Star Jones Makes A Less Than Graceful Exit From The View

By Kelly West: 2006-06-29 00:00:00
Star Jones Makes A Less Than Graceful Exit From The View ‘The View’ is short one seat at the table for now. As has been reported everywhere, Star Jones made her “grand” exit from ‘The View’ after prematurely announcing that she would not be coming back next fall. What should’ve been a quiet farewell has turned into an all out she-said/she-said verbal war among the women of the popular talk show. Star Jones is claiming that she felt like she was fired from the show. We can only assume the network pulled the typical corporate “We would like to ask you to resign and leave quietly” deal which is a nice way of saying “if you don’t quit, we’re going to fire you and you.”.

The announcement of Jones’ departure from the show was set to be made next week but Jones apparently decided she wanted to go on her own terms. After her announcement she was asked by the network not to return to finish out the season. No teary farewell episode for Ms. Jones. Instead she got to go out with a bang because lets face it, a controversy always gets more attention than a lame video montage showing old clips of Jones’ most memorable ‘View’ moments set to “That’s What Friends Are For” or whatever it is they had planned for her.

How long before Jones gets her own talk show?

  • First off, I'm on Star's side.
I have not watched The View since Star left and I have no plans to ever watch it again.

I hope the show gets cancelled!

What buisness is it of Rosie's if Star didn't talk about her surgery.
Did Rosie come out of the closet as a lesbian right away? NO because that is something very personal and she came "out" when she was ready. Star should have the same right. The surgery was something very personal and I'm sure Star would have made it known in her own time.

As for Barbara Walters... shame on her.
The should have fired Joy's pesimistic, negative ass.
Star said it herself by saying " I don't know what the future holds but I do know WHO holds it"

On Larry King Live Star said that when she confronted Barbara about hiring Rosie... Barbara told Star it was a buisness decision so suck it up.
Well Barbara, Star announcing her departure was her buisness decision so suck it up. Barbara has no right to be upset. Star does have a reason to be upset because you betrayed her.
  • Star was just another black person beat down in a white person's world boo hoo hoo, poor poor pitiful me. I’m Star I know what I'll do, I'll be obnoxious unruly with no couth and no dignity and show my ass on national T.V and make it all about me Hello everyone I'm Star Jones bling bling look at me. It sure would be nice to see some black folks subdued in the way they act now that would be original instead it's all about them and nothing else It's funny how any other race get's wronged Indian, White, Asian, Hispanic, etc... That’s O.K. but when one black gets wronged the whole world better frikin' stop and take notice cause if they don't the NAACP will make sure they do. You want the racism to stop get off your high horse and come down here with everyone else I'm an American Indian and the last time I checked I didn't have a slave and none of my ancestors did either and more of my people were oppressed for longer than the black race I don't hold any grudges so why should you be treated any better than anyone else Star Jones was just a person who got fired so what, she won't be the last
  • "Different women, with different points of view." I think the show used to open to Barb's voice saying somthing close to this quote. That's what the show used to be about. I've watched the view on occasions, and what I truly enjoyed was the different ways of thinking from these very different, well educated, and intelligent women. Lately the show has seemed to shift to "one point of view"; Barbara's.
I applaud Star for handling her departure the way she did. It was hypocritical of Ms Walters to suggest that Star give a reason other than what was true for her exit. I don't care about Star's weight loss, or her possibly gay husband, or any of her personal affairs. I cared only about her contribution to the show. I think it helped to maintain a balance and conveyed a good representation of middle America.
Star, hopefully, will go on to bigger and better things. I wish the rest of the cast much luck. I miss also Meridith. I thought she was just fantastic!
  • About a month or two before Star's departure from the View, I read an article from one of the infamous tabloid magazines that in considering Rosie O'Donell as a replacement for Meredith, one of Rosie's conditions for joining The View was for the removal of Star Jones. Rosie does not like Star. Barbara Walters was trying to work out the details for making this happen. And she did. The whole matter was contrived, but it backfired in Barbara's face because it wasn't done on her terms. Star did it on HER terms. Good for her.

