Moonlight fans are not happy. This is an understatement. Since CBS announced the cancellation of the vampire series, Moonlight fans have been going nuts. It’s like Jericho all over again only somehow this seems even crazier. Today I received an email containing information regarding a plan for Moonlight fans to rally together outside Warner Bros gate in an attempt to show people just how beloved the series is.

The press release, which lists Moonlightline.com as the source, states that plans for the big MoonlightCon 2008 have changed. Here’s the relevant information:

“Hundred’s of Moonlight fans, located from various cities and states across the US, had originally scheduled flying into Los Angeles, CA, to attend MoonlightCon 2008 during Memorial Day Weekend (May 24th & 25th).

However, due to the show’s cancellation, an impromptu decision was made to hold a rally outside the Warner Bros gate at the corner of North Pass and West Olive streets on Friday, May 23rd at 2:00 pm PST.

This is a support rally for Warner Bros, Silver Pictures and Moonlight; not a protest against CBS.

In addition, Moonlight fans have sponsored an ad to run in both The Hollywood Reporter (Wednesday, May 21st) and Variety (Thursday, May 22nd). The purpose of this ad is two-fold; to thank the cast, crew and all those who made Moonlight possible and to demonstrate to potential networks the depth of the fans loyalty to Moonlight.”

I thought Moonlight was an OK show but the enthusiasm of its fans kind of freaks me out. That said, they’ve done some good stuff on behalf of their love for the show, like organizing a blood drive so I suppose I can overlook the crazed-fandom thing for the sake of the people who benefited from that.

When it comes to fans rallying together to save a show, I have to wonder how much it really helps. I suppose if CBS were on the fence about cancelling the series to begin with, they might be willing to reconsider the decision if the fans were to make a big enough fuss. At the same time, if they’re set on washing their hands of Moonlight (and the series’ fans) then I doubt there’s anything fans could do to change the minds of the network big-wigs. If anything, the rally could serve as a nice way for Moonlight fans to lean on each other in their time of grief.
