MTV Planning New Redneck MMA Series About Cage Fights

If you’ve ever purchased a backyard wrestling DVD out of one of those cheap movie bins at Best Buy, the following show is geared toward you. MTV has just given a production order to a new series entitled Caged. The serial documentary follows a group of Louisiana rednecks who hold cage fights to keep themselves entertained. Contrary to the type of mixed martial arts you may have seen on television, these altercations do not net the participants money to live off of or international fame, but they do serve as a dangerous and exciting way to pass the time.

According to Variety, Caged will spend a good portion of its run time getting to know the fighters, each of whom is trying to figure out what to do with his life. Past high school age and lacking gainful employment, they’ll look for suitable careers, presumably ones that don’t mind bruises. I wouldn’t count on parlaying this reality show into something bigger, a la Jersey Shore, but then again, you never know what subculture the world might be briefly excited by next.

Principal photography is scheduled to begin within the next few months on Caged. Provided none of the fighters die, the show should find a timeslot sometime early in 2012 on MTV. Commence eye rolling or fist pumping.