One always questions the authenticity and credibility of some tabloid stories. However, after looking at the recent unfolding of events on The View, the article was right on the money. And with that being the case, it casts Barbara Walters in an unfavorable light - not Star.

  • I have been a View fan for many years. Once Merideth annouced she was leaving I was very disappointed and sad to see her leave believe me I will be watching her on The Today Show. I have always enjoyed listening to Merideth and her silly ways. Once Rosie was picked to be the replacement I was already thinking of not watching The View any longer. When Star was let go and the way it was handled I now know I will no longer be watching The View daily. I am not happy with the way Barbara, Bill and ABC handled Star. I do believe that after the years Star was on the show she was owed more then finding out the news the way she did. I sent Barbara an email explaining the way I felt and that I have been a fan for many years and I was not even acknowledged. I did believe that on the day Star made her annoucement Barbara was being sincere I now know that she is nothing more than "C" rated actress. I do believe that Rosie on The View will be the end of the show. I was a Rosie fan for many many years. I feel that once Rosie's show was cancelled we got to see the really Rosie and it is not a pretty site. Believe me this has nothing to do with her sexual preference it has to do with the fact that she feels she has the right to say anything about anyone she wants. Who gave Rosie permission to comment on things that have nothing to do with her. A good example being Star's weight loss. Is Rosie jealous that she was unable to loss the weight that Star was able to loss? However Star chose to loss the weight really is no ones business but Star's. Believe me over the years that I have been watching The View Star has gotten on my nerves just like any of the other women have but that was the great thing about the show you may not always agree with all on the show but usually there is one view that you may agree with. Also since Barbara started to chair the show it has seemed very fake. It doesn't seem that the show is as much fun to watch and it doesn't seem that the women sitting at the table are not having fun anymore to me it seems that they are now only doing a job. And if Star happens to read this I believe you handled yourself with grace. And shame on you Barbara, Bill and ABC for treating a long standing employee the way you did.
  • Hoorah for Star!!!! Was never my favorite "View" personality, Debbie was, but when anyone one leaves on their own terms, well good for them. She stuck it to the big guys. As for "Grossy Rosie", good luck ABC and Babs, you guys are making a BIGGGGGGG mistake! "Grossy Rosie" is offensive and gives all the homosexuals a bad name. She's repulsive and makes me want to puke. I will never watch that show again if they let her presence air. Anyways I have lost a 100 pounds in twelve months with execise and diet. Got to be very focused and determined. So it can happen!!. Anyways, Way to go STAR!!!
  • The furor regarding Star Jones Reynolds' lack of disclosure regarding her "weight loss" is extremely disturbing. As a physician, I would like to explain to some obviously ill-informed individuals that, even after gastric bypass, regular exercise and toning are essential to achieving the type of results ( approximately 45-50% non lean-body mass loss, visible muscle tone) that she attained. Furthermore, her allusions to "portion control" were indeed accurate, as individuals who continue to consume large amounts of food repeatedly after gastric bypass can become quite ill. Furthermore, numerous case studies demonstrate, and in act, many individuals that I have encountered in my career prove, that it is easily possible to undergo this surgery and not acheive weight loss beyond 20-40 pounds. Even more importantly, it would have been irresponsible for her to publically promote a surgery that-though often beneficial- still carries a significant risk level of morbidity and mortality. The decisions regarding behavioral, medical, and surgical interventions for weight managment are best made by an individual and his or her physicans, and should not be influenced or promoted by a public figurewho has no training in the medical field.
  • There are some really cruel people writing on this site. What good will name calling and rudeness do? Nothing. Star was not my favorite lady on The View. My favorite lady left for bigger and better things. However, Star is by far a much better person than Rosie. Rosie's crass behaivor and in your face attitude is not an example to young ladies. Barbara should be able to see that. What Rosie does in the bedroom is her business, but I certainly don't want to listen to it on daytime t.v. She brings nothing to the table that would interest true ladies.
As far as Star not wanting to interview witches or pagans.... I don't blame her. She took a stand for those of us who still believe in being an example. Star is a Christian. Christians should not be discussing what witches believe in on or off the air. I personally admire her for the stand she took. Rosie would have been in the middle of the witches laughing about which broom she rode into work that morning!!!
Good for you Star!! Stand up for what you believe in...... GOD!
  • I Really enjoy watching the view, I think that Barbara Walters and the network made a great decision
in removing Star off of the show. I found that she was very much fake and she wanted it to be pretty much all about her half of the time. I think that she is is not an asset to the show. Star had her spotlight during the OJ trial and eventually the light bulb burnt out. So Star you have disapointed your little fans that you did have and now The View can continue on like it has been without you. To the remaing women of the view , you women are all a pleasure to watch . YOU ROCK!!!!!!
  • The VIEW is old and tired any way. But Star I believe was fired because of her prima-donna Diva attitude. I lost any respect I had for her when she staged that huge over-the-top wedding and acted like she was the first person to get married on the face of the Earth. And then the whole weight thing: I agree with Rosie. Own your weight loss but do it honestly. I am a large woman, too, and there is no way that Star could have lost that weight, and so quickly, by Pilates and diet. Not unless she had incredible will power, stamina, and a personal trainer. If it was so easy to lose the weight on her own, she would have done it a long time ago. Besides, anyone will tell you that Pilates does not create weight loss--just toning and stretching. Aerobic activity and eating less are the secrets to weight loss. But it is one of the hardest things to do, even if you know the solution.

