The Office Recap: Shareholders Meeting

The Office Recap: Shareholders Meeting Is Michael an moron? Kind of. He regularly puts his foot in his mouth and gets too caught up in the moment to see the mess he’s creating. Tonight’s episode was a prime example of that as he stood before the shareholders and spoke on behalf of Dunder Mifflin that they were going to fix the company.

Because he’s such a successful branch manager, Michael was invited by corporate to join them on stage at the shareholders meeting in New York. They went all out for him, sending a limo to chauffer him up to the city and inviting him to enjoy some fancy snacks at the hotel lounge. Michael brought Dwight, Andy and Oscar with him so he’d have witnesses to his moment of glory.

We learned last week that Dunder Mifflin is on the verge of bankruptcy, so while the rest of the corporate bigwigs were sweating it out before the meeting, Michael had no idea what he was in for. Sure enough, after being escorted by security to the stage, he and the rest of the people with him were promptly booed by the crowd of disappointed shareholders. Now, you would think Wallace would’ve prepped Michael a bit better for the situation. Even just telling him not to mention the bankruptcy issue while his microphone was on would’ve been a good idea. But when Michael let the b-word slip, the crowd got even more distressed. After deciding to take a fifteen minute break and the corporate people left the stage, Michael couldn’t leave the crowd angry. So he opened his mouth again, this time promising that they were going to come up with a 45-day plan to get the company back into the green again. This cheered everyone up and Michael left, feeling pleased that he’d managed to get the applause he’d been salivating for since learning he was going to be a part of the conference.

Wallace and some of the other corporate guys weren’t pleased with the promises Michael made, especially considering they had no idea how they were going to live up to them. But isn’t this the problem? Shouldn’t they have some kind of plan to fix the situation? It’s like the ship is sinking and the CEO and the rest of corporate are busy trying to consume as much caviar and champagne as they can before dodging for their lifeboats and leaving the shareholders to drown.

The CEO called Michael a moron but Michael was kind of right when he called the guy an moron back. Oscar had a point when he said the company shouldn’t be blowing money on limos and other perks when there’s a major financial crisis. Are perks like that helping the company? Do they really need limos and fancy lounge lunches? If only Oscar would’ve been brave enough to speak up but then again, in this economy, I kind of understand his apprehension to speak his mind to the CEO, Wallace and everyone else there.

Humorous moments in this portion of the episode was Michael calling the former congressman “Your eminence,” calling the security guard “Officer,” and the guard quietly admitting he once did security for Nelly Furtado.

Back at the office, Jim found out that no one really takes his position seriously. Or at the very least that he’s not a “real boss.” It comes out that Ryan’s the one that’s been bad-mouthing Jim, clearly jealous of Halpert’s recent success (and probably still bitter over his own fall from grace.) So Jim flexed his authoritative muscles by giving Ryan a new office, which was more of a closet. And Ryan quickly attempted to back down, not wanting to be shut away in the little room with no internet. Nice one, Jim!

We also learned that Phyllis sometimes goes out to lunch with Bob Vance and gets drunk. How very Meredith of her!
