It’s official – The CW has cancelled ‘Gilmore Girls.’ After seven seasons of the hit series, which originally aired on The WB network, the dramatic adventures of Rory and Lorelei have come to an end. Rumors and speculation about the cancellation of the show have been floating around for some time now and it was really only a matter of time before the final decision was officially announced by the network.

TV.com reported last year that both Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel were considering leaving the show to pursue their film careers. Bledel told TV.com, "The fact is, our legal contracts our up, so you begin to imagine, 'Well, what if?' in a different way than before." Today, LA Times reported that a source close to the show told them that the network and the studio were “unable to make a deal to keep the show alive.”

The following statement was made on The CW’s website yesterday afternoon:

“Announcing the final season of ‘Gilmore Girls’ is truly a sad moment for everyone at The CW and Warner Bros. Television. This series helped define a network and created a fantastic, storybook world featuring some of television’s most memorable, lovable characters.”

While ‘Gilmore Girls’ didn’t get the high ratings that some of the popular shows on the major networks earn each week, it was a big-ticket item for The CW and had a very loyal fan base. Replacing the series will be no easy task for the network. Meanwhile, the fate of CW’s ‘Veronica Mars’ still hangs in the balance and won’t be announced until the network’s Upfront later this month.

The series finale of ‘Gilmore Girls’ will air on May 15, 2007.
