Super Bowl Halftime Review: Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers Deliver
In the past few years, the Super Bowl halftime show has basically been just a mini-concert that will most likely cater to people who are already big fans of the performer. Last year we had Prince. This year it’s Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
The fans flooded the field and gathered around the stage as Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers performed “American Girl” followed by “Free Fallin’,” “I Won’t Back Down,” and “Runnin’ Down a Dream.” I’ve never considered myself a huge fan of Tom Petty but even I knew most of the words to the songs they performed. Apparently so did the crowd because you could hear them singing along.
To Petty’s credit, the man can still put on a good show despite his age. Whenever an older rock star tries to make a comeback, there’s always that concern that they wont be able to live up to their own music anymore. Such was not the case with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Sure there wasn’t anything exceptionally amazing about the performance – at least not from where I was sitting (music like that is always better live) but they got the job done and that’s what counts.
