. I invite them to email me if they would like me to include their name in the article. (See update below)
The writer is inviting fans of the show who agree that the series has gone downhill to go to www.greyswriters.com and post a comment expressing their thoughts on this season as well as their hopes that they will bring the series back to greatness when it returns in the fall.
“To Whom It May Concern:
This is an open letter requesting assistance, an SOS if you will, to SAVE OUR SHOW - Grey's Anatomy. We have lost faith in the producers and writers of what once was a wildly entertaining program. Through what we can only interpret as their arrogance and ignorance, the writers and producers have lost sight of the essential ingredients that made up a creative, high class, well acted, extraordinary primetime television program.
Grey's Anatomy, as we have known and loved it, is dying. A major fan revolt is taking place. We are deeply concerned that the producers and writers may not heed this warning before it is too late. There is a real risk that Season four will see a dramatic loss of Grey's Anatomy's viewing audience.
For the most part, fans are not upset because they do not like the story line. Rather we are concerned that Grey's Anatomy has lost its heart and soul. It no longer reflects the quirky, inventive, refreshing brilliance of the first two seasons, but rather has become as dark and twisty as one of its major characters.
We have lost faith in the writers. In blogs and podcasts, they have asked fans to hang in there and make the leap to season four. They have made promises regarding story lines that have not been delivered, and because they have done this so often, now fans have lost faith that they can or will deliver on any new declarations.
The loss of faith in the writers also extends to the inconsistency and incongruous nature of many of the major characters. Over time we have gotten to know the characters well, but many are no longer recognizable. Having characters behave one way in one episode and then a completely different way in the next is not only frustrating, but also points to lazy writing. Viewers lose both loyalty to the character and respect for the writers. Fans will only tolerate such poor characterization for a short time before they simply turn off the program. Even loyal fans will not stay tuned when they see the characters they know and love turned into schizophrenic marionettes.
As loyal viewers, we also are concerned that rather than challenging us to think about social issues, the program is degrading the importance of many of the desired norms in our society. Marriage, fidelity and pregnancy are trivialized. Such a depiction of the institution of marriage and the responsibility of pregnancy does not reflect normal society or reality. Of further concern, Shonda Rhimes' comment in her most recent podcast that women "cannot have it all" is patronizing to ALL women and the antithesis of the current state of society.
Perhaps our greatest concern is the latest ABC Grey's Anatomy writer's blog, in which Ms. Rhimes states that she has burned the show and the story lines to the ground in order to start again from scratch. Ms. Rhimes is taking the easy way out. Either she is spread too thin or is no longer capable of writing the minute detail required for the continued growth that should be expected in all the core characters, specifically Meredith or Derek. Increasingly she has come to rely on the blogs and podcasts to explain what is happening between the characters because what we see on the screen often leaves viewers baffled. A cynic might even believe that she waits to see the reaction of the audience, then uses the blog and podcast to offer explanations designed to placate fans, as well as empty platitudes and promises asking us to trust her to make it right. Because she fails to deliver, fans are quickly losing faith in her and the show. We will not watch next season if she persists in this direction. In addition, our disappointment in this season is so great that we will not buy the season three DVD. The season can only be described as pathetic with momentary glimpses of the old show that we love.
We also believe that Ms. Rhimes' decision to burn the show to the ground may mean she has "backed herself in to a corner" with regard to the series' plot lines. On several occasions, she has introduced a new character, but by the time he or she has completed the task of advancing the story or filling in gaps from the past, she has fallen in love with the character or actor. This leads to needless and often destructive changes in the planned story line and/or other characters' basic traits or behavior. In doing so, she is treating her viewers as morons and has bastardized the characters we love. And regarding the season three finale, does the term "Deus ex machina" ring any bells?
Ms. Rhimes states in her blog, "I did my level best to burn it all down this season, to burn it to the ground so that we can have a place to build from next season." Perhaps we can also offer her a word of warning about "burning" Meredith and Derek's relationship with it. That relationship and the onscreen chemistry between Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey are what first attracted many viewers to this program. Burn them and you cook your goose - the one that lays your golden eggs. And if we are faced with another Meredith/Derek/McWhoever triangle next season, I think we all may have a little McVomit in our mouths. Boring! Been there, done that to death.
If you believe that this letter is the hysterical whimsy of a few disgruntled fans, we would like to refer you to the ABC Grey's Anatomy Writer's Blog comments at www.greyswriters.com/.
In essence, we are asking you to please exert whatever pressure possible on the producers and writers of Grey's Anatomy before they lose the viewers who have made it the number one show on primetime television. We want our uniquely quirky and refreshing television program back, please.”
Update (6/8/2007) - Thanks to an email from one of the people who contributed to the above letter, I now have the source. The above letter was a group-effort, written by some of the posters at ABC’s ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ message board - Specifically, the people who post in the “New Spoilers” thread. – Nice work, guys!
The fans have spoken. Your move, Shonda.
Do you agree that Grey's Anatomy has gone downhill?

I totally agree with your article and the fans letter. The reason I watch the show is because it is a true love story between Derek and Meredith. They need to make this relationship grow and develop and not destroy it. I hope the writers get the idea that everyone wants this and go with it. Bringing this Lexis Grey character for a love interest will definitely ruin the show for me. I would stop watching if they breakup true love with this ridiculous storyline.
First I agree totally with the letter. But what disturbs me even more is the inconsistency in storylines and characters. Especially in the last half of the 3rd season. I watch very few television programs, and have truly enjoyed this one until mid 3rd season. Both because it was an entertaining show on the surface, but had much symbolism and nuance to make it interesting to analyze. There could be many reasons why the quality of the show has deteriorated. Whatever they are, there is a problem when someone who has watched the show from day 1 (as I have), who has watched most of the episodes (not season 3) multiple times (as I have) doesn't understand what is happening on the screen. When I read the blogs and listen to podcasts and feel like I didn't wach the same show, there is a problem.
I too fell in love with the story being Meredith and Derek; they have tremendous chemistry. Greys has a phenomenal core cast. I would prefer to see the love story between them develop. There is so much potential material for a couple with high stress jobs working together, rather that the trite on again-off again typical television fare. But if Shonda's vision is to not have them together, I could deal with that if the storylines and character development lead up to it.
