The Clicker Thinks The CW Failed Veronica Mars

By Kelly West: 2007-05-20 00:01:49

The Clicker Thinks The CW Failed Veronica Mars I don’t do rants. Generally, I leave the tirades of frustration and disappointment to Mack, one of our columnists and the resident asshole here at TV Blend (titled with affection, of course). But I can’t help but express my extreme disappointment in The CW for canceling ‘Veronica Mars.’ Since the final season of the series will wind to a close this week, it looks as though I wont have many more chances to write about the show as a current part of our TV viewing pleasure. After next week, references to the series will go the way of ‘My So Called Life,’ ‘Freaks and Geeks,’ and all of the other great TV series that were cancelled before their time and now exist only in our memories (and on DVD).

I’m bitter that the show was cancelled but I’m going to put those emotions aside as much as possible here because my problem with The CW extends much further than them giving ‘Mars’ the boot prematurely. The CW failed ‘Veronica Mars’ long before they cancelled it. The bulk of the responsibility of putting out a solid TV series falls into the hands of the writers, directors, producers and actors. It’s the network’s job to get people to watch the show. If they don’t draw in the viewers, the ratings will suck and the show will get cancelled.

I have to wonder how many people started watching ‘Mars’ due to UPN and The CW’s promotions for the show. Was there something about the way the networks advertised it that drew viewers in or did they find ‘Mars’ some other way? Up until last spring, just after the second season finale aired, my impression of ‘Mars,’ having never seen an episode, was that it had something to do with a girl from space. That might sound ridiculous but because I rarely watched UPN and therefore, never saw an ad for the show, I based my opinion of the series on the title alone. To those of you who’ve never seen it, ‘Veronica Mars’ is about a girl who moonlights as a private detective. She’s not from space and has no super powers (other than her quick wit and a fantastic knack for being a smart-ass).

Word of mouth is what got me hooked on ‘Veronica Mars.’ A friend of mine, whose opinions on TV shows generally mirror my own, convinced me to watch and after viewing the pilot episode, I was immediately on board. I got caught up on the first two seasons over the summer and started watching season 3 when it began airing on the new CW network. Since then, I’ve gotten a few other friends to watch the pilot episode of ‘Mars,’ and like me, they fell in love with the show instantly. Most of the people I know who watch the show got into it because someone else convinced them to watch.

When I started watching the series as it aired on The CW, the first thing that struck me as odd was the commercials that aired during the episodes. At the beginning of the season they had these ridiculous ads featuring the “Aerie Girls.” The girls sat around in pajamas gossiping about the romances on ‘Veronica Mars’ and talking about their own personal experiences with love and relationships. These girls couldn’t have been much older than 15. I remember thinking, “What the hell is this? Why is The CW filling their advertising space with ads targeting tweens? Don’t they know their audience?”

The annoying Aerie girls were phased out after the first few episodes but still, the promotions for ‘Mars’ made the series look like a shallow soapy teen fluff show. They focused heavily on the drama and romance aspect and left out everything else that made ‘Mars’ stand out as series.

Each new episode of the third season was filled with great mysteries, hilarious banter and clever pop culture references, yet none of this seemed to make it into the promotions. As a 29 year old, had I never seen an episode of the series, there is no way that these promos would’ve enticed me to watch the show. Based on the dwindling ratings over the course of the third season, it seemed to me that not only were the promos not appealing to adults, but any of the young people tuning in with the hopes of seeing an ‘OC’ type show were probably left disappointed and unwilling to tune in the following week.

Basically, The CW was trying to sell the show to the wrong audience. They were asking young teenagers to tune in when there were plenty of adults out there who would’ve loved the series had they realized what it had to offer. Adults like mysteries. Adults like silly references to The Big Lebowski and ‘Battlestar Galactica’. Adults like intelligent, complex characters with real emotions and compelling story arcs. This is not to say that teenagers don’t like these things but when you have a show that has all of the ingredients to appeal to the key demographic of TV viewers (people ages 18-35), why would you intentionally undersell it?

