TV Review: Jericho's CBS Debut

By Josh Tyler: 2006-09-20 00:00:00
TV Review: Jericho's CBS Debut If 'Jericho' isn't the most anticipated new series of the year, it isn't from lack of trying by CBS. It's certainly the most heavily advertised.

Tonight, CBS's post-apocalyptic 'Lost' knockoff debuted and managed to make it through it's first hour of television without falling flat on its ass. Maybe anything more than that was too much to ask, post-apocalyptic drama is so rarely done right.

The show tells the story of a small, isolated Kansas town called Jericho in a near future where the whole world gets wiped out (or is it?). Tonight's premiere told the story of the town's first seventeen hours after its residents spot a mushroom cloud roaring into the sky from the direction of Denver, the nearest major metropolis. Television, radio, telephone, and eventually just about everything else goes out. Soon they're all in the dark, both figuratively and literally. What happened? Was it an accident? An attack? Is there anything else left?

'Jericho' is poured in the mold of 'Lost' not just in the sense that it's about a small group of isolated disaster survivors, but in that it's a series all about finding answers. We don't know what's happened to the world, and I suspect it'll be at least a full season before we find out. The show's in no hurry, and instead spends it's premiere focused on two or three characters as they survive car wrecks or manage different crises.

Skeet Ulrich's Jake Green is one of those characters. He's the star and so this first episode follows him as he survives a car wreck, stumbles on a bus full of injured school children, and then drives them all home. Actually, the show's choice to focus on Ulrich's misadventures for it's debut is my main criticism. I can see half-baked slackers survive traffic accidents on any show. As a way to hook an audiences attention, it seems like something of a waste. There's an apocalypse going on here, why are we watching Jake play med-tech to a group of kids?

The bigger story of how the town as a whole is handling this disaster seems to take something of a back seat to the much less interesting story of Jake and his busload of kids. Maybe further into the show, four or five episodes in would be the place for this. But right now, in the middle of 'Jericho's" debut, it might be a good time for something more spectacular if CBS wants viewers coming back. I mean, 'Lost' gave us a massive plane crash and a gigantic, invisible, tree-eating monster. All 'Jericho' can manage is a distant mushroom cloud, bad cell phone reception, and a guy in need of a tow truck.

Ultimately though, I think there's potential. Ulrich doesn't bring much to the table but Gerald McRaney is a calming, comfortable presence as the town's mayor. Other more minor characters leave enough of an impression too, enough to keep me coming back at least another week to see if they can keep the town from rioting. And of course there's all those pesky questions. Tonight we learned that at least Denver and Atlanta have been nuked, what about everywhere else? Who did it? Or what about that empty prison bus we saw outside of town? Will the town stock up on firearms and turn into an armed bunker run by crazed survivalists? Let's hope so, or 'Jericho' may be going nowhere fast.

Meh, the show was alright. The acting, dialogue and the characters kinda lowered it a bit...

  1. Michael Says:

2nd episode was much better than the first (which was not bad at all) and much better than the overhyped "Heros".

3rd episode where they send out teams to explore the surrounding towns and find some answers looks even more intriging.

  1. Jonathan Says:

It is a great show and it's way better then lost.

  1. JP Says:

The show is moving way to slow on things that do not keep you interested. I do not a year to find out why the nukes dropped or set off. Is this a terrorist act or act of war. My guess is China or North Korea nuked us.

  1. Pastor Thomas G Says:

I find this to be one of the most compelling dramas of the season. As some reviewers have noted, there are similarities between this show and the plot of Pat Frank's classic novel "Alas Babylon" (1959). I care more about good story lines and thoughtful concepts than about action scenes. I would like to see more background unfold as to what actually "happened" since it is actually unlikely that China (with whom we are perhaps the largest trading partner) would attack the U.S. and certainly not countries which make up the old Soviet Union.

North Korea, by the way, at present does not have Nukes, but (as of today), the U.S. is complaining that we will not "allow" a North Korea with nuclear weaspons and that the country can choose to have a "future and survive" or face the consequences. North Korea had just announced it's plans to conduct a nuclear test.

I think this show is awesome. I had to miss the 3rd episode and was very upset about it. I don't even know what happened now!!! Arghhhh!!! I can't wait for the next episode. BTW: Anyone who saw the 3rd episode; can you please tell me what happened. Email me at pissedoffaboutmyaccount@yahoo.com

  1. Sid Says:

At first I though this was going to be a "24" type of show where each episode was going to be a different day in the life of the town after a nuke attack. I am very selective about what I view and this one is a show I will not miss. Who needs "reality" shows!

  1. Survivalist Says:

I agree excellent show. Other Message Boards have generally slammed this show as mediocre. I think it is great and very interesting as I am very interested in survivialist scenarios after 9/11 and Katrina (armed thugs going around). I started training in Martial Arts as a result of such events.

  1. orwellnow Says:

The show is unfolding a little slowly for my tastes, and a number of the medical incidents are ridiculously unrealistic or grossly inacurate (I'm a former medic). Also, the very idea that there wouldn't be mass panic and chaos strikes me as silly. All the food and gas would be horded. There might not be a single refinery left operating in North America. How the heck is anyone going to feed themselves a month from now? Nobody would calmly be buying things from the store. Money would be worthless. Everyone is acting as though this is something that will blow over in few months when it is a permanent catastrophe. All that being said, I'm hooked for the moment. The premise is fascinating and I hope the writers can make it work.

  1. Jeff Says:

The very FIRST question that came to my mind after the phones and TV stopped working was "why hasn't anyone tried the internet?".

I mean... after all, the internet was originally intended as a communications backbone in the event of a nuclear attack. Is there not one single person in the town with some sort of hard wired or even satelite based internet?

Somehow that sketchy "St. Loius" ex-cop is able to get out on his laptop.

  1. Leslie Says:

Boring. Slow. Trite and cliche' characters. The writers and research team needs major overhaul. Better yet, just cancel it and put in a replacement program.

  1. Gertrude Says:

The concept has so much potential, and I love apocalypse fiction... but Jericho disappoints. Every time that soundtrack kicks in I think I'm watching Dawson's Creek. I wish they'd scrap the whole "teenage freak angst" subplot.

Too much "fiction" and not enough "Apocalypse" IMHO.