At this point, I'm trying to give Shonda the benefit of the doubt. I will watch in the beginning of the season. If they don't do a better job on writing, you will lose this viewer which is unfortunate because I have tried to get many people to watch this show. I will be telling them it is not worth their time.
I hope I am wrong, but at this point, I feel that reviving the old Grey's is next to impossible. As an example, Shonda has publically said that Kate Walsh was only to be on the show for 5 episodes, but they like her and extended her stay. In order to do that, the had to totally change the storyline around. (Don't get me wrong, I like Kate Walsh/Addison) But because Shonda liked her is not a reason to change the storyline. After you do that enough times, as a writer, you are left so far from your original vision that you don't know what to do. So you burn it down. You may not have much time to rebuild it if you don't have anyone who wants to watch.
Please do not destroy Meredith and Derek. Not just their love, but their life! Meredith has gone through so much that the only believable way she could survive the stress is to have a love supporting her and helping her through this. Without Derek Meredith should then go to a mental health institution because no one survives that much stress without serious effects, and she is a surgeon after all!
George's failure is real and I would like to see him work his way through this. But the Izzy/Callie thing is a time bomb. If it is worked out where Callie and George are given viable options and both struggle together through it, it will work whatever the outcome. But if Izzy gets George without waiting and going through her pain of not easily getting what she wants, the story is just another blond get guy cliche.
I loved that Burke finally realized he was pushing Christina to submit because of her love. I loved that Christina did. But I loved that they stopped the wedding because it would have been a flawed start. Now they can look at their relationship and see it for what it is and move on. A second attempt at a wedding after realizing that they love each other for who they are without trying cancel each other would be great. A true sign of their love is accepting each other and moving forward despite it.
Keep Lexie out of Meredith's way. It would be tragedy that the sister she never knew, who got the love she never got, would also get her man. Meredith is the heroine of the story -- don't destroy her. Besides, Lexie doesn't look like she belongs.
I am looking forward to Season 4, but am hoping it will be better than Season 3 in that it follows fewer story lines more deeply than to put many issues superficially. Please no more crossing over to the "other" side, no more near deaths of main characters, and most of all, can't we have a reflection of a couple that struggles and stays together instead of always breaking up and going through partners like a change of underwear? After all, even in today's society where there is so much divorce and nonn-marriage there DO exist couples that make it.
I have watched the show since it started. Tired of Meredith and Derek.
I agree that whatever Isiah Washington said stupid. However, I did not want to see him removed from the show. Oops! trade off for Imus? I will not watch Grey's Anatomy.
Thaks to whoever wrote that letter, ITA. Please, Kelly West, if you know anyone in ABC would you please FFW it to them? I hope they will listen, because what they did with this show, specially Meredith and Derek is just sad, I want my Greys back!!!
I love GA and I really love Meredith and Derek - their love, their chemistry, their passion, their desire, their longng for each other, and their everything............
I think Shonda has let fame go to her head. She has no interest in pleasing the fans any longer. Her only interest appears to be in filling her pockets. Grey's is the only show that I religiously watch and now I have no desire to tune in next season. Looks like 30 Rock and NBC will be getting my business.
In regards to the fan letter, I could not agree any more! This person definitely hit the nail in the head as far as common sentiments among Grey's fans. The show has lost its quality and charm of the first 2 seasons, and I am afraid of how Shonda will go about building after the fire, if you will.
The biggest inconsistency in my opinion is the Meredith and Derek relationship and Izzie. Yes, we know Meredith is dark and twisty but why does a grown woman use this as an excuse to not further a relationship. I thought the whole near death experience was supposed to help her but not in ShondaLand. I had such high hopes for them when Derek told Meredith he's loved her since the beginning in the s3 premiere and then again when she chose him over Finn. Apparently there's no such thing as a happy ending on Grey's as Shonda as poitned out. Do the writers not know that you don't have to break up a couple for some drama? It's like when they don't know what else to do they just start ruining relationships. Enough is enough. Come up with some creative ideas and ease back on the soap opera storylines.
And Izzie. How does she go from being completely torn up because of Denny to completely in love with George? I guess it only took one night of drunkeness to set off the lightbulb that she has more than friendly feelings toward George.
Shonda and company, please bring back the Grey's we once knew and loved. Bring back the obvious chemistry between Mer and Der. Bring back focused, driven, saracastic Cristina and please don't make her all dark and twisty after this whole wedding/Burke thing. Bring back the Izzie we tolerated. Bring back the magic that made seasons 1 and 2 a hit. I won't stop watching the show because I want to see how it rebounds in season 4, but a lot of fans won't wait that long before or after for a change.
While I have been slightly dissatisfied with some of the plotlines in Season 3, I think a letter is way over the top. This letter seems to suggest that the fans are going to rise up and rebel against the show. IT'S A TELEVISION SHOW PEOPLE! If you want to rise up and rebel against something, how about the government spending your tax dollars on a stupid war. If you want to write letters, write them to your congresspeople. If you don't like Grey's Anatomy, turn off your TV and read a fucking book. If you want to write television shows, go get a degree in media studies and get a job at ABC, otherwise, stop watching shows you don't like and spend your time on something important that actually effects the real world that we live in.
I completely agree with the letter. I knew I did not like how the 3rd season was heading for a while and that letter said everything. I was mainly devistated by the fact that Meredith and Derek were off again. Where is the girl who was begging Derek to pick her!!! When Derek was desiding between Addison and Meredith. I feel like Meredith is going backwards emotionaly not forward. I don't feel like they are letting her grow. Can't Meredith be happy at some point in here life? Oh and the love triangle to me is so predictable. You know whats going to happen. Cali suddenly wants a baby, so Izzi is going to end up be "Knocked up" from her and George's one night stand. All I can do is hope and wait to see if the next season is worth watching at all. I'm all ready pissed that one of my favorite Charaters (Burke) has been fired. That means that my second favorite couple on the show will never reconcile. So season 4 already has a gloomy outlook in my eyes.
