TV Recap: American Idol - The Final Three (UPDATED)

I don’t think I’m alone when I say that I thought Jason Castro’s performances last night were a mess. Don’t get me wrong, the guy’s adorable and I can see him putting out a mellow album that plenty of people will love. I just don’t think the big stage is for him and after last night, I’m hoping the Idol viewers were merciful by opting not to vote for him. Seriously, I get why the girls are smitten by Castro and I haven’t forgotten his fantastic rendition of “Hallelujah.” I just think he’d be better suited for smaller venues. As for the other contestants, I agreed with Simon and Paula regarding Syesha’s performances. I thought she was great (especially with the second song). Plus, not to sound like Paula but she really looked fantastic in that gold/orange-ish dress. The Davids both did well and while I much prefer Cook to Archuleta, I thought David A. did fantastic last night. Cook was good as always but he didn’t really wow me with either of his performances. But enough about last night. Tonight it’s all about which three contestants are moving on and which one is being cut loose. Plus Bo Bice (remember him?) is performing! Ryan reminds us that whichever contestants make the final three will also get to make the infamous journey home to visit their hometowns. Then we get to see footage of the fab-four on their trip to Vegas to see/promote the Cirque Du Soleil Beatles LOVE show. Before the call-in questions, Ryan reminds us that we’ll soon be able to lick Taylor Hick’s stamp. Nice. Then some lady calls in and totally puts David Cook on the spot by asking him out on a date. He manages to field the question without rejecting or accepting her proposal. Another caller asks Simon why he hasn’t been knighted by the Queen. Simon wonders this himself and throws in, “Your majesty, if you’re’ watching – I’m available.” Another caller asks Syesha how she feels being the last girl in the competition. Syesha laughs and says the last (censored out) they did was uncomfortable for her and that the three guys are funny. Does anyone have any idea what she said or why they cut the audio? Was it the Ford commercial she was talking about? Moving on, Maroon Five performs. Sorry, I’m just not into these guys. Afterwards, Ryan fills in some extra time by chatting about the single and the tour. The Maroon Five guy offers the final four contestants some candid and surprisingly honest advice about getting famous (and getting jaded). Bo Bice finally takes the stage and rocks out on the guitar while he sings about needing a witness. Once again, Paula’s on her feet, dancing up a storm. At one point, Bice does a solo on his guitar and he’s moving his mouth to the tune so it looks like he’s singing guitar noises. Or maybe I’m just tired but that’s how it looked to me. And during all of this, Ryan was telling each of the contestants their fate. Here’s how the results went down tonight: David Archuleta – TOP 3 David Cook – TOP 3 Syesha Mercado – Top 3 Jason Castro – ELIMINATED Well, I can’t say I’m surprised or even all that disappointed. Castro has a great voice but maybe he just wasn’t ready for the big show just yet. I doubt we’ve heard the last from him though. He certainly has the talent (and the fans) to get an album made.