I thought Meredith was a straight shooter, funny, bright and authentic. Joy adds natural dash. Elizabeth is cute but doesn't "bring much to the table" (I used to enjoy the days of Debbie Ditziopolis as my dad and I used to call her). Barbara is a tired old hag and likely a control freak. I don't think the whole Star thing was handled well at all--they should have just let her go honestly. But Star DOES owe Barbara a huge amount of respect for getting her in this business in the first place. She was plucked from Court-TV and talking about OJ for chrissakes. Barbara was also her BOSS for nine years. She's gone from being a heavy-set lawyer with relative perspective to a celebrity diva who is too big for her Payless shoes!

I watched the rerun today of the Meryl Streep DEVIL WEARS PRADA episode. I don't normally watch the VIEW any more but because of all the upheaval I've actually been T-voing certain episodes. Anyway, I don't know when it originally aired but Star seemed very dour and pinched and hardly smiling. She also made a few references to "Oh, she's boss alright..." when they were having a female-male boss discussion and Joy referred to Barbara as "wearing two hats". It was interesting. She already looked checked out.

Like Kathi Lee Gifford, who used to have some degree of charm until it went to her head and she just wouldn't shut up about the kids, Frank, her religion, and yadda, yadda, yadda, Star Jones jumped the shark a long time ago.

They ought to have a reality show: WHEN STAR(S) GET TOO BIG FOR THEIR BRITCHES.
  • To the IRATE writer "See-ya Star" wow, get a life!!! I just looked up this site to see what happened that started such a stir and I see your comment. What has Star done to you to make you so upset? You probably dont even know her personally. Cool down, it's not your fight!! By your comments on this site, it seems like you may be the one with those feelings you try to put off on Star. Oh well, after reading "See-ya Star"'s comment, I'm on Star's side. I don't particular like Star on the show, and never did, but she didn't do anything wrong. She stood up for her self Continuosly on the show. That's what the View was all about....different Views! Duh!!! If she didn't approve of athiesm, gays, or she was very religious--- so what--- You have your own beliefs also. Don't hate because she has the guts to stand up and speak out on what she believes. And she never did it like you did in your comment "See-ya Star". So yet again, you just made her look better!.. But still I wont be watching the view, it's been going downhill for a long time.
  • The view is definitely going downhill. One of the reasons I liked to watch was the balance of left and right view....that will not be the case any longer...Barbara is running this show and her views are all that matter. I like that Star was honest, and it isn't our business of surgery or no surgery if she doesn't want to disclose it! So she kept that view to herself, sue her? People need to get a life and realize this is a 'show' and 'entertainment'.. so make your choice to watch or not.... we live in a free country. The bashing of Star is pretty sad! Let her go and God go with her. She honors him with her views and I enjoyed watching her and Elizabeth balance out the left views. Too bad, probably won't see that anymore with Rosie on...
  • As much as I cannot stomach Star Jones I applaud the way she called Barbara Walters for she is - a two-faced, unprofessional, hypocrite. Walters ought to retire. Her shrill and annoying presence anywhere on television is enough to make one puke. Hazzelbeck is a moron and Behar is a cackling loudmouth. And Rosie O'Donnell? Puhleeeeese! " The View " has had its day - good-bye to television at its worst - a shrill talkfest where everyone at that table appears to be jockeying for position and power.
  • Thats what we will all be saying in a few short weeks... Star WHO???

