Lost's Hurley Joins Abrams' Alcatraz
There will never be another prison like Alcatraz. Situated on a creepy island within eye sight of San Francisco, the former federal penitentiary once housed the worst of the worst during an era when many Americans were crime-obsessed. From Al Capone to Alvin “Creepy” Karpis to one of the infamous Barker brothers to Machine Gun Kelly, many of the most colorful felons in history lived, worked and attempted to escape from the high security island. Not surprisingly, plenty of movies from The Rock to Escape From Alcatraz have capitalized on the prison’s mystique. Now, J.J. Abrams is ready to try his hand, and he’s bringing along an old friend.
According to Deadline, Jorge Garcia, better known as “Hurley” from Lost, has been cast in Abrams’ new Fox pilot obviously titled Alcatraz. Garcia will play Dr. Diego Soto, the world’s foremost expert on The Rock. No one else has yet been cast, though details of the overall plot are now emerging. Apparently, a special team of FBI agents will work to unravel a mystery surrounding several prisoners and guards who suddenly reappear after vanishing decades ago. Yes, it is very confusing.
Does Alcatraz involve time travel? No word yet, but anyone who did time at the prison would have to be at least in their seventies considering The Rock closed almost fifty years ago.
The pilot begins shooting in January. If all goes well, look for Alcatraz to find its way onto the Fox schedule next Fall.
