The Clicker Looks At The Bright Side

By Kelly West: 2007-11-11 14:46:07
The Clicker Looks At The Bright Side The strike. The strike. The strike. It’s all we’ve been hearing about lately and for good reason. In the TV world, what’s happening with the writers strike is a pretty big deal. While I don’t fault the writers for wanting better compensation, trying to keep track of how the strike is going to affect our shows has become pretty frustrating. The new season of Lost may only be eight episodes long. Heroes’ second season could wrap up before the end of this year. And Fox isn’t airing 24 at all.

In a nutshell, be prepared for all of your favorite shows to drop off the TV schedule one by one if the strike goes on for much longer. I’ve decided that rather than obsess over whether or not the WGA strike is going to completely wreck this TV season (and right now, it looks like its headed that way), I’m going to take advantage of the extra time I’ll to have by catching up on some TV shows I’ve been meaning to watch. For example, I’m about halfway through the second season of Arrested Development. I started watching it over the summer and was loving it but once the fall season started, I just didn’t have the time to keep up with it. It looks like pretty soon, I will! I also really want to watch Showtime’s Dexter and get caught up with that.

This strike doesn’t have to be all bad for us TV watchers. Have you been watching Battlestar Galactica? The fourth and final season is set to premiere on Scifi in April of 2008. That gives you months to get caught up and trust me, it’ll be time well spent! I recommend renting or downloading the BSG miniseries and starting with that. If you enjoy it, you can get going with the first three seasons. It’s really a fantastic series and not so scifi-ish that non-geeks couldn’t enjoy it. I cant stand Star Trek, personally but I’ve found BSG to be just as entertaining (and addicting) as the original Star Wars movies.

You might also consider renting/downloading the first season of Heroes or 30 Rock, or the previous seasons of How I Met Your Mother and The Office. If you’re already an Office fan, have you ever watched the original British version of the series? Its only 2 seasons long (plus a bonus Christmas special) and its absolutely hilarious.

See, so this whole strike thing might not be the worst thing in the world. Though I can’t help but see the irony in considering TV downloads and DVD as a good way to carry us through the strike. After all, DVD and online TV residuals are two of the biggest sticking points in the current strike. Part of me thinks we should show our appreciation for the hard work the writers do by boycotting TV DVDs and downloads until the writers get a better deal. But since the holiday season is upon us, its doubtful that such a boycott would ever be able to happen.

If you have any recommendations for TV shows that you think people should get caught up on while the strike is going on, feel free to post a comment below!