I completely agree with this article and the letter. Grey's is not the same it used to be. Admittedly the first part of the season (save for the first couple episodes) was amazing and classic Grey's - the interns were constantly challenging and doubting themselves. But the latter half was a complete mess and it started with the ferry boat ride. The absolute ridiculousness of the the arc - the writers should not have dragged it on for three episodes. Did anybody ever doubt that Meredith was not going to survive? What would have been the episode completely shocking was if she died. Not to mention, it was unbelievable that Meredith was "dead" for so long and did not suffer any brain damage. It was unrealistic. I know Grey's is known for its drama and not its medical accuracy, but at least most of the cases had some kind of explanation (pregnant guy anyone?)
My final complaint about the ferry arc was the reason WHY Meredith survived. She should not have to chose to live because of Derek - she should chose to live because she WANTS to; because she has things worth living. It was as cringe worthy as the whole "pick me, chose me, love me" speech. Okay, Derek is all hot or whatever (personally, I never understand the appeal of him, but that's just me), but no guy should define her life!
And Izzie. I absolutely adore her and Alex together - they complimented each other perfectly...what happened to that storyline? If it weren't for JDM, I would have hated the whole Denny storyline (mainly because several storylines were dropped for no reason), but still, it completely made sense for Izzie's character! She always got too close with patients and the Denny arc showed that and how each interns challenged and doubted themselves. But the place where the writers took Izzie in the second half of season three was a complete 180. There was absolutely no build-up for George and Izzie except for that one drunken night. I loved their friendship and I don't understand why there could not just be two friends who stayed completely platonic. Even though I do not care much for Callie, I cringed and sympathized with her when Izzie and George hooked up.
There are too much relationship this season and so many plot lines that the writers did not elaborate on and just completely forgot about. Get back to the healthy medium of half relationships and half medical. Also, bring back the laughs! Sure, season two was depressing in some aspects, but the next episodes made up for it by being light. I think I spend more time depressed for the second half of this season than I did for season one and two combined.
I was pretty disapointed with Season 3. There were certain episodes I loved and others I couldn't stand. The ferry episodes were cute in a weird twisted way, but then got boring. I feel like Seasons 1 & 2 were incredible. They were happy, sad, exciting and all at the same time. The audience got a good story with a happy ending and tragedy all in one episode. There were highs and lows. Season 3 was just a low.
As a soap opera fan I know my soaps pretty well. There are good ones and bad ones and Season 3 as a soap opera was a very poor one indeed.
I'm still a Grey's Fan, but with poor reviews and hostile fans I can't see it going anywhere, but where The OC another beloved show went and that my friends is the graveyard. The OC too started as a wonderful drama with the same things we loved about Grey's. After too much grief and the killing off of characters it tanked. Let's look at the direction Grey's Anatomy is heading and let's try not to be too surprised when it fails.
Let's look now to shows that ended onn high notes. Sex & The City, The King of Queens? And while these shows are very different they do have things in common. Sex & The City was brilliant. There were tears and sadness at times, but laughs at life and love. The characters kept trecking through the rocky terrain in their lives, and that is just what Grey's needs. The characters of Grey's Anatomy need to get through the tough times with some laughter and find joy on the other side.
I love Grey's. The quotes, the medicine, the true, realistic people and everything they go through, but the audience can only take so much. The characters can only be so sad for so long. Please writers give us back The Grey's we love! :-)
We want Mer/Der back! We want healthy relationships every once in a while and we want Cristina to find love. Why? Because Cristina gives every person hope that they'll find love. We need hope. Everyone needs hope. And we need hope that Grey's will return.
Awesome letter! I agree with everything that the writer stated. I love the characters Meredith and Derek. Ellen and Patrick have wonderful chemistry, and bring a lot to their characters. And I want to see real storylines for all. I feel Ms. Rhimes jumped the gun by producing "Private Practice," and pretty much abandoned Grey's during Season 3. I sincerely hope she and the writers listen to the fans and bring back the winning recipe that made the show in the first place.
As for the previous comment by Nicki, "it's a television show people," it's more than that. That "show" brings advertisers and product companies the money. And they are the ones who generally side with the fans, who buy their products. Not not the writers. Fan power rules!!!
It will be interesting to see how good (or rather poor) the Season 3 DVDs will sell come September. Not really worth buying.
DR. BURK.... the chief is a good person, but burk bought passion and showed that a black man could be smart the best and yes! still stay passionate! i hope they don't replace him with a black man, we don't need another black man on the show, just to have one, we need BR.BURK! WOULD A NEW "MCDREAMY" BE OK! ?
Totally agree! We have watched since Season One. We find ourselves watching Season One when we are quiet and no Grey's. Why? Because it was unbelievable writing. The characters felt like they were real, the writing, acting and cast are phenomenal! We know its just a frinkin' show, but we tune in each Thursday to enjoy what Shonda and her writers have created. I find my youngest relaxing in bed and saying, I just need to be cheered up. So she puts Season One on, she is only 12. She too, felt the characters warmth, charm and love.
Izzy, George, Meredith and Cristina, their friendship is so true feeling. George the Glue, you find yourself just laughing at each epi and remembering its just a frinkin' show, but damm, we love how it gives us warm fuzzies.
Our Bailey too. She rocks, She is their angel! Each character gives so much to this show, but we liked it better before middle of Season 3. When it all went dark and twisty.. Too sad..
We can't forget the chase, Mer/Der. Wow.. so fuzzie and warm. So fun to watch and yes, in true life once the chase is over, you might think viewers won' be interested, but each day is a chase, a new challenge, and deeper love. That is what we all want, not this dark/twisty crap that has led your viewers so sad.
We, like everyone else, can't understand how someone could drown, come back to life, fight for the love of her life, and then.. walk away.. Come on.. that is so unreal.
We all ask, how can this all happen in just one year, and you expect Mer to be sane? Come on McDreamy.. you are a brain surgeon, you love her, she is the love of your life,
and now you needed space and then her step mom dies, dad slaps her, belittles her and you tell her you cant breathe for her, and then she walks away. Come on, McDreamy she totally needs you. Real life Shonda..
it can be interesting..
Enough of it. Bring it all back to what everyone wants.
Yes, their can be happy endings and lots of inbetween stuff, but not all this soapy dark/twisty.
