Ever since I first heard about Dollhouse, I’ve been trying to figure out exactly what it’s about. Of course, I’ve read the synopses, but I still couldn’t quite get the details. I pictured something like a more hardcore Alias, in which a bunch of hot spies try to save the world but without all of those pesky feelings and memories getting in the way. Luckily, thanks to The Hollywood Reporter, I’ve found out that I’m pretty much dead wrong…I think.
THR has released two clips from Dollhouse. One is an extended promo that helps explain the plot of the show, while the other one is a scene from the pilot. Check them out below:
Okay, so Eliza Dushku is playing a high-class…prostitute? She obviously knows her way around a gun, based on the first clip, but Adelle seems to be renting out Echo (as well as other Actives, I’m assuming) to lonely men for wedding dates. When will she have time to save the world? After the first dance but before cutting the cake? The clip says that the Actives volunteer themselves for this, so I’ve got to believe that there’s a whole lot more to this.
Despite my embarrassing inability to understand what I’m sure is a relatively straightforward show, I’m looking forward to Dollhouse. I wasn’t a fan of Buffy or Angel (sacrilege, I know) but I respect Joss Whedon and Dollhouse seems like the type of series that’s a little more up my alley. After all, I’m already excited about finding out exactly what the deal is with her sister, so that’s a good sign.

Not entirely sure what you're missing after having read the synopsis and watching the trailer, but...... she's not playing a prostitute, not technically. As you stated from what the trailer said, people volunteer to allow to have their minds wiped simply to make a big paycheck. Little do they know what they are being used for. I mean, if these people, now Actives, knew they were going to be assassins if needed, I don't think they would have signed up for it. Not most of them anyway, some wouldn't care as long as they earning a pretty penny. The guy who was talking to Olivia's character (Adelle), basically wanted to make his wife jealous, which will be one of the first things we see Eliza do as Echo in this series. So, Eliza is simply a wedding date. The guy obviously has money and wanted this to be convincing - heard about the Dollhouse and figured he could cash in some to make his ex's wedding day not so much a day to remember. (Great guy - I can't imagine why she left him!)
So, yes, basically these 'volunteers' are mind-wiped, then installed with memories and abilities to do the job asked of the company, and then mind-wiped again to not remember one bit of it.
And this show is definitely not about saving the world. The one thing we know about this show that wasn't explained in the trailer is that Echo is going to start remembering bits and pieces of either her old life or her past missions - which is not good for the company considering what she has been doing. Oh, and these volunteers only sign up for 5 years of this work. But with Echo remembering things and telling others, you can bet they won't let her go because that would be a breach of their operation. And this is what will keep the show going beyond their required years at the Dollhouse - if the show lasts that long. Though, who knows, Echo could be in her final year of service, or one of her 'friends' could and she shares information with them. So, sure, in a way it'll be like Alias in that Echo is gonna try to reveal what is going on and attempt to get the place shut down.
The story about her sister however - I'm not too certain if that is the person behind Echo, her true self, or if it's her imprint of the day. All we know is that Paul has her picture, he may not have any information on her real human-self because I'm assuming the Actives get put into a similar kind of 'protection program' like the CIA does, because it'd be too easy to reveal the Dollhouse operation if they didn't. Who knows though! We know so very little about this show right now.
I'm just so happy Joss is back at work in television though. I miss his storytelling. :)
Gina: Okay, I get what you're saying, but why would they volunteer to do this just for a big paycheck? As I understand it, all of their memories and experiences are wiped after each job, not just the memory of the job itself. So what good would a big paycheck do when you can only enjoy the rewards for a few days between jobs? There has to be more to it than that.
