Ricky Gervais To Do A Live Podcast During The 2012 Golden Globes?
As great as it would be to see Ricky Gervais return to the Golden Globes to host again, given the choice between a censored, tamer Gervais on the GG stage, and Ricky Gervais uncensored, commentating on the event as it plays out live by podcast, speaking from the comfort of wherever he decides to record it, and perhaps in the company of a few of his hilarious peers, the latter actually sounds better. From what Gervais is saying on his blog, this could actually happen.
It started with an entry in his blog wherein Gervais toyed with the idea of teaming up with some of his hilarious pals (Louis CK, Chris Rock, Karl Pilington, Jon Stewart, and Larry David were the mentioned names) and doing a 3-hour live podcast during the Golden Globes. “People at home can have the telly on with the sound down listening to us online say things that no broadcaster could get away with,” he suggested.
Gervais’ next blog entry spoke of the amazing feedback he received to the previous post. It should come to no one’s surprise that plenty of people were in love with the idea of an uncensored Gervais offering commentary on the awards ceremony as it plays out. Gervais went on to clarify that this would not be “some sort of anti-establishment stunt.” According to him, it’s more about artistic freedom.
Nothing is set in stone at this point. Gervais states that he’s “looking into it” and that it might not happen. “I might not even be available,” he posted. “Who knows, I might be at The Golden Globes. (awkward silence.)”
A stunt like this, should it actually happen, could be the start of something really great. Once upon a time, the only options we had with regards to how we watch awards ceremonies is deciding which red-carpet special to watch before the big show. The option to have a comedic-commentary playing over the actual awards ceremony, in the form of Gervais’ podcast, could change the whole viewing experience. I love it. I hope Gervais is able to work this out and if he can get any of the mentioned comedians to join him for it, all the better.
