Most people hate remakes. I do as a rule. But I’m also willing to give them a chance if based on something I really loved. Or if they’re as good as Battlestar Galactica. With that said I’m a little wary of NBC’s decision to greenlight Friday Night Lights executive producer Jason Katims version of Parenthood. Yup, for a third time Gil Buckman will be overwhelmed by being a father.
According to Variety this third attempt will have new characters, but stay true to the film itself. Really? Because while it was a great film I remember watching as a kid I seem to remember lots of porn jokes, dildoes, and sex in the movie. Ron Howard’s Parenthood was not something most networks would show in primetime without some editing.
Also this attempt was made by NBC and Ron Howard back in the early 90s with Ed Begley Jr. in the lead role. I don’t remember the show, but I know enough that it failed miserably. Despite having Joss Whedon on board as a writer the half-hour comedy just didn’t hit. NBC is hoping an hour-long dramedy will fare better in today’s world. NBC has been playing it safe with their decisions lately, except they keep coming back to bite them. A remake of another 80s hit, Knight Rider, was an abysmal failure.
I’m on board for a Parenthood TV show, but I’m not going to get too excited until I see what I loved about the film remains intact here. I’ll assume that roller coasters will be a central theme.
By the way, keep an eye on our DVD Section. I’m sure a 20th Anniversary Super Duper You Get More Out A Roller Coaster Edition of the movie on Blu-ray and DVD is about to be announced any moment.
