Good writing is essential for a solid TV show. That may be stating the obvious, but it’s true. This year’s Writers Guild Awards took place this weekend, and from the list of winners in TV categories, it seems the WGA got it right in recognizing the writing for some of the best shows on television.

As a fan of Breaking Bad, Homeland, and Modern Family, it’s hard to argue with this of winners. Writers for the mentioned shows were among the winners at last night’s WGA awards, with Breaking Bad winning for Best Drama Series, and Homeland winning for Best New Drama. Both series tied with one another for Best Episodes in the drama category, with Vince Gilligan credited for “Box Cutter,” and Henry Bromell credited for Homeland’s “The Good Soldier.” Meanwhile, while HBO was nudged out of the series categories for wins, the pay-cable network did managed to nab both Long Form awards (original and adapted) for Too Big To Fail and Cinema Verite.
