Pratchett To Paint UK TV The Colour Of Magic

By Steve West: 2007-05-08 23:03:40
Pratchett To Paint UK TV The Colour Of Magic I can not attest to the quality of the Terry Pratchett movie The Hogfather from last year on Britains SKY network. On the other hand, a Pratchett film being made is oh so sweet. It was honestly news to me that this had already been done, and it sounds to be a fair effort because theyre doubling the budget and putting the original Discworld story to film. The Colour of Magic, complete with superfluous extra u, is preparing to go into production.

Press in the UK reported that David Jason is set to play Rincewind. I have no idea who he is, so I cant say how I feel about him playing the failed wizard. He was in The Hogfather, and extra bonus points to voicing Danger Mouse should definitely be awarded. A tipster over at AintItCool also clued us in on an American whos been cast as Twoflower, Rincewinds companion. He hopes its Steve Carrell, I have to agree that it fits with the character. Personally, I always associated Twoflower with Japanese tourists though. But yeah, an American tourist with no clue of his surroundings and whats really happening would work. Im sure when I visited London I over tipped, although I dont recall parting with a pure gold Agatean coin.

Theres no official word on any of this, and the Carrell item is the purest of speculation, but itll be interesting to see how the story is handled. The book itself is almost a set of short stories with the same characters. As long as Pratchetts wit and humor remains intact, Ill seek this out.

  • I've always imagined Bill Nighy as Rincewind. But Jason did a fairly good job.
  • steve carrell...EEEEEEW! as Twoflower EEEEEEW!

Yeah Rhys Ifans would be a good Rincewind!!!
  • I was Gobsmacked to see David Jason Cast again in a roll not suited to his appearance and am begining to think he looks taller and thinner in his acting cv. Both the characters he has reprised in the discworld are both described as tall and thin. Terry Pratchett is actually quotable as saying Rincewind is a charecter Paul Kidby (the artist) gets spot on.

But when you realise that David jason is on the casting commitee for both adaptations you think, i see the link here.

Besides that David Jason is a fantastic actor and i'm sure will be fantastic and very amusing in the role and i'll soon forget that he looks nothing like the charecter and settle down to the fantastic casting for Cohen.

this is a link to what david jason will look like as Rincewind in The Colour Of Magic Film. he may not match the description of Rincewind in the book but i think he will do a great job.

they choose the guy who plays as Filch (care-taker) from Harry Potter to be Cohan to which is a perfect fit for the job lol exaclty how i imagined him.

Check out the info on IMDB.com for the list of actors

  • I too was lucky enough (about 50 of us) to be an extra on the filming of the Colour of Magic/Light Fantastic. There seems to be reaaly good chemistry between David and Sean. We saw the Broken Drum blown up.... it rattled windows 5 miles from Pinewood apparently.. Due out next Easter -ish
I shall be looking first for a shot of my elbow or the back of my head and then just enjoying it. The Luggage and the Librarian are particularly awesome....

IMDB has some good info and discussions as well.
  • Judging by the blurb, this is going to be a mixture of th first two books, bethan doesn't appear until the light fantastic.
  • How can any one think that David " del boy" Jason could EVER be a good choice for Rincewind. Yes an english man would be prefered but I could thank of two extremly good actors who could do it better. One would be Jonny Depp, just look at his portrail of Jack Sparrow, and the other would be Shaggy himself, Mathew Lillard. They both have the look and the acting abillity about them to do the roll justice. I only hope this will be yet another film for T.V. and not on the big screen for I feel that it will not be welcomed by Pratchett fan like myself and will make a farce of making the beloved books come to life in the future. And I do not want to know howgood and actor David Jason is he is too old and short. How the hell is Rincewind supposed to run with a zimmer frame.
  • As someone who was lucky enough to be an extra for part of The Colour of Magic I had the opportunity to see the chemistry between Rincewind and Twoflower firsthand. Although I only saw a few minutes of dialogue what I saw was very encouraging. David Jason wouldn't have been my first choice for Rincewind but seeing him all dressed up and delivering the lines has left me with faith in the production.

Now we just have to be patient to see what they finally come up with.

  • "complete with superfluous extra “u,”"!? Eh? that's how you spell it correctly and that is how it is in the title of the book! The "u" is neither extra or superfluous.

Poor spelling aside, David Jason is all wrong for the character of Rincewind. Throughout the Discworld series, Rincewind is presented as a skinny, weasely sort of a wizard. I'd always pictured him as tall and wiry - he is built for speed after all, "running from" is everying and he does a lot of that. David Jason is a great actor but not right for this role in terms of build or age...Rhys Iffans maybe, or someone of that mould.

Steve Carell would be all wrong for any prominent part - it would be a huge mistake to include any current "big name" US actor in something like this. The story is fantastic and given the quality of Hogfather, the film itself will stand up on it's own without relying on the latest box-office draw to deliver an audience.
  • Sean Astin has been cast as Twoflower. I think this is totally random - should totally be someone asian = Agatea. oh well. Tim Curry is cast as Trymon - that should be awesome!
David Jason - meh. Could have been better - he is a little old an pudgy, i think.
Can't wait til it's done though!
  • eric idle would be god for the part of rincewind, but i always imagined him as more of a 'john cleese' a-like.

im sure David Jason will do very well, he is a fanstatic actor, and it would be nice to see him on oyr screens again!

for our trans-atlantic cousins, david jason was in only fools & horses. youtube it.

    later.
  • David Jason played Albert in the Hogfather and did it well.
but as Rincewind? erm no thanks. as TwoFlower maybe....

well they had Eric Idle voice him in the games so maybe they might offer him the role. sure he is a little old now and not exactly tall and skinny but he sure would do the role some serious justice.

hogfather suffered from a low tv mini-series budget but this one has a bigger budget. so there is a good chance this one will be way better
  • I can't believe David Jason is going to be Rincewind, he is way too short to get it right, they could be a little more imaginative than that...
  • I'm glad Hogfather did well enough for them to make another Pratchett book, but Hogfather showed me what I was afraid of: that Pratchett books are so layered with internalizations that the humor in them is very difficult to translate onto the screen. Hogfather the book is wonderful prose with wit, charm, and malice. The movie was too glum and dreary. It was a soulless Pratchett story. Hopefully The Colour of Magic captures the light hearted tone of the Rincewind novels.
