The Clicker's Favorite TV Characters Of 2007

By Kelly West: 2007-12-30 20:49:19

The Clicker's Favorite TV Characters Of 2007 2007 was a pretty good year for TV characters. From veteran shows like Battlestar Galactica, 30 Rock and Heroes to new series like Greek, Chuck and Pushing Daisies there have been some great characters worth remembering this year. Since it’s the last Sunday of the year, I thought I’d dedicate this week’s column to my favorite TV characters of 2007.

Here they are in no particular order:

John Casey - Chuck
Casey’s serious nature offers such a great contrast to Chuck’s dorky, insecure personality. It’s this kind of deadpan humor that we see on occasion whenever Casey gets some screen-time that makes me love Chuck as a series. He’s exactly how you would expect a government agent to be if he were assigned the responsibility of babysitting a guy like Chuck. It also doesn’t hurt that I absolutely love Adam Baldwin.

Saul Tigh - Battlestar Galactica
Tigh was awesome in season 3. Ok, fine. Tigh is always awesome but his reaction to finding out that he’s one of the final five Cylons was fantastic. When he, Tory, Anders and Tyrol come to realize what they are, they’re all nearly paralyzed with fear and shock. But when the alarm sounds, it is Tigh who pulls it together enough to snap everyone back to reality. He gives a brief but extremely powerful speech to the rest of them about knowing who he really is, Cylon or not and it’s enough to get everyone out the door and off to their stations. Tigh rocks and seeing how he and the other four deal with their newfound knowledge is one of the things I’m most looking forward to in 2008.

Betty Suarez - Ugly Betty
When Betty was introduced to us last year, she appeared to be nearly perfect in the personality department. Bubbly, kind and optimistic, you couldn’t not love her. But it was the fact that she made some mistakes this year that caused me to really take notice of her as a great character. Whether it was abandoning Charlie on the subway because she secretly wanted her to get lost or keeping the fact that Wilhelmina was cheating on Bradford from Daniel, this year Betty proved that she’s not perfect. But she’s learning from the mistakes and that’s all part of becoming a grown-up. Her flaws make her more real. A perfect Betty would eventually become a boring Betty and who wants that?

Elle Bishop - Heroes
Being the new kid on the block on the already successful NBC series, Elle has already become one of my favorite heroes. Sure, this is probably at least partially due to the fact that I love Kristen Bell and miss Veronica Mars but also like the fact that she’s sort of treading the line between good and evil. When she’s first introduced, her sassy ways and itchy-trigger finger when it comes to her powers made her seem like a good fit for Team Evil on the series but as the second season went on, she seemed to start realizing that she’s never been much more than a puppet for her father. Elle is one of the heroes I’m most interested in seeing when the series returns next fall.

Cappy - Greek
Cappy is college. Anyone who went away to school probably knew a guy like him. Whether it’s his willingness to befriend dorks like Rusty, the fact that he’s always ready to party, or just his general laid-back-ness – he’s just such an easy character to love. While everyone else is worried about classes, their social status or their future, Cappy lives in the moment and seems to realize that his days of enjoying that limbo-period between adolescence and adulthood wont last forever. I love that about him. It also doesn’t hurt that he’s fairly dreamy.

Olive Snook - Pushing Daisies
There isn’t one character on this new series that I don’t love but Olive made the list because she’s just so much fun to watch. She seems to have a flair for the dramatics and her nosy, meddling nature makes her a little ray of sunshine, especially in contrast to Ned and Emerson, who rarely express much elation. Pushing Daisies is a charming show and Olive’s presence seems to add an extra dose of magic (and blonde) to the show.

Jared- Kid Nation
Jared was perhaps one of the oddest kids on CBS’s new reality series, Kid Nation. That’s probably why he’s the only “reality” character to land a spot on my favorites list this year. Whether he was quoting Shakespeare or reflecting on the town of Bonanza with some very wise-beyond-his-years insights, this 11-year-old turned out to be one of the most entertaining aspects of the season.

Pam - The Office
Pam really stepped it up this year on The Office. After spending all of the third season watching Jim date Karen, she finally plucked up the courage to tell him how she felt. And then when she and Jim got together (finally!), she let her hair down (literally). I love seeing fairly predictable characters develop and improve as the series goes on. The thing I really loved about Pam’s recent transformation is that while it was a huge improvement from her otherwise passive nature, none of her new behavior felt out of character. Jenna Fischer deserves some major kudos for that.

What to Watch (12/30 to 1/5)

Amazing Race 12 (CBS) 8:00ish pm
Honestly, They Have Witch Powers or Something - (New!) One of the teams tries to trick another team into buying tickets for a later flight.

Saturday Night Live in the ‘90s: Pop Culture Nation (NBC) 8:00 pm
It’s New Years Eve, all of the normal shows are in reruns. So whether you’re ringing in the new year with a group of your closest friends or flying solo, this SNL special (which isn’t new but who cares?) looks like the perfect thing to have on in the background while you’re preparing to countdown to 2008.

Dick Clark’s Primetime New Year’s Rockin’ Eve (ABC) 10:00 pm
Synchronize your clocks and watch performers like Miley Cyrus, OneRepublic and the Jonas Brothers rock out in anticipation of the start of a new year.

Biggest Loser (FX) 8:00 pm
(Season Premiere!) – The fifth season of BL kicks off with the contestants competing in pairs in an effort to lose weight.

According to Jim (ABC) 9:00 pm
Jim Almighty - (Season Premiere!) Jim meets God (played by Lee Majors) who tries to get Jim to improve the behavior of men.

Crowned: The Mother of All Pageants (The CW) 9:00 pm
Tension, Tears, Teamwork (New!) – This show kind of depresses me, yet I can’t seem to stop watching. In this episode, the teams perform in a talent competition.

Celebrity Apprentice (NBC) 9:00 pm
Task: Selling Hot Dogs (Season Premiere!) – The quasi-celebs meet the Donald and embark upon their first mission – to sell hot dogs. Sounds riveting (and yes, I plan to watch because there’s nothing else on besides reruns)

Friday Night Lights (NBC) 9:00 p.m.
There Goes the Neighborhood (New!) The Panthers play a team from a town that was hit by a tornado. Lyla’s mom plans to remarry.

We Are Marshall (HBO) 8:00 p.m.
Based on a true story, this film stars Matthew McConaughey and centers on a football team that attempts to rebuild itself after most of the team is killed in a plane crash.
