Martin Starr Guest Stars As A Poli-Sci Professor On NBC's Community
Martin Starr, one of my favorite, and surely one of the most underappreciated and underused comedic supporting actors, has just signed on to do a guest spot on one of my favorite sitcoms, NBC's Community. The former Party Down-er and member of the "Apatow troupe" will be at Greendale Community College for (at least) one episode in the upcoming third season.
Starr will not be attending the school as a fellow student, however. Instead, as with many of Community's guest spot opportunities, his role will professorial in nature. TVLine, who broke the news, describes the episode and role: when the group "venture into the fun-filled world of Model UN simulations, the Party Down scene-stealer pops up as their fearless poly-sci professor and project advisor." A poli-sci prof (sorry, TVLine but I don't think you meant "many-science" professor) seems like a good fit for the always-on-his-game comedian. Actually, I can imagine this character being very similar to his aspiring and fiercely intelligent writer stuck doing "the work of lazy morons" in Greg Motolla's Adventureland.
The article adds that the spot might have come about because Starr (and his Party Down co-star, Lizzy Caplan) just appeared in a film with Alison Brie called Save the Date. I'm not sure how much influence the actors have on casting suggestions, but in any case, they couldn't have found a funnier man. You may know Starr from his extensive work in the Apatow universe (Knocked Up and Superbad), but I know I'll never forget the first time I saw him as Bill on Freaks and Geeks, by far my favorite character on the short-lived series. You can also catch star in the new Adult Swim comedy NTSF:SD:SUV::.
NBC's Community returns Thursday, Sept. 22nd at 8:00 p.m. ET.
