Paramount just can't leave well enough alone. Determined to squeeze every last dollar out of Star Trek, now they're not only making a prequel movie to tamper with existing continuity, they're going back and altering the original "Star Trek" TV episodes in order to re-package and re-sell them to syndication networks.
The guys over at The Trek Report say that while it's not yet a done deal, Paramount is planning to offer an HDTV version of the original "Star Trek" with new, modernized, jazzed-up special effects.
HDTV version would be great, but new, computer generated effects? Most of the CGI will be limited to space sequences, but I'm not sure that really excuses it. Besides, won't it look kind of weird to see Kirk and Spock standing around in 60's era sets and 60's era uniforms only to switch to an exterior shot of a slick, CGI'd up ship swooping through space like a warp speed condor? It just won't fit.
The changes won't end with new space effects. Rumor has it that they're also changing the show's original music. Whether that's limited to the opening theme or if we're talking about Paramount redoing the show's entire soundtrack is unknown.
I guess Paramount, seeing how much money has been made off the Star Wars prequels decided to make their own prequels for Trek, and now they're generating their own Greedo shoots first to go along with it.
With Hollywood in the midst of a horrific remake, redo fever it's a bad time to be a fan of anything. The only bright spot in all of this is that they may not be taking an eraser to all 79 original episodes. This may just be a gimmick they'll use on a handful and then forget. Let's hope so. If they're only talking about doing it on one or two for kicks, that could be fun. If they're talking about pulling a Lucas and replacing the original shows with bastardized versions, let's start planning riots.