It seems to me that either The CW is dead set on targeting a younger audience, or in the case of ‘Veronica Mars,’ they simply did not realize the potential they had to draw viewers away from the “big” networks. The network’s decision to drop the beloved ‘Gilmore Girls’ along with ‘Mars’ this year makes me wonder about the direction the network is headed in.

Cries for ‘Mars’ to be saved for another season could be heard all over the internet this spring but apparently they fell on deaf ears. The CW, as a “new” network, should recognize the value of loyal viewers. ‘Veronica Mars’ was the only show I watched regularly on The CW and now that it’s gone, I have no reason to tune in. I’ll buy the third season on DVD and keep an eye out for new projects that Rob Thomas has a hand in because when it comes to putting out a solid TV show, that guy really knows what he’s doing. But as of 10 pm on Tuesday, the CW will have nothing left to offer me for the time being.

The above said, I wouldn’t go as far as to say I’m boycotting the network. It would be foolish of me to make such a claim and my love for Kevin Smith’s work is enough to get me to watch the first episode of ‘Reaper’ when it premieres this fall. It just irritates me when a network shows no regard for the people who do tune in to watch their shows regularly. Not every TV series is going to be a ratings winner but when it’s a quality show, it falls on the network to find a way to get viewers to tune in. Their inability to properly market ‘Mars’ leaves me with serious doubts about the network.

So with that I say with bitter sarcasm: Thanks a lot, CW. If you’d rather fill your timeslots with shows like ‘Pussy Cat Dolls’ (The search for the next singing dominatrix), I’m going to take a pass. There are better shows to watch and frankly, I’m not sure I’d want to invest any more time on the quality shows you might air in the future only to see them cancelled after a couple of seasons.

Is The CW To Blame For Veronica Mars' poor ratings?

Do you agree that The CW should've promoted the show better or do you think the show was doomed regardless of how it was promoted?

This is spot on, Kelly. In fact, I sent an email to the CW saying pretty much the same thing. They had one of the most amazingly original, smart and witty shows that was written by some of the best scribes in the business and starring the most talented up-and-coming new stars on tv and they all but neglected it.

  1. Phrelin Says:

My wife and I are over 60 and for some reason started watching Veronica Mars from the beginning. We look at all the offerings on TV and try to find quality writing, acting and production values. If it wasn't for cable channels....

The problem is the economic model that influences everything in our society. It took Mash two years to get a sizeable audience. You can't do quality work depending upon this week's profits. What have the networks planned for 2012? Probably their own demise because 5 years is so far away when you think like a 15-year-old.

  1. emmarie Says:

I agree completely and was equally perplexed by those stupid commercials. Whoever came up with that campaign should be fired. They obviously couldn't have been a fan or possibly they were forced to take such a direction from someone above who never watched the show. My other issue with the CW was the way that they forced Thomas to jump through hoops to change VM over and over again into something it wasn't. The reason I watched VM was because it wasn't CSI or L&O. I liked the fact that you had to tune in each week. Most VM viewers probably are not regular viewers of those CSI and L&O type shows. And as for Kevin Smith, it's a shame he couldn't get the USA Network or the FX channel to pick up his show. I'll be very surprised if a KS show will make it past a few eps before the CW cancels it.

  1. Lori Says:

My thoughts exactly. I am 32 years old, and I was devoted to this show. I pushed the show on everyone I came in contact with, assuring them it was the best TV in the history of television. And I meant it. Too bad the CW was so busy trying to market (and I am certain pushed the writers to cater to) teens when that was never who the show appealed to (with notable exceptions, of course). It didn't appeal to an age group or a demographic. It appealed to people who know good writing when they see it, to people who want real characters they care about for complex reasons, to people who enjoyed snark at it's finest.

I believe they believed they were giving it their best shot, I won't fault them that. I just don't think they had enough faith in the intelligence of your average viewer to give the show a chance. And, if to 'make it work' you change the premise of the show, the focus of the show, and make the characters inconsistent to serve your demographic surveys, then that's not really a chance. It's just alienating faithful viewers and failing to catch new ones.

