What is it with Grey’s Anatomy and homosexual-related scandals?! Apparently, Brooke Smith’s character Erica Hahn has been written off the show. If you’ve been keeping up with Grey’s these days, then you know Dr. Erica Hahn and Callie have recently started dating and exploring the whole same-sex relationship lifestyle. Word is, ABC got cold feet on the story arc and not only want it to end, but also want Hahn gone.
EW’s Ausiello reported this tonight: “According to one Grey's source, the suits ‘had issues’ with both the explicit direction Callica was taking (think: undiscovered country, south of the border, etc.) and, more importantly, with the Hahn character in general. Basically, they didn't like her and wanted her gone ASAP.” And it appears they really meant the “ASAP” part. Smith’s last episode is this Thursday. Ausiello spoke with Smith about her departure and she said, “ I'm not written out. My final scene is just me heading to my car. I honestly don't know what happens in the next episode. I heard not much.”
I’m not sure what to make of this. Sure, there’s been some explicit dialogue between Callie and Erica, oftentimes using mildly-disguised analogies when discussing the sex-aspect of their budding romance but I wouldn’t say that it’s all that more explicit than seeing Derek slide Meredith’s undies off in an exam room during the Seattle Grace prom (while Derek’s wife and Meredith’s boyfriend were waiting for them at the big dance) a few seasons back. If anything, I found Callie’s insistence on using fellow doctor Mark Sloan as a guinea pig in an effort to lesbianify herself to be more icky (to use Smith’s word) than anything else that’s been shown with this story arc.
Even putting aside ABC having reservations about such an openly sexual gay relationship on one of their series, what issues do they have with “the Hahn character” (if what Ausiello says is true)? The Hahn side of the story, which portrays a woman discovering something about herself that she never realized existed is probably the best aspect of the arc. It’s a shame they weren’t able to at least give it some proper closure. From the sounds of it, after this Thursday, she’s just gone. Perhaps they’ll go the Burke-route and reference her a few times in future episodes but even though Hahn hasn’t been around as long, much like with Burke’s absence the sudden Hahn-disappearance is going to leave a bit of a hole in the season, at least until the writers can find something else to do with Callie.

I didn't want hahn off because of the lesbianism (although i was not particularly fond of the "south of the border" kind of thing, sorry) i just found the general character unbelievably irritating. the way she talked... the way she acted... UGH. i couldn't stand her from the beginning, before there was any hint of anything between her and callie.
I have loved Grey's for years and this was a real let down. I heard that she was leaving well disappearing and I was really not happy and did not understand. I was a little uncomfortable with the whole going down thing too but that it was real and that is what I think some women needed to see. I thought that building a healthy lesbian couple into a popular show like they did in ER was great for Grey's. Women are the primary viewers of these shows and all women need to have someone that they can relate to on their favorite show whether that be lesbian, straight, old, young, black, white or crazy like Izzy. I was proud that ABC was making this a priority but I guess I was wrong about that. I hope that they see that viewers are not happy and maybe bring Hahn back. She was in your face real but not bitchy just cut throat and serious but had such a happy laid back side with Callie and that was real. It was not the same last night without her. I think that the new girl is awful and annoying and does not belong. I hope that they bring Hahn back and finish the story. I love Callie and want her to be happy. She shows bigger women in such a great light and is so dedicated, she deserves to have a happy story line.
At first I was glad that she was gone. Her character as a whole was irritating to me. She's so rude all the time. And its not a funny rude like yang, just an ugly rude. I also didn't like the open sexual comments about going down on each other or the experiments with Sloan to perfect her newly found "skill". Those few episodes were so tacky. But now Meredith has this "old best friend" that just popped up out of nowhere who is even more irritating to me. They had to replace a lesbian with a complete slut! GREAT. If this chick is a regular now, I'm going to have stop watching my favorite show.
This is ridiculous. You can have all kinds of heterosexual sex but let there be an honest, compelling storyline involving lesbians and ABC gets cold feet. Excuse me, but is this not the same network who does Desperate Housewives?? Are you kidding me with this? You can have a teenager having sex with a MARRIED woman whom he gets pregnant but you can't have a great lesbian storyline?? News flash, ABC- lesbians are real people. We are everywhere and we deserve the same air time. I started watching Grey's Anatomy when I caught the beginning scenes between Erica and Callie. I was so happy that a major network was standing up for us. What characters on TV are we supposed to relate to? Adulterers? Sex addicts? Drug addicts? Murderers? That's what is on. I guess it's okay to have a teenager sleep with a grown woman, liars and cheaters, and shady circumstances but for God's sake don't show genuine love between two women. Thanks for setting gay rights even further back. We really needed that.
The actress and the character were very real, human and compelling. Interesting that the one character who spoke truth, who told it like it is, and showed she was willing to be "real," is the one being canned. Once again, the "suits" have their heads up their asses.
The Callie-Hahn storyline was complicated and that made it interesting. Hahn was the female version of McKidd's new character. I guess the "suits" felt emasculated by the strong female character. She was intelligent and actually had a GROWTH ARC, unlike the whiny and boring Meredith, or the shallow Izzy.
If they were to can anyone, it should have been Heigl. She's too full of herself and cannot act! They should put her in a coma for a few episodes, WITHOUT Denny on the "other" side.
I love Christina. I love George. We have some great actors with dynamic layered characters.
Why on earth would you sacrifice Hahn? It's idiotic. A few more moves like that and I'll find another way to spend my 9pm slot.
The "leaves" speech Hahn gave was actually really touchng, but the funny trhing is I think all love is like that, suddenlyyou open your eyes and for the first time you can see... overwhelming. It is really too bad, becaue even if Callie and Hahn wouldnt have ended up together, Hahns story should be far from over.