We are devoted and will stick around for Season 4, because we do believe Shonda will keep to her words,
seriously, she has too. Let the fun begin, let the chase begin and let our interns have the time of their lives!
Keep Breathing.. Mer/Der.. We are pulling for you. We want the friends laughing in the kitchen, in the bathroom, we want Mer/Der to finally get their happy ending, because a happy ending can entail everyday struggles, but yet each day you grow more with love. Come on..
Shonda..
Sad to see Burke go.. He made a big mistake, making amends, but I guess the hurt is still there and we understand. We will miss him.
Keep breathing, well.. we will try and seriously, Shonda..
listen to all of us. You have an amazing show, but get back and make it fun again.
First and foremost, I would like to commend Ms. Shimes in creating an interesting TV show where every period we get into the complexity of human beings and believe me although we like the fairytale stories, life is a roller coster just like the one shows in Grey's. Yes, everything is not perfect and I believe that Shonda and her collaboartors we look into that. However, I have faith that whatever crisis or cossroad the show is they (all the crew) will be able to surpass it into to give a new direction to it. I also think that Mr. Washington is a great actor and I find unfortunate his departure from the show but nothing happened for no reason. It will bring new blood and I hope a chance (yes, the opportunity for another actor and to camp a role in this phenomenal series). In the era where everything (idea) is being criticized and or attacked easily by people hungry for what isd lacking in their own life it becomes challenging to please everyone.
Let's trust the creator and her team, let's hope that the transformation will be beneficial for everyone. Long life to Grey's...Many years to come like ER. Please having another Black man will actually showcase their talents and be a model for promising young Black male actors. I disagree with one blogger saying not to have another Black man. This is demonstrating prejudices like the presence of them could ruin the show. It will actually enrich it as Black men are the backbones. Yes, the backbones of this country.
I totally agree with the above article. Firstly,my major dissappointment and concern is the Lexie character which is an insult to any merder fan and the show. To make matters worse, Shonda on her podcast was proudly boasting the fact that lexie flirt with derek! is that suppose to be a JOKE? i dont think so! Secondly, the Gizzie storyline is totally lame and annoying, however the damage has already been done, which is too bad. Thirdly, i guess u under estimate the power of fans, i am not a huge fan of IW but i like his character, why fire a major character like that? Also do you have to kill Ellis grey and Susan? you would have gone to so many places with their storyline, what is it with you and killing people anyway? The spin-off is another issue, majority of your fans objected to that spin-off, but you still went ahead with it, It seems to me you listen to no one but yourself. Shonda... "THERE ARE SOME LINES THAT ARE TOO DANGEROUS TO CROSS!" dont take the success the show has for granteed because you will be shocked and suprised. Lastly, i dont see how you can possibly rekindle any fans interest if u dare let der and lexie happen. I HOPE YOU READ ALL OUR COMMENTS FOR YOUR FANS SAKE.
This season just was not good writing. Too many death and near death situations.
The direction the writers took the Meredith/Derek and the Burke/Christina relationships was extremely disappointing. Why can't real relationships be allowed to thrive and grow? Why must their be so much SOAP antics? Then there is that unbelievable situation with George/Callie and Izzie of all people. I just don't like what I saw through the last half of the season.
Now to find out that one of the major actors I tune in to see on Grey's is getting the boot. Ms. Washington is a superb actor. He brought so much to the show. Sure he may have spoken out of turn...but who hasn't. He apologized and did all he could to make his mistake into a more positive situation. His departure is going to leave such a big void. A recasting of the character is not an option. The can only be one Dr. Burke.
Shonda please bring back the Grey's of season one and two. That is when the series was smoking. I want to feel as I did watching those shows...excited and on the edge of my seat waiting to see what was going to happen next. I am counting on Season 4 being the best ever.
I agree with the letter completely. I think many fans are also disappointed with Season 3.
I didn't see the episode where George and Izzie slept with each other (my sister erased it!). For the rest of the season, I could not understand why the George and Izzie relationship was still going on. I could not understand how all of a sudden, these 2 people were madly in love with each other after a drunken 1-night stand. It seemed ridiculous to me.
I like Callie because she is a real person, not the same 5'10" blonde girl. It's time that TV recognizes people who are a size 14+, rather than a size 2!
My greatest disappointment is the firing of Isaiah Washington. I think this is a big mistake in two ways. First, Isaiah Washington is an excellent actor and a main character on the show who really defines a large part of the show. Mr. Washington shows everyone how a black man can succeed, be at the top of his field, love, and have passion as a surgeon and passion as a man. I think society has a negative view of many black men and Isaiah Washington showed us how a black man is. I certainly do NOT want this to be a racial comment. It is not intended to be that at all. It is a compliment to Isaiah Washington that he defined this character as well as he did.
Mr. Washington made a mistake, a large mistake. However, why can't someone ever be forgiven for a mistake? Mr. Washington apologized and went further to better learn about gays and lesbians and why he said his comment. Is he to be condemned and be fired from Grey's? Is he to be condemned the rest of his career? The relationship between Burke and Christina Yang was the best I've seen on television. It was tense and intense, passionate, raw, emotional, and more. What a waste to change the show so drastically!
I wish Shonda and the others involved would look at our disappointments and take them seriously. I don't want to see Grey's Anatomy go away, but they have to make it better.
i want my greys back!!!!!!!!!!! season 1 and 2 were the best ever. what happened? i want my merder back happy and real . like a real couple with real issues. i want more about the best friends we all fall in love with (chris, mer, izzy, alex, george).the first cast was the best ever. i hate lexy and i hope she keeps her hand off derek. burke was there from the start and it is sad to see him go. i love him and christina together. it is sad. i want my show back.
I agree, the show feels like it has gone over the top and lost sight of its identity. What makes Grey's a uniquely entertaining show for me is the bond of friendship between the core interns: Mer, Cristina, George, Izzie and Alex. They started the show and we should continue to focus on them. Don't get lost on the special effects, exaggerations and spin offs. Keep these characters real, not schizophrenic. Have them address real issues. As the open letter states, the writers have thrown everything but the kitchen sink at these characters, making them jump over hoops to catch ratings. Well, they've got their shock factor, but are losing the fans.. me included.
