Kristin Wiig Adresses SNL Departure Rumors, Future In Dramatic Roles
The rumors regarding Kristin Wiig’s potential departure from SNL have been growing, and with her contract up at the end of the month fans have been wondering when the announcement might be made. Is she ready to exit the SNL stage for good? Where will she go next? Here’s what she had to say to Alec Baldwin in his podcast this morning.
Wiig, who is among several SNL players rumored to be leaving after this season, chatted with Alec Baldwin on Here’s The Thing, and addressed the rumors of her departure with a resounding “I don’t know.” She went on in a little more detail:
”Everyone has to leave…and I will say that when I do leave, it’s not because I’m sick of it and not because I see something better or anything like that. It’s just that it’s time. When I do leave, it will be the hardest thing”
Since her success in Bridesmaids Wiig has been on the short-list of SNL players ready to make the leap to a career beyond Saturday nights. She told Baldwin that she’s in search of new projects, and would like to try her hand at a dramatic role, which comes as a surprise to many. Certainly Lorne Michaels has been preparing for her potential departure, and has been on the hunt for female additions to the SNL cast.
Departure from SNL has been a mixed bag for other stars of the show. Many have gone on to A-list acting careers, while others have slipped quietly back into obscurity. It seems unlikely that the latter will be the case for Wiig if she goes, and with her talents much in demand, it seems a smart time to move on. Clearly we’ll have to wait a little longer for a more definitive answer, but either way we'll be seeing more of Wiig outside SNL.