I agree with one reporter who said, to paraphrase, the CW has made it clear, quality television is not a goal. I don't have time for poor writing, I watch(ed) three hours of TV a week. Now, I guess it's down to two.

  1. SoCal Dude Says:

I've been watching VM from the beginning and I definately think the CW dropped the ball in how it promoted the show. In all fairness though, I can see how hard it would be to sell the show. If someone trying to get me to watch told me the premise I'd probably pass.

Also, the beautiful cohesion that made the first season so excellent was sorely missing this time around. I realize the situation with not knowing if they were getting a third season and being on a new network with creative changes being asked for wasn't exactely conducive to making a great show, but this season has been all over the place with regards to tone and storytelling focus.

I hope everyone involved with the show goes on to bigger and better. (Although I'd still like more VM!)

  1. Sage Says:

I am fifty-seven, hold graduate degrees, have a household income every advertiser wants a piece of, & I loved Veronica Mars for its wit, casting, acting, pacing, & general subversive quality. In the unbearable wasteland that is "reality" TV -- esp. these loathesome, bogus competition shows with the snide judges & the narcissistic competitors -- Veronica was such a delightful anomaly. Smart! Funny! A girl character who sucked it up & soldiered on! I wish some other network would pick this show up & let Rob Thomas do what he wants. Reminds me of the whole Firefly episode -- another colossal mistake.

  1. JC Says:

I am a 30 year old female attorney. I am always glad to find a strong, intelligent female character on television. Growing up, the few strong female characters I saw on television helped encourage me to go out and become a professional. I am disgusted that the CW is more interested in shows that degrade women like the Pussy Cats crap. The farmer show sounds like a new low for the network. I will not be watching that network again. Dawn Ostroff should be ashamed!

  1. ms j Says:

You all mention points that keep running through my head trying to cope with the loss of Veronica. Another couple well beyond the 'tween' ages, my husband and I got hooked on VM this season. We caught up on previous seasons through NetFlicks and even got our friends hooked. We regularly stay away from the TV due to the lack of quality shows, yet as soon as we seem to find one, it's gone. As far as ratings, what else could CW possibly put that time slot that will draw more viewers? I challenge them (and all networks) to give us a show as witty and intriguing as Veronica Mars. Until then, we'll be spending our Tuesday nights with a book.

  1. Gina Says:

Shouldn't the amount of news being committed to the demise of VM *say* something to the CW?! What a laughing stock they are in the process of becoming... They undoubtedly failed Veronica Mars. Undoubtedly.

  1. jmoney Says:

Couldn't agree more. I'm a 30 year old male who has two male roommates in their late 20's. We always rolled our eyes when those Aerie commericals came on. In addition, whenever I would mention the show to anyone, they had no idea what show I was talking about.
This is a show that had Stephen King and Joss Whedon in its corner--and killer guest stars like Patricia Hearst, Ed Begley, Jr., Paul Rudd, Laura San Giacomo, and Ken Marino to name a few, but would casual fans of these people have any idea? I'd say no. Instead, the CW is focused on building is base (the tweens) to grow with the network. Its a sad strategy that, unfortunately, works.
Well, I know at least 8 people who are boycotting the CW. My two roommates and myself are 3 of them.

  1. Cala Says:

The demise of VM just breaks my heart. As another reply mentions, this is reminiscent of the too-early ouster of Firefly (which I didn't get hooked on until after the show began re-airing on Sci-Fi). As with "Dead like me", this seems so premature. The writing is fantastic, the characters are engaging, and this is the kind of quirky, smart story-telling that makes me proclaim my love of television. Not every show can have the draw of "Heros" or "Ugly Betty". And as much as I enjoy those shows as well, there is something about the underdog fave that brings me back even more reliably and saddens me even more when it disappears.