As for Dr. Burke, I love what he does for Cristina and hate the thought of him disappearing overnight after what they've gone through. He's a critical role in the show. Send Lexie home and bring Preston back!!
What's more patronizing than Shonda Rhimes' statement that "women can't have it all" is your take on the sanctity of marriage, pregnancy, etc. Your naivete in this situation is disgusting. Abortions happen; adultery happens. What's next? Shonda is not allowed to depict gay characters because it speaks against the "institution of marriage"? Come on now...
The 1st and 2nd season created somethign so great that I knew it could not be continued in the same manner. The music has gone down hill as has the very felling of the show. It used to be serious but FUNNY and light hearted - we don't see that any more. Where is the Merdith that was portrayed in episode 1 has the girl who was "a spitting image of her mother" and I don't mean "looks". She was smart, funny, and like a little girl. Now she is depressed ALL THE TIME - Nothing can ever go right in this show. They find a way to "screw" everything up and make it "oh so dramatic". It is getting old - you can tell what's going to happen before it happens.
This pains me because I thought the first season (9 episodes) of GA were the greatest TV I've EVER seen. I try to get everyone I know addicted to it, and it usually works. Season 2 was very good and left you wanting more, BUT...... Seanson 3 did not deliver - (READ ABOVE) and you'll know why.
The show needs toget back to it's roots - better music - and a serious BUT FUNNY and light hearted series about the friendship of "our characters".
Please listen to so many fane and fix what was ONCE GREAT!!!
PS: If you get rid of George - I'll never watch again - It was a mistake to get rid of BURKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love Grey's Anatomy but my main purpose for watching the show is Mer/Der I love them as soulmates and need them to be together. Heck evn PD and EP want them together. So shonda listen to our voices.
I agree with the letter, but have a much simpler complaint. Happiness. There wasn't any this season on GA. Like many of you who have posted here an other GA sites, I have watched from the very first epi. I have followed along devotedly and enjoyed the ride until season 3.
As a married woman with children and a full time job I understand women "can't have it all", but that doesn't mean they aren't happy! It doesn't mean they are "burnt to the ground" constantly! It certainly doesn't mean they have to choose an "all or nothing" approach to marraige, children or career.
I was deeply depressed with the season finale of GA. Honestly, I will watch the first few epi's of season four before I abandon the show, but there better be something positive happening or I will no longer watch. If I want consistently depressing television I would watch a news channel. . .
I completly agree with the letter! Mer/Der cannot and should not be messed with. Myself and many other people obviously watch Grey's for one thing and one thing only...to see Ellen and Patrick's chemistry burn up the screen!!
The only reason I can think as to why the writers would mess with the one thing that is right with the show is that they have become too confident or too arrogant to listen to their fans. SAD SAD SAD
I agree that Grey's is not the show it once was. The storylines no longer brought you into caring about the characters. Meredith has always been a twisted soul, but for Derek to flirt and then blame Meredith after her stepmom dies and she is slapped, literally and figuratively, by the father she was just beginning to let into her life was so un-Derek. That was so far from McDreamy. His compassion and caring for her was suddenly gone - it made no sense. The show needs to get back to its core characters and the personalities they exhibited in the beginning. There is no reason for Meredith and Derek to still be together. A good story doesn't always involve breaking up for them, the more times they break up the less I care if they get back together. The Izzie and George story is sloppy writting. The story was unnecessary. Let them grow up and develop their own lives. Children act better than the characters on Grey's. I found that if I was not home on Thursday nights, I didn't care about missing Grey's. Then I found myself watching CSI again and realizing I missed the writting and characters from CSI. I got to the point of watching Grey's if a rerun was on for CSI. The show was great but not this past season. I realize that writting a show cann't be easy, but at least the core characteristics could stay the same.
•Grey's Anatomy (ABC, 9 ET/PT) returns with a new episode that finds Derek and Meredith once again reassessing their relationship. I'm willing to go where the show leads, and if that means bad relationship news, that would hardly be an unexpected direction. Series often feel the need to keep their main couples unsteady to maintain the sexual tension. But still, wouldn't it be nice if Grey's bucked that tired trend? The Bob Newhart Show worked quite well with a happily married, very romantic couple at its center. Couldn't Grey's at least give it a try?
I definitely agree with this! I was not happy at all with season three and was very disappointed because this is the only show that i actually make time to watch. The whole Meredith and McDreamy deal was good at first, but if they try it again it is just going to be way too much. They need to leave them to rest and go about something else for next season. Their relationship during this season changed so much from one episode to the next that it seemed so completely untrue. Derek does not act like his kind caring soul almost the entire half of season three , and then to try and bring in Meredith's sister, Lexi, to break them apart next season! Not cool!!!
They completely changed the charisma of so many of the characters last season that I can't even imagine what is going to happen next season with them. Burke would never just give up and take off like that. He is too focused and in love with his job, and himself, to walk out on that hospitol. These characters started out so headstrong and focused, and they would not let these petty nonsense things get to them. But now they are all...broken.
Another thing is, even though I do think the new series with Addison in LA might actually be pretty good, I will not at all be happy if Addison leaves Grey's Anatomy! She did a great job of making her way through the show and turning to the good side, that she needs to stay. She needs to stay on the show and get McSteamy!! Alex is taken! ;o)
Well, I am very interested, and intensely waiting to see what is going to happen next season. To see if my favorite show will survive or if it will be ruined! Honestly, something needs to change next season or this show is going to end, and there will be so many devastated hearts out there.
There are so many inconsistencies, it is really hard to care anymore.
For me, the most obvious one is the fact that they are bringing in this new character, Lexie, who is supposed to be Meredith's sister. However, somehow this sister (one that must have been born at least 6 years after Meredith) is only a year younger, and decides to take her surgical internship at the same program as Meredith. Apparently this girl began kindergarten while still in her mother's womb.
This is impossible. Do the writers realize that?
