Mike Judge Developing Live-Action Comedy Silicon Valley At HBO
Since King of the Hill wrapped up on Fox, Mike Judge has moved on to a comeback for MTV's Beavis & Butt-Head, the animated series that helped put the writer on the map back in the 90's. Next up, he's back to dabbling in live-action scripted comedy as he's teaming up with King of the Hill executive producers John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky for a comedy for HBO. Scott Rudin is also on board to executive produce.
Deadline reports that HBO has greenlit a single-camera comedy pilot by Judge called Silicon Valley. The title is a reference to the story and the high tech gold rush of Silicon Valley "where the people most qualified to succeed are the least capable of handling success."
While it's not directly described as a work-place comedy, the project sounds like it leans in that direction and if that's the case, that's definitely a good thing. In addition to being known for series like Beavis & Butt-Head and King of the Hill, one of Judge's other claims to fame is Office Space, a work-place comedy film that hits home for anyone who's ever battled with a fax machine.
This project is still only in the pilot stage, but given Judge's success in television, I have high hopes that Silicon Valley will land a series order. With that said, HBO comedies tend to be hit or miss, but the premium cable station would give Judge and the other writers a bit more flexibility in terms of content, which could definitely be interesting.
