It’s been two weeks since I’ve been able to watch Top Chef -- I was in Sundance for the last two episodes – and I come back to three of the strongest players hitting the bottom. Pile on top of that one of the weaker cheftestants, in my opinion, coming out on top in the Elimination Challenge. It was a topsy turvy world for this returning Top Chef fan.
Scott Conant was this week’s guest judge, and now more than ever I’m sad to not have been able to attend the Bon Appetit dinner as he was the guest chef. I’ve been looking forward to eating his food for a little while now, and my inability to get to NYC to try out Scarpetta puts a damper on that desire. In any case, let’s get to the Product Placement Quickfire challenge.
This week the cheftestants had to cook with Quaker Oats of some sort to come up with a dish based on a food group they chose. Thematically Top Chef went all out Super Bowl this week, with the cheftestants picking their food group via a classic football betting chart. I have to say that I was uninspired by the majority of what was put out there, even Stefan’s dish which won. I’m not sure how well Jamie used the oats, but her shrimp with an avocado crème fraiche sounds insanely delicious. This Sunday I wouldn’t be surprised to find that on my plate as I fast forward to the commercials.
The Elimination Challenge saw the return of some past favorite cheftestants. The season five crew was tasked with a one-on-one battle with Top Chef All Stars based on the regional cuisine of different NFL teams. One of the interesting things was Stefan’s cocky picking of Andrea from season one because she was only on the show a short time. He really thought she’d be a pushover. Not that the All Stars had much to brag about as one by one they were decimated by the new kids.
In the end it turned out the Jeff, Fabio, and Stefan were the losing members of the team. It was just bad all around for these three this week, and I was surprised to watch as one of the people I thought would make it to the top four get eliminated. Jeff’s rock shrimp ceviche with sangria sorbet just didn’t cut it with any of the judges, and despite some ill-advised fighting with chef Conant by Fabio, it was Jeff who was sent home.
As for the winners I said right before Scott Conant announced the winner that it would be Hosea or Jaimie. He surprised me by announcing crazy Carla, who won two tickets to the Super Bowl. I guess you never know what can happen from week to week on Top Chef, but I’m going to try and stay on top of the show now that I’m home. I can’t come back to the world being crazy again. What’s next, Leah and Hosea start making out…?
