Among the new drama series set to premiere on CBS this fall is The Mentalist. For those of you who love those procedurals, I think this one’s for you. The Mentalist stars The Devil Wears Prada’s Simon Baker and centers on a detective who finds the bad-guy by analyzing their behavior through clues left behind at the crime scene.
“THE MENTALIST stars Golden Globe Award nominee Simon Baker (The Devil Wears Prada) as Patrick Jane, a detective and independent consultant with the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI), who has a remarkable track record for solving serious crimes by using his razor sharp skills of observation. Within the Bureau, Jane is notorious for his blatant lack of protocol and his semi-celebrity past as a psychic medium, whose paranormal abilities he now admits he feigned. Jane's role in cracking a series of tough high-profile cases is greatly valued by his fellow agents. However, no-nonsense Senior Agent Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney, Prison Break) openly resists having Jane in her unit and alternates between reluctantly acknowledging Jane's usefulness and blasting him for his theatrics, narcissism and dangerous lack of boundaries. Lisbon's team includes agents Kimball Cho (Tim Kang, Rambo), Wayne Rigsby (Owain Yeoman, The Nine), and rookie member Grace Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti, The O.C.), who all think Jane's a loose cannon but admire his charm and knack for clearing cases. Bruno Heller (creator of Rome) is creator/executive producer, and Emmy Award winner David Nutter (Band of Brothers) is the executive producer for Warner Bros. Television. ”
Based on the description, this series sounds like a cross between the movie Se7en and the USA TV series, Psych. The main character has the keen ability to see what others overlook except, unlike Psych, which undercuts their crime-mystery stories with a bit of comedy in each episode, I’m guessing by the preview that The Mentalist is going to more serious, dark and twisty route. Looks like it could be good.
As it stands right now, The Mentalist will air on CBS on Tuesday nights at 9:00 p.m. starting this fall.

I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!! it is amazing and hilarious and everyone who dislikes it doesnt know a great show when they see it!! i cant wait to watch the next episode
I've been watching The Mentalist on line (until last week when CBS took it off of their website). I guess I'll watch it during regular programming and watch Fringe on line later. I can't decide. I did find a Japanese web site that plays the show online but it has their subtitles.
If CBS is going to continue with The Mentalist they should put it back on line for those of us who like other shows during the same time slot (and whose wife DVR's two other shows already during the same time).
I do not give a snot what the others say ........I LOVE THE MENTALIST. Others don't seem to know a good show when they see it. Maybe they should buy some glasses. maybe you should not give a comment if you have not seen more than just the pilot episode.
Great program, I have enjoyed the shows since Sept. please do not cancel this show! There have been a lot of program cancellations, lets keep this alive, Thanks
I've now viewed two episodes. The plots are intriguing, the characters are above average and the program is entirely unbelievable. "Why?", you ask? Baker's character and his portrayal of it are solid. The other actors have done a credible job in making their characters seem 'real'. The problem is with the writers. In both shows, the 'professionals' have not had a 'clue' in figuring out or solving the crimes. The viewer asks, What good are they?". Simon is doing it all... all by himself. The professionals contribute nothing. They could be written out of the script without any loss in the story-line. Why didn't they have The Mentalist just sit at home, wait for calls from police all over the U.S. and respond to the ones he finds interesting. The production company would spend less on character salaries and the program would be a lot more believable.
There are only a few legit "mentalists" around doing entertainment that is appropriate and sophisticated. Check out www.RichFerguson.com. He's been on numerous other tv shows and was a finalist on another NBC reality show. Rich wrote the book on the subject of observation and was tested off the charts. Mentalism is a fine art indeed. Observation, deducting, strategy, etc are all important skills of a true mentalist not using silly magic tricks. This show seems pretty accurate so far as far as a mentalist observing what other miss. If you want your minds blown, check out Rich Ferguson.
I liked it; it was entertaining and moved well as for the cast Joe seamed fine to me. I for one enjoyed it and yes I will watch it and Psych. Everyone should remember that this is TV and that means it is entertainment. If you enjoyed it watch it if you did not don’t watch.
For heavens sake people it is a TV program everything out there is a ripe off of something. We rip off Briton they tip off Australia and they rip off us, who cares if it's not a bloody reality show I will watch it.
If you want to complain about anything try complaining about the amount of commercials, 42 minutes of program and 18 minutes of commercials.
Is this show based upon the former NYPD Cop, Riley G - Psychic Detective that hunted serial killers in Australia years ago? I have followed him from his website at http://www.RileyG.com
I know that the skeptic groups, to included James Randi hate Riley G with a passion.
CBS insists that it's not a comedy, but I couldn't stop laughing at the show's trailer. If the show is really that much of a copy of Psych, it'll be satirical.
I cannot believe how much they are trying to copy Psych. Hmm, a guy who picks up on the little details, is mistaken for a psychic, and works with detectives to solve crimes. Nothing can compare to Psych.
This show sucks, for crying out loud if this is the best you can produce get into another business. The cast had about as much chemistry as two dirty socks in a hamper. ten thumbs down.
