What does a network do when they have a popular show and they want to figure out a way to milk it for all it’s worth? A spinoff, of course! Make a whole new show using one or two characters from the original series and double the pleasure (and ideally, double the ratings). That’s what The CW is trying to do with their popular drama series, Gossip Girl.
The Hollywood Reporter states that CW entertainment president Dawn Ostroff is trying to find a way to do a Gossip Girl spinoff. She’s apparently in talks with the GG producers to see if there’s something that could be worked out in the spinoff department, though nothing’s been finalized yet.
It’s understandable from a ratings perspective that the network might want expand the series, especially when they have a built-in fanbase but still, the fact that the idea appears to have been spawned from the network entertainment president rather than the writers of the show, it seems a bit forced. I’d rather be hearing that the producers and writers were the ones trying to get a spinoff made. At least then we’d know they probably had some kind of story in mind for the series. This news really does sound like the network’s just looking to profit from the show rather than to create a quality program. Who are we kidding though. This is the network that re-made 90210. Originality isn’t exactly something they’ve been celebrating lately. I suppose most GG fans won’t care where the idea started, as long as it means they’ll be getting twice as much drama each week if the show does end up getting made.
Am I still bitter over the cancellation of Veronica Mars (an original series that should never have been cancelled)?
