TV Recap: So You Think You Can Dance - Top 16 Results Tonight’s results episode of So You Think You Can Dance was all over the map in terms of the mood. I suppose this is usually the case with elimination episodes but tonight’s results show was particularly emotional as Nigel took a moment out to honor Michael Jackson, who died suddenly today of cardiac arrest.

Before we get to that sad portion of the episode, tonight’s results show opened with a saucy Latin group performance that started out hot and got even hotter when some of the girls danced and splashed around in puddles of water. Dimitry Chaplin, Tabitha and Napoleon get the credit for choreographing that sexy number. Following this, Nigel took a moment to mention the deaths of Farrah Fawcett, Ed McMahon and Michael Jackson. He paid Jackson extra attention as the King of Pop was known not only for his music but also for his cutting edge dance moves. Nigel was right to say that Michael Jackson’s music videos were highly anticipated. I remember waiting for the premiere of the “Black or White” video and anyone who was around back in ‘80’s would be able to recognize the “Thriller” dance if they saw it. The moonwalk. The spin and crotch-grab move. After discussing the deaths, the show appropriately cut to a clip of the legendary “Thriller” video.

After the break the results started trickling in for some of the couples and there were also treated to a fantastic performance by dancers the Rage Boys, who from what I could tell were all kids… very talented kids, some of whom probably stand a good chance of making it onto this show once they’re old enough. The Veronica’s came on later to perform their popular single “Take Me on the Floor.” And that covers the filler. Now on to the results. Below are the bottom three couples:

Vitolio Jeune and Asuka Kondoh
Jonathan Platero and Karla Garcia
Caitlin Kinney and Jason Glover

Nigel said he’d be willing to bet that Jonathan Platero and Karla Garcia would be in the bottom three and he was right. Caitlin and Jason’s showy Paso Doble seemed a little weak in terms of the emotional connection and though there were a few good moments, I’m not surprised that they didn’t win enough viewers over to secure their safety. As for Vitolio and Asuka, I would’ve thought their adorable weepy moment together in the pre-performance video package would have helped them with the voters but I guess it just wasn’t enough.

All of the dancers “danced for their lives,” and while I think the judges might have already been decided as far as the guys went, it the competition was tighter for the girls. Caitlin’s performance stood out most among the three girls and that didn’t go unnoticed by the judges. Nigel said the judges thought Caitlin’s solo was the best tonight. He said Karla was “desperate tonight.” Nigel said Asuka is beautiful and exciting but they feel as though she’s not growing in the competition. He broke the news to Asuka that she would be going home tonight.

As for the guys, Nigel said Vitolio doesn’t always deliver the promise he shows, Jonathan doesn’t bring the dancing that’s required to be America’s best dancer and Jason’s performance was desperate and strong enough to get him through… had he been up against better boys. But fortunately for Jason, he wasn’t up against better guys because he was safe. That left Vitolio and Jonathan and honestly, I would’ve been surprised if Vitolio was cut. He shows a lot of potential whereas Jonathan’s only real strength (at least, compared to the competition) is his tumbling abilities. That’s not enough to keep him around as he was eliminated (though the judges weren’t unanimous on this). That means Vitolio’s safe but Nigel told him he needs to bring it next week if he wants to stick around.

With Jonathan and Asuka gone, this leaves Vitolio and Karla to be teamed up next week. Will their new partnership help them win over the viewers? Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
