Ricky Gervais Not Guest Starring In The Office FinaleAuthor: Kelly West

If you heard the rumors that Ricky Gervais, the creator and star of the original (UK) version of The Office was going to reprise his role as David Brent to guest star in the final episode of the US version of The Office, there’s good news and bad news. The bad news is the rumor isn’t true. The good news is the writers aren’t even thinking about the series finale right now!
The UK’s Daily Record posted the news that Gervais would be coming to Dunder Mifflin as David Brent for the series’ last episode. Since there’s been no word that the series might be coming to an end anytime soon, I thought this was kind of strange. Not that it wouldn’t be brilliant to see David Brent at Dunder Mifflin Scranton but why would they be setting him up for the last episode unless the series finale was on the horizon? E! Online’s Kristin Dos Santos debunked the rumor, posting that Office exec producer Paul Lieberstein stated, “We love Ricky, but have not had any discussions about an appearance on the U.S. show. And we haven't given any thought to the final show because it is probably a zillion episodes away.” As much as those of us who embrace the original Office series would love to see David Brent saunter into the DM Scranton branch and go head to head with Michael as far as the tasteless jokes and foot-in-mouth comments go, do we really want to start thinking about the series' final episode? I’m glad the writers aren’t. But still, Lieberstein, Greg Daniels and all of the other Office writers, if you’re reading this, seriously: Ricky Gervais on The Office (US) would be the brilliance squared. |
