Among the new dramas set to debut next week is CBS' Hostages, a thriller executive produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, which stars Toni Collette as a doctor tasked to perform surgery on the president. As though that weren't a stressful task on its own, Ellen's family is taken hostage by a rogue FBI agent (Dylan McDermott), who wants her to assassinate the President while he on the operating table.
One of the interesting things about the latest trailer reveals is that this is a "15 episode thriller," which may indicate that CBS isn't intending for this project to go beyond one season. Of course, that's what we all expected from Under the Dome and that was renewed for Season 2, so who knows? Given the nature of the premise, it seems like the kind of story that would suffer if they tried to make it go on forever. Some stories are better off packaged in a specific amount of episodes.
Beyond that, what the trailer offers is a run-through of the premise, making it very clear that Dylan McDarmott's character, the eventual villain of the story, started out as a good guy. But something happened to turn Duncan Carlisle against his country, and now he wants to kill the president. Meanwhile, we have Dr. Ellen Sanders (Collette), a successful surgeon who's obviously done very well for herself if she's been chosen to be the one to cut into the President of the United States. His life is in her hands, which makes her a prime candidate for assassin-work, which is what Carlisle has planned for her.
The full description for the series mentions that Ellen has an "overbearing husband" (Tate Donovan) and secretive daughter (Quinn Shephard), which is an indication that the drama won't be entirely related to the hostage situation or the president. Things tend to come out when families are under a lot of pressure, and that could play a factor in the bigger picture. The description also includes some mentions about Duncan's team:
HOSTAGES, from executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer, stars Emmy Award winner Toni Collette and Golden Globe Award winner Dylan McDermott in a high-octane suspense drama about Dr. Ellen Sanders, a premiere surgeon thrust into a chilling political conspiracy when her family is taken hostage by rogue FBI Agent Duncan Carlisle. Ellen and her family are held captive in their home by Carlisle, a desperate man doing the wrong thing for the right reasons, who orders her to assassinate the President when she operates on him.
Will Hostages be the high-octane suspense thriller the previews promise? We'll find out when the series premieres Monday, September 22 at 10:00 p.m. ET on CBS.