I'm glad to see her gone. She really WAS annoyingly conceited and unprofessional.
And yes, she was also quite intolerant when it came to people of alternate lifestyles
or other religious beliefs (other than hers, that is).

Some of you have asked what's the big deal if she wanted to keep
    her stomach surgery private?

Well the 'big deal' is.... she probably got PAID to mislead the viewing audience
by claiming "Pilates" and dieting did it all for her.
Wanna bet the Pilates folks paid her for that "innocently spontaneous" endorsement
she made on air and in her book??

Save your money, you KNOW she'd go for the cash payoff in a heartbeat.
You KNOW she's all about endorsements and money mongering for all she's worth!
And soon enough, to my delight and the delight of COUNTLESS others--
Star's not going to be worth *squat!*

ByeBye Star, glad to see you go. Your frenzied, poor poor me
pity-party exit just proves who and what you are for real; pathetic.

  • Barbara needs to retire. How can you believe anything she says! The View is dead. This is a feable attempt to save the show but it also shows that people will put on a mask and pretend to be something they are not - i.e. Barbara Walters. As a gay man, Rosie annoys the hell out of me. She is ultra extreme and I am sure that will not sit well with the middle america audience The View has. A mother in Nebraska will not relate to a loud partnered lesbian in New York.

Show Cancelled. Barbara should retire to the Hamptons. ABC = third place behind CBS and NBC with Desperate Housewives failing in the ratings.
  • Some of you people need to get a grip. Seeya Star get a life!
  • So Star you told Al rocker that you had to come on NBC and TELL THE TRUTH--so when did you get that epiphany??----the TRUTH?--HOW ABOUT" dieting and Pilates"--Is that the trruth too??? You cannot be cleared until you REALLY tell the truth about your life, and don't say its "PRIVATE" because we all know you lost that right when you sold your soul for your wedding and when you decided to go on all the talk shows and interview with PEOPLE NBC and CNN and share your personal life witht he public...... c'mon Star we are all not that foolish---think about it------ the TRUTH........... (Maybe it was not just a gastric bypass but a soul bypass too)
  • I heard that another reason that Star got fired was because Barbara is the executive producer of the show. and that in the begining it supposed to be her show where she was the one with the spotlight, but in recent years star has started to eclipse her and Barbara didn't like having someone have more popularity that she did, so as executive producer she had Jones fired, and veiled the release as a result of shrinking popularity and loss of credibility
  • Remember when Deborah Norville tried to push Jane Pauley out of her job! ABC might want to look back at that Titanic disaster as an example of what not to do! Rosie O'Donnell is pushing Star Jones out of her job, and from all the blogs that I have read, viewers and the public in general do not like it. Also, I think that Star handled leaving the show in a perfectly classy manner! ABC must have missed the interview that Rosie did with Tom Selleck...

    WHAT SIDE IS AMERICA ON...