  1. Mikaela, 16 Says:

Wow, right on spot. This totally puts my thoughts on print. The CW have axed the best. show. ever. on televison. It makes me so angry and sad that there's no words. ARGH!

  1. Sterling Says:

I agree with everything you said about Mars. I too heard about it from a friend and feverishly watch all three seasons in 3-4 weeks. But what I can't believe is of all of the great shows you have listed to watch this week, you don't have House. At least House will be on TV next year...

  1. w. fire Says:

Spot on. I also caught up to the third season before it aired and went through the same questions about marketing. Also, driving through South Dallas on East IH 35 the CW had half a dozen billboards up, about one a mile. They promoted Supernatural, Gilmore Girls, and One Tree Hill among others. All these show I have never watched. I kept looking for a VM billboard and never saw one. There was also zero radio ads here in Central Texas but I heard enough ads for OTH to know it wasn't for me.

I have no doubt that the CW will fail in its quest to become a major network. After tonight I also will have no reason to tune back. I told them this in an e-mail and got no response.

  1. emmarie Says:

I just finished watching the finale. So now the CW is gone from my DVR FOREVER!!!! I am removing the channel from my lineup - sorry Kevin Smith - I just can't do it again. What an absolute F*CKING DISGRACE of a network. It's one thing for a network to cancel a new show and leave us hanging, but it's completely something else to leave dedicated, loyal fans with a Show Finale that they mysteriously kept calling a Season Finale in all the commercials and then leave us with a brand new mystery.

Wow what a plan. Bait us with false hope that maybe it'll come back, and by the time the Fall roles around and we see nothing, the CW can leak news to the bloggers that maybe it'll come back as a midseason replacement and by the time that roles around people will already have moved on or started to watch Reaper, which by the way, will probably attract the same VM audience they showed so much respect for. I know you don't want to commit to a boycott, but this is so deserving of one - don't ya think?

  1. VMars Fan Says:

Im lost in so many words. Im a 30 year old guy whos watched most of VM and now its gone. Ill have all 3 seasons of this show soon enough on dvd. I hope the CW is listening. If this was to be it for the show they couldve put up a Tv movie or something. And filled in all the rest of the gaps. Now were all stuck with the last images of Veronica walking away from the voting booth and onto wherever her character is going. I look forward to see how the CW is going to make all this better. I would not be suprised if we all see K.Bell in another tv show. Hopefully it wont be on CW.

  1. AaronMcC Says:

I am wholeheartedly in agreement. This show is/was in my opinion one of the best in tv history. I do not say that lightly. There are only 2 shows I would never miss for anything and they are Lost and Veronica Mars. The CW are so awful at promoting this show that I actually missed an episode this season because I didn't even know it had been aired. This is me, who loves this show and wouldn't miss it for the world, missed an episode.

The layout of the arguement above is perfect and pretty much sums up the thoughts of anyone who has ever watched the show (except those thinking it was about an alien girl who has pillow fights).

Please, someone, anyone, any network, anywhere- pick up this show. If I could pay for it myself, I would, but alas I am a lowly undergrad.

Once the CW decide to cancel Supernatural they will be finished. Everything else on the network is garbage. This is not the bitter rant of a die hard VM fan. It is simply the honest truth of a semi-intellectual young adult. If I want to see hot girls dance suggestively I will go to a club. If I want big explosions I will go to the movie theater. If I want to enjoy the an engaging piece of stimulating entertainment I will watch my VM dvds.

    This is a sad day

  1. Sara Says:

Agreed 100%! Those Aerie Girl spots got on my nerves. Even more annoying, though, were the spots that aired until the very end, featuring Veronica in a horrible short shorts outfit looking like a teen vixen. Even by hubby who thinks KB is quite attractive was put off by those ads because it didn't portray Veronica at all.

I found VM through an article about the best shows on TV that no one is watching. I'm sorry to see it go. I'll always have my DVDs, though, thanks goodness.

