Rumors Fly About The Fate Of CW's Veronica MarsAuthor: Kelly West

It looks like it could be curtains for ‘Veronica Mars’. Rumors are starting to circulate that the drama could be dropped after its third season comes to a close or that the format of the show might be changing drastically. The fate of ‘Mars’ has been up in the air for over a year now. Fans feared the show would not be picked up by The CW when UPN and The WB first merged. Whether the show is going to be cancelled or restructured has not been officially confirmed as of yet but here is what we do know…
Yesterday, Eonline.com’s Kristin Veitch stated that she heard from a number of sources that the CW had decided not to pick the show up for another season this fall. Veitch quoted the show’s creator, Rob Thomas as saying, “I’ve never been less certain of our fate. I’m afraid I’ve gone from cautiously optimistic to something less than that.” Later in the evening she reported that she heard from “CW insiders” that the network was considering changing the format of the show by jumping four years into the future and having the post-college Veronica working as an FBI agent. What? Skip over the overly dramatic college years and put our girl where the real action is? This actually might not be a bad idea. If there’s one thing TV history has taught us, it’s that “The College Years” rarely live up to the earlier seasons of shows that start out as high school dramas. Perhaps skipping over the next few years of Veronica’s life and jumping into the adult version of the series is just what the show needs to keep it going and hold on to their viewers. Veitch summarized her blog by saying that the fate of the show is still up in the air at this point. ‘Mars’ may be getting cancelled or kept around with a new format or the show could come back in the fall with Veronica in her second year of college. Either way, she is trying to rally people’s support for the series and has posted the mailing address for the President of Entertainment at The CW network. If you want to send a “Save Veronica” postcard to the network, here is the address: President of Entertainment, The CW Television Network 4000 Warner Blvd., Bldg 168 Burbank, CA 91522-0002 On a personal note, I think the CW would be foolish to give up one of its best written shows. It may not get huge ratings but it does have fairly large amount of devoted fans – fans who would be exposed to other CW shows if they had a reason to flip to the network once in a while. The CW network comes on twice a week in my household. Once for ‘Smallville’ and once for ‘Veronica Mars.’ Dropping one of their best shows from the line-up could mean allowing a lot of viewers to slip away from the network entirely. As a semi-new network, they are still setting the standard for the quality of programming they offer their viewers. While ratings (and advertising dollars) are very important, so is delivering a solid, smart product. Don’t let us down, CW! LATEST UPDATE: Veitch of Eonline.com added to her blog today that the fate of the show will be determined at this year’s CW upfront on May 17th. She also said that her sources tell her the show will either come back in it’s new FBI format or not at all. So I guess the most we can hope for is that Thomas, who is working on the trailer to pitch to the network which will give them an idea of what the re-imagined series will be like, blows everyone away with his new concept otherwise we might have to prepare ourselves to say good bye to ‘Mars’ forever. |
