TV Recap: So You Think You Can Dance - The Top 6 PerformAuthor: Steve West

We’re down to the final six, and yet we still have a two hour show. Recapping this show has made me realize that I never get a reprieve. Each week there are still 8-10 routines to go over, and then the solos push it up beyond even what we had during the Top 20 week. It’s kind of ridiculous.
As usual I’m not going to go into the solo routines, but I do have to say a few things about what Brandon did. First of all, it was an incredible solo. It actually did remind me a bit of his audition piece way back when, only much improved. And uh…was the outfit fan pandering or am I just being a prick? No, I’m pretty sure it was and that it doesn’t matter because tonight Brandon proved that he deserves to win the competition. Sorry Jeanine, I think you’re great, but there’s just no stopping Brandon. Plus this season hasn’t had any standout stars, as my wife has said for weeks and Nigel talked about at the top of the show. Boys Group Number - Choreography by Sonya Tayeh: Sonya’s comments about the Willy Wonka-esque quality was a bit confusing because the routine reminded me of anything but. This was a tremendous routine, full of power. When Ade and Evan threw Brandon across the stage I was worried that he’d get hurt. Girls Group Number - Choreography by Sonya Tayeh: I think the choreography here was actually superior to what Sonya did with the guys, but the dancing was nowhere close. The synchronicity was off, especially at the beginning, and there wasn’t a lot of the power I had hoped for. And I have to say that while I appreciate a beautiful woman’s breasts as much as the next guy, it was a bit tacky of Nigel to make reference to Jeannine’s “talent” not being able to be tied down. She took it in stride, but it was evident that she was a bit uncomfortable for a moment there. Jeanine and Ade - Choreography by Louis Van Amstel: Ade’s done. Those samba rolls, or whatever Mary called them, were absolutely atrocious. Not just bad, but high school Homecoming dance horrific. As for Jeanine she was incredibly sexy, which is what Louis wanted from them both. I did notice on a few occasions she made some weird faces, but that was only when I wasn’t busy watching her hips work their sexy magic. Choreography by Tabitha and Napoleon: I’m not sure why the judges are so quick to praise Ade in this routine. Lil’ C talks about him getting down and into his dirty groove, which he then used to pull Jeanine down there with him. Hell, Jeanine was there from the first beat. Tabitha and Napoleon have yet to put together a memorable piece this season, and this is no exception. It was fun, danced well, but the boxes were more a distraction than anything. Melissa and Evan - Choreography by Tyce Diorio: Lil’ C must have a strange personal dislike for Evan, because that’s the only way I can justify his comments. Who would have thought that even in his own style Evan could ever outshine Melissa? Not just outshine her, but with his excellence make her even better in an unfamiliar place. This was the best choreographed and performed Broadway routine of the season. Choreography by Louis Van Amstel: Weeks we’ve gone without a quick step, and now that we’re in the semi-finals they bring it back. Why? Get rid of this style on the show. Even if danced perfect, no one at home wants to watch this dreaded dance. This merely approached dreadful, but came close enough for me to really feel bad for Melissa who could end up going home tomorrow. Kayla and Brandon - Choreography by Stacey Tookey: Kayla is so blah, bland, and banal. My god she is a great dancer, but I just don’t care about her. Stacey said she would hold nothing back at this stage in the competition, and she was right. Perhaps not as memorable as some previous contemporary routines, this thing was full of perfection by Brandon. His jumps were explosive, and how come no one talked about Brandon’s ridiculous lines like they always do with Kayla? Brandon put Kayla to shame, and she was excellent here as well. Choreography by Doriana Sanchez:: Disco is kooky, cheesy, and fun. I also don’t like it. And then Doriana decides to throw out the most insane thing I’ve seen all night. Even if you join me in the corner with contempt for disco you have to admit that this was excellent. And I’m sadly convinced Kayla will be sticking around for the finale, while Melissa heads home. |