  1. lyn Says:

I'm 22. VM is a great show at any age because of the quality. I completely agree with this article. Those Aerie girls were annoying. The CW doesn't know how to market a show, they need to be schooled. VM fans are as loyal as they come, & by having the CW ignore us is pissing me off, the CW i will not watch any of your shows.

  1. stangmom Says:

I agree 100% - simply stated, the CW network is dead to me. I don't see any reason to watch any of their good shows, because in my experience, those are the ones they cancel. I'm sure Reaper will be great because of Kevin Smith, but why invest yourself in a show only to have it ripped away? (such as Veronica Mars, Everwood, and Gilmore Girls) I feel disregarded as a viewer and therefore will disregard the CW as a network.

One last thing....how is it the Dawn Ostroff keeps her job?? She has sabatoged this network. I'm not sure how targeting 16yr olds is a smart move, when you alienate all your 18-35's.....

  1. Ryan Says:

I for one loved Veronica Mars. It was the only CW show i watched, i only came upon it when i was channel surfing one day. That was one of the luckiest days of my life. I am so sad to see it go, but i won't boycott the CW. I just won't be watching because none of its others shows could ever amount to what VM was. I agree that the CW is the worst network by all means, in programming and in the way it is run. The only network that comes close is FOX. But to all of you reading this, if you love quality shows such as Veronica Mars, give a chance to another show that has also hardly been given a chance - FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS. (Friday nights at 10 p.m). It is also one of the only good shows still on television. Give it a chance. You will be surprised.

  1. Sara Jane Says:

You are dead on! I found out about Veronica Mars from an ad in a magazine. I thought i would give it a try and it turned out to be witty and hilarious. It became my favorite show within 10 minutes of the 1st episode. I would probably never have found out about it if i hadn't paid attention to that ad because come on who watches UPN i had never even thought to flip there before. That is why most people didn't know about it, that is why it didn't get as good of ratings as it could. Now, people think that they shouldn't watch it from a 2nd or 3rd season because they will have missed a lot and will be out of the loop. I know a lot of people who haven't been watching since season 1, so they don't watch it on tuesday nights because they weren't caught up with the dvds yet. I think it is ridiculous to cancel Veronica Mars. Also, i know a lot of people, including me, who will be boycotting the cw and a lot of people who don't watch it anyway....so we will see how their ratings go. I'm predicting down the toilet!

  1. Meaghan Bartlett Says:

My sentiments exactly. I'm sorry, but ANYONE who watched Veronica's first two seasons would not want to watch Pussycat Dolls' Search for the Next Doll while Veronica was on hiatus. Nor did the people just starting in this season, because that obviously had some effect on the ratings, no? I've read a few articles that feel Veronica was given a fair shot because even when they had low ratings first/second season, and when they changed networks, they just moved to a new night. I'm screaming bullcrap to this, because they were just moved to a new night to compete with the larger networks' shows. I REALLY want Veronica to be picked up by another network, even if it's smaller than the CW. I couldn't agree more that the show was not marketed fairly, and should NEVER have been placed with Gilmore Girls, a show that had gone COMPLETELY downhill, and actually LOST ratings. I'm so completely saddened, and am still helping the campaign to bring it back as a mid-season replacement, but I'd rather it be moved to a new network.

  1. Sherry Says:

I'm heartbroken! VM is by far the best show on tv. I see no other choice but to boycott the CW and all their new shows. Hopefully a network that enjoys loyal fans will take notice and pick up the show.

  1. Ian Says:

    Well said.

I've spoken with a number of people who've raised an eyebrow when I've said that I'm a "Veronica Mars" fan -- because they had no idea what the show was really like. They thought it was a teen show along the lines of "The O.C."!

  1. DarkSamurai Says:

First of all, it wasn't the CW that cancelled Veronica. It was CBS. The head of CW actually wanted to bring it back, but Les Moonves at CBS put his foot down and the rest is history.