Also, before Susan died that ridiculous death, she was trying to get close to Meredith. You would think she would have mentioned the fact that her daughter was coming to the same program as Meredith. It is what any mother would have done in any logical setting. Of course, sloppy writing does not allow for logical progressions. If they bring in some wild, band-aid solution to this obvious inconsistency... a pathetic one such as "Meredith's father had an affair with Susan all along, thus having Lexie the year after Meredith was born... contradicting everything else that has been written about all characters involved)... I swear I will never again watch this show.
Then there is the fact that Lexie meets Derek on the night of her mother's funeral. She shows up at a bar (WHY the bar across from the hospital remains unexplained. It would make sense if it was the bar across from the funeral home or the cemetery, not the hospital... What she drove there after the funeral just for kicks??? Apparently, a daughter who just UNEXPECTEDLY AND SHOCKINGLY loses her mother to the hiccups just goes to a bar, perfectly groomed and without any trace of having cried ever in her life, and tries to pick up men with a warm smile in her face... What are these characters not human anymore? What happened to the rich, complex characters we used to enjoy..., like Bailey? Are we now introducing the "bad, heartless girl"... like in some cheap Mexican soap opera? So we are supposed to believe this girl is fine on the night of her mother's funeral, and that she calls her mother's death "having a bad day"? I find it offensive to the intelligence of the viewers of this show.
I think the writers have lost all respect for us. They really do believe we just swallow anything and everything. No matter how stupid or unbelievable.
It is a real shame. Someone should tell them about cable, other channels, other networks, NetFlick... lots of other options we have at our disposal. Do they honestly believe people will stick around for this crap?
I completely agree with the letter. I am a loyal fan, watched every episode (even season 3), I make sure nothing conflicts with Grey's night, but...... I did not enjoy season 3. I really do like all the cast, but the reason I watch the show is Meredith and Derrick. I, like other viewers ,love the chemistry and passion between the two of them. I know real life has disappointment, but sometimes it has forever as well. Season 1 and 2 and some of 3 was all about true love and them working things out, just to burn it all down. Even though it may be narrow minded of me - if they are over - I am over the show.
I have been a loyal Grey's Anatomy fan since the premiere and I love how you guys keep us on the edge of our seat but I do have some complaints.
What in the world is wrong with Ellen Pompeo's character Meredith! I love her and all but she needs to be smacked. I cried with this girl all throughout when we were in pursuit of longing for our McDreamy now she has him and don't know what to do with him! It's like she loved what she couldn't have! How could she walk away from Derek repeatedly when she begged him to choose her over Addison!?
When Meredith was in acoma, Denny showed her how her life impacted all of them including McDreamy.(Oh, we're not suppose to remember that right?) So why would she just break up with him in code like that at the alter of all places! She is making me sick right now.
Christina's life and happiness has nothing to do with hers! Christina and Burke's marriage would give her hope for happiness to be possible for her own life? Why have you made her character so weak? And why do you keep letting people smack her and grip her up without her defending herself. I wanted to jump through my tv screen at Callie!
What happened to my McCouple that I fell in love with!? You people are killing the Grey's Anatomy we all fell in love with! LOL! What is wrong with Christina!? Burke is the best she can get. He is the bomb and madly in love with her! Those wedding vows were the most romantic I have ever heard! The writer who came up with that deserves a raise. Bravo! Good Job!
Please Shonda! Isaiah should not be fired! He is Preston Burke darnnit! Sorry, but the man is phenomenal at his job! I don't care who doesn't like him! Isaiah is a very hardworking and hard-earning individual that deserves this job, do not deprive him of this opportunity over a few words that he has apologized for! He did everything ABC has asked of him! Why are black people punished so unjustly!? Let's be serious, if this was another castmate, like McSteamy, NOTHING I mean NOTHING would be done! It wouldn't have even leaked to the press! If this isn't about race what is it about? One word that has been spurted out in anger, we all say things we don't mean! The punishment does not fit the crime! I do feel Isaiah is being targeted by the media and he is being punished for it and his talented performance for Burke's character is not even being evaluated! His work thus far is going unnoticed!!!
Furthermore, Why doesn't Isaiah have a McName!?!? How is it that McSteamy came on after him and got a McName? Is this a racial issue? Well it can't be because Shonda you are black and you gave them their names right? I don't understand this either, and if I was Isaiah I would have a problem with it too! He could be McCharming or McLoyal, McFaithful, McWonderful, McHandsome, McFoxy, McClassy, or McSomething! I'm sorry but I am on both sides. T.R. is right for feeling put on the spot regarding his lifestyle, and he got the apology publicly so let's move forward. George and Burke were becoming best friends!
Patrick said they are family and families fight! Isaiah apologized, and let's move on with the show. He is Preston Burke! Nobody can fill those shoes! He is the most believable actor/doctor on primetime! Shonda please bring him back, don't let him go!
I heard T.R. Knight didn't renew his contract and he is leaving too! Please let that be a lie. George is a very good actor. I love him and Izzy, don't do this to the George/Izzy fans! I love them! My favorite George line is when he was pretending to be Christina for Meredith and she pretended to be Izzy. He said,"McDreamy did the McNasty with McHotty, that McBastard!" I died laughing. So funny and creative. This is the most creative show since Alley McBeal.
I can't stand Callie, but it's only because she is with George she should be with McSteamy. And because of the crap she put him through. But she's beautiful with the black hair and eyes.
Why did you mess everyone's characters up writers? Poor Alex, all confused and fighting his feelings for Addison/Rebecca/Ava.
The characters are all getting on my nerves, except for Miranda and the Chief. I'm happy for him and his wife Adele and I think Miranda should have been number one choice for Chief but I was sooo happy McDreamy gave the position back to Chief Richard Webber. I love this handsome man, and his loyalty to his wife. The writers did something right bringing them back together.
Alright Season 4 better be better than ever. Not sure what the girl at the end with the last name Grey is all about but it better not involve my McDreamy! Another triangle for this McCouple and I am done!
Lastly please give Chandra "Miranda (The Nazi)" Wilson more spotlight! I love her and I am proud of her strong independent not trying to get in everyone's business attitude but I would like for her to open up more so we can know about her life. And congrats to her for winning the SAG Award, she deserves it because she is the best!