    STAR JONES 1,000,000,000 ROSIE O'DONNELL 123

Stay strong Star! America is on your side!
  • I totally agree that Star did the right thing, and Barbara Walters has totally lost credibility. I've never been inspired to write to a celebrity before, but I did send an e-mail to Barbara Walters' View mailbag. I am appalled how they wanted to make it seem like Star was leaving because of her personality clash with Rosie. They had already told Star that her contract would not be renewed, and then they additionally slapped her in the face by hiring Rosie (who had been her recent harsh public critic- and who Star had previously thought of as a friend!) Barbara has plenty of clout with the show, and there is no way Star would have been let go if Barbara insisted that she be allowed to stay! Barbara Walters has exhibited such hipocrisy with claims of support and 'holding people in her heart', while simultaneously back stabbing them, and while trying with all her might (laughably)to play the victim! And I had been one of her admirers! Star has shown honesty and integrity. She has never claimed any of the things about her weight loss that people here are accusing her of. She only stated that it was personal and she didn't want to discuss it publicly. I think people should actually listen to Star's side before judging her and running around w/ untrue claims about her.
  • Starr Jones is as popular as Barbara, but what I've seen and heard she is more honest than she is.No matter how you say it.Starr was fired, when you are told that you won't be back for next season you've been fired ladies and gentlemen. It was Starr's right to go out the way she saw fit.I think everyone is upset that she didnot leave with her head down low and begging for another chance.Barbara says she feels betrayed by Starr, but you betrayed yourself as something who couldnot tell your co-host the truth in her face and you cry betrayal and deceit when the truth is told.It is not Rosie's business or mine how she lost weight or why she did it.
  • Good Riddance Star Loser-Jones....
You are a RACIST, a BIGOT, and a narrow-minded, intolerant RELIGIOUS FANATIC.
I'm am soooooo glad to see you go!

I will never forget your UNprofessionalism, your UNgraceful presence, your intolerant eye rolling and Elvis-like-sneer you shot at people who are/were different from you.
I will never forget the shows where you'd pout and refuse to sit on the couch when
people you "didn't approve of" [like Pagans and Wiccans or anyone of an alternate world
view or lifestyle] were being interviewed...
How you would insist on sitting away from them, as if they were "dirty" or smelled bad or
something, or worse yet - refuse to come out of your dressing room until their interview
segment was over. You religious BIGOT.

IF IT WASN'T FOR YOU BEING PICKED AS A 'LEGAL TALKING HEAD' FOR THE O.J. TRIAL OH-SO-MANY-YEARS-AGO, YOU'D NEVER EVEN WOULD HAVE HAD A CHANCE AT BEING IN THE 'ENTERTAINMENT FIELD!' You were FAT, UGLY, PLAIN and barely intelligible, and I have no idea who you blew to get on TV back then.
And even now, with your Prada shoes and designer clothes, TONS of make-up and shameless self-hype and promotion you are STILL ugly. Because your kind of ugly comes from the inside.

SEE YA ... WOULDN"T WANNA BE YA! (and I mean that sincerely!)

  • I truly hope this show is gone before the end of the year -- and with Rosie joining the group it is a VERY GREAT possibility. Star handled herself in a very graceful way, and that is more than I can say for dear little Barb. Barbara again got what she wanted but that does NOT mean it is what the public wants. Rosie is not only a bad role model for our children, she is a loud mouthed know-it-all that I refuse to watch or listen to. Sorry Barb, but you REALLY screwed up this time ---------- and The View should just pack up and leave....................which I expect in the VERY near future.

    Jimmie
  • If BW had wanated to keep Star on the show, there is no doubt in my mind that SHE COULD HAVE! I wasn't a fan of Star (until NOW!!). I often wondered why BW didn't talk to Star about "going overboard" in terms of the wedding, or the thinly veiled "doctor's intervention" in terms of the weight loss. Isn't it a boss' responsibility to talk to an employee before saying "you're fired"? I think the big news here is until now, nobody has ever fought back with BW. The headlines should read: BARBARA WALTERS MEETS HER MATCH....AND MORE!!!!

I give this show one season with the nasty Rosie O.
  • Go ahead, Miss Star! I just watched you on the Today Show. Good Job!

God Speed to you and family.