But the numbers don't lie. Veronica Mars was one of the CW's best shows, but it's ratings were abysmal. Just horribly bad--a show on one of the big 3 networks would have been cancelled long ago if it drew the kind of ratings VM was getting. And true, a part of it is marketing, but Veronica was already an established show, so there should have been an established audience with it. There wasn't. And when they put a reality show in THE SAME TIME SLOT, guess what? Those ratings for Pussycat Dolls were through the roof. You can't argue against those numbers. If nobody watches the show, advertisers won't be there. If there are no advertisers, the show can't get produced.

People are now against Reaper simply because it is in the same timeslot as VM was. That's just insane, but understandable since everyone is under the huge misconception that the CW is somehow responsible for the demise of Veronica Mars.

  1. Thelma Thudbucket Says:

While searching for the date that the first show of the 2007 fall season would air, I learned that Veronica was sent to Mars via a cancellation. I am soooo bummed! I started watching the show right off the bat and remained a loyal viewer. The writing was sophisticated, the banter witty, and was insightful when it needed to be. Unfortunately, in our world today, the almighty $$ dictates the slaughter of quality. Shame on CBS and CW for not trying to find a place for this wonderful show to survive!

  1. emmarie Says:

DarkSamurai - The reason I'm against Reapers is because the same audience that was loyal to VM would be the same audience that tunes in to watch Reapers. If you're telling me that the numbers and LM killed Veronica then there's not much hope for Keven Smith on the same channel now is there? And if its doomed before it even airs, why should I give it my time? If what gets the CW the numbers is Pussycat Dolls, which I've never watched, then again, there's not much hope for Kevin Smith. He should have taken his show to HBO, Showtime, or USA or the FX Channel. I am not going to beg the CW to keep a show again. Jericho was saved, but with a promise to the AUDIENCE that if they didn't pull their weight and bring in more viewers that they'd be forced to pull its plug as well. So now as an audience we're expected to do the job of their marketing department. How much advertising and publicity have you seen for Jericho compared to Lost or Heroes? There is a direct connection to the failure of shows. They got free publicity all over the net from critics telling viewers everywhere that VM is the best show on tv, then instead of advertising it to the masses, they decide to change the show, forced Rob to turn it into something it wasn't meant to be and then set up the Aerie commercials with stupid teen girls giggling about the Logan/Veronica romance. Honestly, once again, What chance does Kevin Smith and Reapers have on this station?

  1. Latisha Says:

I agree with the article whole heartedly. I used to revolve my Tuesday and or Wednesday around the Gilmore Girls and Veronica Mars spots. I faithfully watched all reruns. Now that both shows are canceled I officially have nothing worthwhile to watch. I now never turn to the CW at all. The cancellation after having to suffer through the trauma of all the changes to the show, has convinced me that this network has officially lost their minds. If anyone has a petition to take them off the air, Please let me be the first to sign it!

  1. LadyHawke Says:

Yes, the almighty $$ is the key reason why mindless, shallow, degrading, intellectual dumbing and valueless shows are running today. I quit watching TV three years ago, for financial reasons, and VM and Gilmore Girls were my all time favorites, but I am glad I did. I have all the DVD sets for these two shows now and my other favorites like Stargate, Firefly, & Roswell, to name a few. I just felt that paying all that money to have cable TV was a waist because there were too many of those yuky shows. So now I buy DVDs of my favorite shows and movies. I do look for TV series that I think would be good. I rent them first and if I like them I buy the DVDs if they are out, if I do not like them, then no big loss. I am still waiting for some other shows that were axed prematurely like, Dead Zone, Others, 4400, and several others to come to DVDs (at a reasonable price). It seems that when a good, intelligent, witty show comes out like VM & Gilmore Girls it gets low ratings. Doesn't that tell you something about the people of today. The mass want the shallow, mindless, idiotic shows. They do not want to be good, kindhearted, cleaver, intelligent. It also shows us that the networks want to keep the mass as mind numbing, stupid idiots and basically without any intelligence. TV is no more for the intelligent. Soon the tweens will be our leaders. I hope I am dead by then.