You guys are taking entirely too much from us fans that it is so up in the air regarding tuning in all throughout sesaon 4! First we lost Denny, then Mere's mom, and her step mom (What the heck did she do to deserve that?) I feel her dying was extremely unnecessary! Now we're losing Burke AND George!?!?!? What are you guys doing over there? I disagree as well with your opinion that women can't have it all regarding a career, love and a family. That is your opinion and you are entitled to that but please stop incorporating this through our beloved characters! This is tv, they CAN have it all, dang give us some hope! Let us skip the reality of our bad day and live a better one through them. Look, one of us have to be happy!
I can't believe they got rid of Burke. He was probably the best character on the show, with Christina of course. The show has definitely gone down hill, but I will try to watch next season. I don't know how far into the season I can go if things don't improve. I really loved seasons 1 and 2 of Grey's. But, season 3 just wasn't up to par. I really hope the writers and producers make some changes.
I've been a fan from the beginning, It's a show that both myself and spouse watch together. Please bring Grey's back look at the votes...it tells the story wake up and get back on track.....Please...
I was THE #1 GA fan S1 &2. The S2 finaleleft me breathless! Episodes 1 & 2 of S3 were brilliant. They started to loose me at the end of E3 when Mer cut her date w/Der short. E4 was fantastic until Der told Mer to be w/Finn, "the better man". What an insult to the viewers. Most of us watch GA for Mer/Der, and this entire seaon after E4, there were maybe 4 brief moments of happiness for them. Heck, even their happy bath tub scene turned dark. All season, Der and Mer walked around like depressed zombies. Shadows of themselves. George and Izzie had personality transplants, and Mark was way under used. Please save our show!
I totally agree..the show used to be fun to watch. seasons 1 and 2 I watched the re-runs..I have the DVDs..season 3..I stopped watching during the first runs..recorded and then watched on fast forward to see if Derek and Meredith had any fun scenes together. no such luck ..I will probably record the season opener to see if something good happens but I am not hopeful and I dread how they plan to use this ridiculous half-sister character who is just one year behind Meredith?? the show has really pushed creditability to the limit. If there is no more relationship for Meredith and Derek then I will vote with my remote and tune back into CSI which is what I have been wtaching all summer...
We all fell in love with the characters that you built. That is why we watch the show. To see these people that we have grown to love like our own. Someone posted a comment about it and I agree 100%. Why would we watch a show that has been burned to the ground to get a fresh start. I can easily find a new show with brand new characters to watch, rather than sit and remember how it used to be. I too am a huge fan of Der and Mer could they have one full episode of happiness, rather than a few moments. They are both so depressing now that I want to slit my wrists if they don't. Let them be happy and smile.
Firing I.W. was a mistake. We really don't care what happend backstage, we would be watching reality television if it did. Sometimes people don't get along with co-workers, that's life people, suck it up and do your job.
I totally agree with the letter also. This season was not good. Season 1 and 2 was great, I have those on DVD. I erased all of season 3 from my DVR.
Why can not Mer/Der be happy, they can still be very interesting. They have chemistry. They have been through there trials. Let them be happy.
Izzy and George I do not even want to go there. She was so in love with Denny. Then overnight she was in love with George?
How come storylines can not be finished. Such as Izzy's daughter, after the one episode we are supposed to forget all the storylines that came in the episode prior to it.
Why have Alex fall in love with a patient, we already went through that with Izzy, that matched her personality, it does not match Alex's.
But two of my main complaints are with MER/DER and Chris/Burke. Mer and Der are the show, people watch because of them. Do not break them up. Christina and Burke were a couple who understood each other. No matter what problems they had they would comprimise until the end. Then to have Burke just leave when he is so dedicated to the hospital and Christina.
Burke needs to come back. Who hasnt said something that they wished they had not. He said he was sorry. I think if he was going to be let go they should have done it right then and not waited until the end of the season. It is like waiting to disipline a child 5 months after the event happened. Bring him back.
I am a loyal watcher of Greys. Regardless of what everyone says, I will be back. I am so obsessed with the show - its sad - especially for someone as old as I am. It's almost embarassing. However, there were two reasons that I watched the show. The first were the story lines. some were quirky, some were shocking. When a show can leave me speechless at the end and I can't move off my couch to go to bed - that is good writing. I didn't have any of that this season. The second was the relationship between Derek and Meredith. I'm a romantic at heart. I love the boy meets girl gets girl theory. There is so much chemistry between Derek and Meredith that I can't stand it. My heart races when they are together. If only I could meet someone like that and have him look at me the way Derek looks at Meredith. It's my fairy tale.
Each character on the show has his or her own story line. I hated that you had Izzy fall for George. There wasn't any chemistry there. There isn't any chemistry with George and Callie either. I kind of liked when George and the little nurse were together or maybe when you had Christine Ricci as a guest star in Season II. There was more chemistry between her and George the few minutes they were on screen then there is between George/Izzie/Calli.
We all watch TV or go to the movies because we want to be entertained. Because we want to escape from the everyday pressures we are faced with these days.
Bring back my fairy tale and the laughs, tears, and shocks of Season I and II.
ehhhh i don't really agree with the letter...probably because i really liked the season 3....not as much as season one and two but still liked it. i was definately left wanting more by the end of season 3 which is really the writers' job. leave them wanting more.
it doesnt have to be bright and shiny to be good. and we all know meredith and derek arent over...they may break up for a little while but theyre not over. them two? one hospital? over? nada. and i personally wouldnt mind another love triangle between them. but thats just me...
i realize know no one on the show was really happy by the end of season 3 finale but no one was really left happy at the end of season two. yea, meredith and derek had sex. hot, dirty, cheating, adulterous sex. i'm not saying i didnt like it. because i did...it was hot...really hot. but also wrong and they knew that. i'm just saying.... quite honestly i have no doubt in my mind that meredith and derek will end up together and stay together by the end of the series finale. theyre like ross and rachel.
and i will definately be buying the season three dvd the day it comes out. =]
I do not agree with the letter. I am a faithful watcher and fan of Greys Anatomy. I got hook on the first episode and watched ever since and I own both DVD's and I definitley plan on buying the third Season also. Yes there were some story lines that were a little out there but first of all it is entertainment. To make someone want to watch is to have Character do crazy things or act irrational. That is part of life. You cant tell me that there is someone out there that hasnt at least once just went a little nutty from time and again. I know I do and I will admit it. So the realness of the characters is what draws us in and the corky weird things that may happen is what entertains and keeps us watching and guess what will happen next. But over all I think that Shonda Rhimes and her writing staff did a great job. You may of thought it was alittle out there but you watched. You dont get rated the #1 show on prime time for nothing or for bad writing. You get that title with doing things like "Burning it down" Because if we didnt then it would be a Soap Opera with the same freaking story line for 10+ years. Not yes you will always have an underlying issue but you cant keep doing the same thing over and over again or you will definitely lose viewers.
Now I do have to address the issue that the email stated about how Shonda Rhimes said that woman can't have it all. Obviously she didnt listen well enough to the Podcast or she would of realized that she was saying that about everyone. NOT JUST WOMAN. She was saying that it was ironic that One woman has the perfect private life (family and such) and the other has the perfect career. Showing the you could have both. And how that was kind of what the Chief was like because he choose his career over his family life and with Derek telling him to try again and be chief he could do things differently. Now I dont know about you but to me I think that she is setting it up to show that yes most people think that you cant have it all (hence Bailey and Callie) but if you have a second chance what would you do differently and the chief has that.
The next thing that I thought was absolutely ludacris was that because she wrote in infidelity, abortion, and etc that we are losing the value of the show. That is crap. Wake up that is life. People every day are getting married and divorce or there is always going to be people out there that cheat on there significant other. That is life, it has been that way for centuries and I am pretty sure that for years to come and until the end of time there will be at least one person that will cheat on there partner. It is a fact of life hence why it should be in the show. Now I know that topic of Abortion is a touchy subject for most people but it happens. People do have them, whether anyone thinks that it is right or wrong, people do have them and there is nothing that anyone can say that will stop that. so why should it not be taked about. Contraversy is a good thing. It keeps people on there toes and it make you really think for your self and form your own opinion.
But over all I guess what I am trying to say is that I love this show. I will watch it till the day it stops or I die which ever come first. And if it ever were to not be on. Thank god I have the DVD's so I will always be able to watch it. And one last thought and much as everyone is complaining about the show they must be doing something right because if you are using that much energy and talking about it that much you are hook. Because the only time the Shonda Rhimes should worry is if no one is talking about the show then that means that the public has lost interest in the show.
Honestly, I think that people need to settle down. This is just a T.V. show, not a real-life documentary. I understand that the storyline could be happier and better. However..I think that everyone should give season 4 a try. I know that I'm excited for it, because the end of season 3 was like a cliffhanger..it keeps you wondering and curious. I think its ridiculous that people would actually write a letter to the writers of GA. That's so absurd...leave it be, and wait to see what happens.
Slon really deserves to commit to Allison! And well, yes the letter is harsh but it is true, the show could have been better. I still love Grey's Anatomy but it will be a shame to watch it change. And Burke was such a great character in the show, I believe it would be difficult to fill the gap again in season four. Good Luck...
The show became too dark and miserable in season three, and I think it really needs to get it's fun spark back by season four. That's what this show is so famous for! Well, that and the passionate relationships never found on any other show.
I do agree with the letter, although it is a bit harsh. Season three indeed lacks the thrill and adventure in watching the first two seasons. Izzie is too random and lost, she jumps from "loving" one to another, feeling so passionate towards each one, it is so unrealistic. And the Meredith - Derik chase is really getting old, if the writers don't want them to be together so it would not be a "happily ever after" cliche, that is really not a good idea. Some happiness really should enter Meredith's life, and more maturity and stability into Izzie's life aswell.
How about getting ABC to get Dr. Burke back on the show for Season 5 at least. I don't know about others, but I could've watched him and also the Burktina couple for season after season after season.
Come on now ABC, I am sure the old issue has blown over, as it is it was blown way out of proportion to begin with. Time to heal the wounds, to tie loose ends, get closure by getting (St. Sebastian), the injured, mortally wounded, embittered IW back. Time to make wrongs right again. Time to right the grave injustice done to a fine actor; > he did not deserve to lose his livelihood and reputation all in one go! for one wrongful word ?
Dr Burke's role was an asset the show, added character and depth and very fine qualities. Anyway, Dr Burke was also most like doctors in real life are, him and Dr Bailey, are most representative of doctors than any of the rest of the frivolous bunch. The interns are fun but they cannot define the show. IW is a strong actor and having him back on the show may raise it from the slutfest it has become on Season 4, ....gag.
I hope ABC comes to its senses and gets IW back. I am sure he will be only too happy, his best role was as Dr Burke on GA show.
As for the bias, imagine > how would it be if doctors stood up as a group and started the campaign about the way they are depicted? Not always moral, do doctors even get time to have sex on the job?? wow
> How come no group objected to the use of the word 'Nazi' on the show ? Yetttt everyone began to bay for IW's blood coz of one unfortunate word.
I guess the cause to pick... depends on who is getting what from it, def in this case at least !
Bias can be so selective esp if they serve self-gains, what say TRH and KH ?

IW didn't use an unfortunate word. It was the context & what he meant by it. Then he lied. Just imagine someone saying I'm not your nigger or slave. That's what he said in reference to the other actor. The stereotype of being gay & a sissy. IW simply thinks he's someone great. Far from an educated doctor. He's an actor, that's all. He's probably done very little for anyone but himself in his life & obviously if you waste a few moments of his precious time he'll have a few derogatory terms to throw around.
I think enough has been said.
We all know now that the show completely sucks now.
I quit watching halfway into the 4th season, and so did my friends.. we're trying to recruit more people, and so far everyone has been willing to spend their thursday nights out, or watching different program.
A sort of, 'Anti Grey's' society thing.. if you will.
Too tired of the crap.. 'Seriously'
Could not take it anymore.
I felt like it was ME that was going to need therapy after watching a show like that.. and I really don't need to have my Friday's completely ruined because I was pissed off about Grey's the night before.
Good luck with what's left of your show shonda (Which is hardly anything).. all though I highly doubt you'll have a spot for grey's anatomy anymore on ABC due to your lowering ratings.
Please, ABC..
